A cough from Patrick brought Chike back to his senses because it was as of he didn’t want to let go me,

“I’m sorry, i was so scared and worried thinking you’ll go do something stupid, he said letting go of me.

“I’m sorry I made you that worried, I said.

“Please don’t do that again, I mean don’t leave that way without telling your family at least. God forbid what if something bad happened to you how will we explain that? He asked and I heaved and sat down.

“It won’t happen again, I’m back right? I asked him and he sat down also.

“How are you? Still hurt? He asked and I smiled.

“I’m fine, perfectly fine I must say trust me, I replied.

“No revenge spirit? he asked.

“Certainly not, I’m okay now and I’ve left him for God since he sees himself a god let them settle it among themselves and let’s see who’s more mightier, I replied and he looked at me and scoffed.

“Seriously? Is it you saying this or your twin? He asked and Duke walked in.

“I asked the same question yesterday, its still looking strange to me, welcome, Duke said and shook hands with Chike.

“Thank you bro. But If she truly and purely have a change of mind then that’s good news, I’m happy to hear that, he said smiling at me and I nodded and laughed out loud with the way he was just staring at me saying nothing.

“I don’t understand you guys again, why Una dey look me like that? I asked and Chike shook his head.

“We are just happy to see you na what else? Duke asked back.

“Anyway I’ll be going now, but can I see you later? Chike asked.

“Mhennn I don’t know o my clients don quarrel with me tire and I need to resume back fully and make it up to them, I replied.

“When am less busy I’ll surely call you and wherever you are I’ll meet you there and we’ll do the business together, Chike said and I laughed.

“I am very serious, my eyes will be on you from now on so you won’t vanish again. I’ll see you later, Chike said getting up.

“No problem then, till then, I said and he shook hands with Duke and waved at Patrick who walked in again.

“Uncle are you going? I thought you’ll take us out, Patrick said.

“Patrick! I shouted opening my eyes on him..

“Don’t worry that will be in the evening, anywhere you want to go, Chike said and Patrick totally ignored the eye contact I gave to him.

“Okay uncle we’ll be ready for you then, see you in the evening and let’s use it as a mini celebration for her return. If she runs away and come back, we’ll hold another celebration again, shey you like it?, Patrick asked me and Chike smiled.

“Forget the silly boy, Duke told Chike and I escorted him outside.

I got in and met Patrick humming looking at me,

“Patrick when are you going back to school? You’ve overstayed your welcome, I told him.

“Well I see you leaving soon anyway so? Besides uncle is coming in the evening and we need to go out, Patrick replied and ran in and I shook my head looking at Duke who was stylishly looking at me and fingering his phone.

“Hey say what you want to say before your mouth will smell, I told him.

“Thank you, I see someone is equally scared yet you came giving me motivational quotes, Duke said keeping his phone.

“Me? Scared of what exactly? I asked.

“Oh sis stop it because I can see it, in fact I can even smell it. You’re scared of loving again that’s why you stayed away from relationship after your divorce with Desmond. Common sis you can’t remain this way you know, Duke replied and I forced a smile,

“I’ll go meet Sandra in the kitchen okay, I said and left……….

3 months later Patience gave birth to a baby girl, just as she wanted. I was more happy than she was and right there I remembered my late daughter.

“Was she this beautiful? I asked without knowing as I held her baby and a touch on my shoulder made me realize I said that out and I smiled.

“Still thinking about it? Duke asked.

“I don’t know, how do mothers who has lost their children or a child survive? How do they move on? I asked.

“Sis don’t think about it now, you’ll get another for sure in fact triplets, Duke replied and I burst out laughing.

“You’re in the spirit brother, Patience concurred.

My phone began to ring and it was Chike calling. We’ve been very close after I came back and he called to know if I was still in the hospital so he can come around to see Patience.

“Your sugar calling? Patience asked and I rolled my eyes.

“Stop it, I replied.

“Stop what sister? Please loosen up I beg you, you’re not getting any younger o, Duke said.

“That’s it, who will want to marry me now? All that comes my way is nothing but flirts, I said.

“Including Chike? Nah I don’t believe that, maybe you’re the problem because you’re using Desmond as a yardstick and you think any romantic and loving guy will be cunning like him. Chike is matured, he has been very helpful in your business and very truthful, why are you locking him up? Duke asked and I smiled.

“Pot calling kettle black, I said.

“Now you’re wrong. I’ll be seeing Sandra parents next week, thanks for remembering me sef, Duke said and we excitedly screamed out hugging him………….

After Chike dropped me off from the hospital, I sat down thinking about what my siblings discussed. They are right, I locked my heart up and threw it into the ocean. The same heart that made me blind, stupid and careless, I didn’t want to risk it anymore. But then what about Chike? He knows his boundaries and has never crossed it for once, he’s a best friend and an adviser and I’ve learned so much from him especially when it comes to business. He is always there to listen to me and very understanding. Maybe its time for me to loosen up because I am not getting younger anymore, but then this love sometimes can do wonders, am I ready for it? I kept thinking…………

A month later Sonia who got married also gave to birth a baby girl, and Duke was making arrangements for his wedding. I tried loosing up a bit to Chike seeing my younger ones are now mothers and here am I as the senior single to stupor, but Chike was not behaving as if he wants to be romantically involved with me. Hmmm confusion!!

I went to the hospital to visit Sonia after 2 days of her delivery because she passed through the Cesarean section and she needed help. It was stressful joining business runs with the hospital, and one night Chike offered to drive me home because Sonia sister in law decided to stay with her for the night. I was already dozing off in the car and eventually slept off but Chike woke me up when we got home.

“Thank you, I told him.

“Its nothing, he replied.

“Okay will you come in or?? I asked.

“Okay if you want, he replied and we got in together. No one was at home and I yawned tiredly and wanted giving him water to drink but he stopped me,

“You don’t have to Joan, something bothering you I know, he said and I shook my head.

“Nothing, I said.

“You sure? He asked and i nodded.

“Okay I know its sudden but can you make it to my mom birthday tomorrow? He asked.

“Ahh tomorrow? But why are you telling me this now na? I asked.

“I’m sorry but I felt you won’t agree to it, he replied.

“But why? Its your mom right? I asked.

“Yes, ermm you see ermm she may ask you some questions you may not like or understand, he replied.

“You’re getting me confused here, is there a problem? I asked and he looked at me and heaved.

“She’ll be thinking I will want to introduce my wife to be then she will start asking you some funny questions and if she finds out the truth she’ll be disappointed, he replied and I saw that funny and began to laugh but Chike kept a serious face.

“You don’t understand what am saying right? He asked.

“Wait a minute, you want me to pretend to be your wife to be or wah? I asked.

“I’m not a kid Joan, that is a game for upcoming young men. I want it real, not because my mom wants it but because I think its time for me now, he replied and I got choked.

“Sorry sorry, but what are you trying to say? I asked him.

“Haven’t I given you enough chance to free yourself from your past and hurt? I didn’t want to bother you knowing what you’ve been through and I understand. You know I was once in your shoe, almost your kind of shoe though I have a bigger size, he replied and laughed a bit.

“I met this girl years ago, I was a struggling guy then. She said she wants to go to school and I saw that as a good idea, I gave her every support financially from my very sweat thinking when she graduates I’ll come do the proper thing and have her to myself. But lo and behold she said I was not good for her and that she deserves more better. She joined politics in school and must have met guys…. Big influential guys that matters as a beautiful lady she was. Honestly speaking she was intelligent, very out spoken and what was I then? I could only manage to speak my cut and join English with my jean and polo hustling. And when she broke me that way, I saw the need to better my life and I had to sponsor myself and to also attend the school that made her insult me. I saw ladies as heartless beings and gold diggers, I didn’t want to associate myself again and that made me unmarried because the more I want to go close to a lady I saw they were attracted to material things alone. If I lost all I have today will they still love me? Will they still support me? Will they leave and see me less a man? Chike asked and I was so weak.

I was so speechless as I just stared at him and he smiled,

“Then when you told me about Desmond, he’s such a fool for letting go and playing someone so special. Someone who accepted his flaws and wanted to see him better yet he lost it and hurt her that much. Joan I won’t tell you I am better or perfect, but I want us to go this isle together knowing that we have suffered that pain, rejection and hurt from our previous relationship. We wont be newbies but we will love each other the way it suppose to be, just us and till death do us part, Chike said and I didn’t know when I kissed him with tears streaming down my face.

“I love you Joan, and I want you to trust me completely, he whispered as I cried on him…………

Happiness was returned back to me with Chike now in my life and we attended his mother birthday together and I was so welcomed. He introduced me to his family who attended the birthday and I used the opportunity telling them about my business. His mom didn’t leave me one bit, it was her prayer that Chike will bring a woman home and he finally did.

Chike dropped me back home after the party that night and that was when I told Duke about us. Duke marched round the sitting room humming for more than 10x before congratulating us, I don’t know if that’s his own way of showing his happiness because he personally chose Chike.

2 days later after that I was driving when suddenly I was cornered and I stopped. Some guys on mask came out and dragged me out of my car into a bus and drove off leaving my car in the middle of the road …………
