I’m Vengeance - S01 E15

That night I had a dream that didn’t go too good. It was a warning from my father telling me go back home, there I tried arguing with him and gave him reasons why I should carry on with the revenge because I swore I will make him pay. But he told me to look around me and asked what am seeing. Will this give you fulfilment? What if it lands you into more trouble and regret? Joan go home! My father shouted and I woke up.

The place was so hot and I was dripping with my own sweat but I was so scared. I cleaned my face and paced around for a while as Desmond voice kept repeating in my ears as he bragged all he did to me with no remorse,

“But he has to pay na, I can’t be the loser here, they have to ask for my forgiveness, I said and sat on the low bed covering my face on my palms.

In the morning I woke up not to see the guys I know and I was not comfortable with the way the other guys looked at me as the only female among them. I had to go inside and locked the door very well scared they may break it down, then I called their number but they were not picking up.

Right there I accepted my dad voice and was determined to leave but a knock came on the door and I asked who it was which the guys replied. I opened up and they quickly asked why I locked the door when everyone is around,

“Do you expect me to be comfortable around people I don’t know? What if they harm me with the way they looked at me? I asked and they laughed.

“We gat rules here and they can’t touch you, don’t let that bother you, one replied.

“Where did you all go to? I asked.

“We checked out the address the mechanic guy gave you, this is the man, another replied showing me his phone and I sat down on the bed looking at it carefully.

“Looks familiar? One asked and I nodded.

“It should be, he was one of Desmond uncles during your wedding, he replied and I looked at him and looked at the picture again.

“Is this him? He has such a big house yet he disguised himself to be poor? I asked them.

“That’s it, na big man o, one replied and I returned the phone to them.

“I give up, I don’t want to carry on with it again, I told them and they looked at me which I closed my eyes tight praying they shouldn’t get annoyed.

“You don dey fear or wetin? One asked and I shook my head.

“This is becoming more risky than I thought, I never knew Desmond was that deep and if I am to continue in this then I won’t be different from Desmond, I’ll just be like him and I don’t want that. Besides so many people will come after me and my innocent family, I’ll just let it go but one thing is sure, every pains and tears they caused me will surely hunt them, I replied.

“Tah! Even Una bible talk say faith without work is dead! You think say na by prayers Desmond go repent without you making a step or without you shaking your body to pay him back? One shouted.

“This won’t pay! I don’t even have the money to fund all of this, look at the people we are standing up against where’s the victory? What if the guys here get paid by them and they suddenly stand on their side where will that leave us? I don’t want this anymore please, I want to go home, I said and the guys licked their lips so disappointed in me but I told them to give me their account number to send them an appreciation for their trouble.

“I no want, carry your bag dey go, they said and left the room and a tear fell from my eyes. I cleaned it off and heaved and began arranging my bag without wasting time and few minutes later the guys saw me coming out with my bags,

“Wetin dey happen? One of the guys asked.

“Nothing, she receive emergency call for house and e dey disturb am but she go come back, the guy with me replied.

“Guy! Guy! She is not to leave this place without us finishing the work at hand you suppose know, another said.

“I said she’s coming back, no be she get the thing? No reason am like that, one of the guy said looking at me and I cleared my throat.

“I want to go arrange more cash because I saw the people I am up against, I’ll be back, I said to the guys and they only looked at me saying nothing and I slowly walked up to my car while the guys I hired stood looking at me.

“Please don’t be angry with me, I never knew it will turn out to be this way trust me, I slowly said to them.

“Do you know what the guys would have done to you if they found out you’ve backed out? I had to lie to safe you else they would have killed you to protect their domain from linking out, don’t come back here, the guy said and they went in immediately which I kicked start the engine and drove out without looking back.

I arrived home and indeed my siblings were seriously looking for me,

“I’m sorry I put you in so much trouble, I told them.

“Really sister? Duke asked and I knew he must be so angry with me. He hates it when someone gives him a sense of abandonment just like what his mother did running away with another man.

“I’m sorry Duke trust me, maybe I just needed a time alone but its not what you think, I replied.

“Is it because you met with Desmond? Patience asked me and I knew they must have gone through my phone to see the recording which was the exact reason I left my phone behind for them.

“Yes I left thinking I will pay him back, but Desmond is more. There is nothing that we as humans can do to Desmond except God interferes that’s why I am bringing down the charges and everything, I want to be in peace, I replied.

“Really sister? That’s good news, Sandra said hugging me and Duke scoffed.

“Like you’ll let him go Scot free? I can’t believe you, Duke said and I smiled and told him everything I found out about Desmond and Duke could not still believe it.

“Its not like I wouldn’t have go ahead with it, but dad asked me to go back home. I met guys who were ready and eager to help me out but I suddenly saw there’s no peace of mind in it and here am I. You should be grateful Duke when you fought with Desmond in the hospital he didn’t go behind to harm you, he’s very deadly in the inside but a dove on the outside, I told him.

“Serious? Ahhh Then its better we just stay away from him before he turns to face us, and don’t forget Precious warned you to watch your back that means they are capable to do and to undo anytime o please let peace reign I beg you, Patience fearfully said.

“What about you sister are you okay? Duke asked and I smiled nodding..

“Then that’s more important, not because Desmond is deadly but your happiness and peace of mind matters more to me. If dad says all of this should end then I have no choice right? But Barr Chike wants to talk to you, he has been worried about you, Duke said with a wink and I smirked.

“Why the wink? abeg leave me I’m tired, I said getting up.

“We know na, but we are just telling you that he was over worried than us sef and it was so romantic, Sandra said and I burst out laughing.

“Thank God I don’t understand what you’re saying sef, but I’ll call him in the morning, I said and they awwwnned smiling at me.

“Ahhh I said I’ll call him na, abeg let me go take my bath, I said going to my room while they happily welcomed me again..

To be very honest the anger and hatred I had in me was gone and I wondered how it happened when I felt the only thing that will bring me peace of mind was vengeance and nothing more than that.

The next morning before leaving my bed I called up Barr Chike, he declined the call and I thought maybe he was busy but he called back immediately,

“Joan is that you? He asked when I picked up.

“Good morning Barr, I replied.

“Where are you Joan? He asked ignoring my greetings.

“At home, I replied.

“I’m coming, he said and dropped the call and I rolled my eyes.

I cleaned up and left my room to see what was arranged for breakfast but the door bell rang and my junior brother who lives in school ran in and hugged me.

“oh look at him, what kind of height is this are you antenna? I asked and he laughed.

“Why did you go like that na? What did you bring for me? He asked and I hissed.

“I know that’s the only thing you’re interested in, I brought back myself will you eat? I asked and he frowned.

“And I ran like that back home thinking you brought something for me, its not fair o, he replied.

“So am I not expensive enough for you? You’re missing o, I said drawing his ears and Sandra came out from the kitchen.

“So aunty you’re now staying here? What is brother Duke doing? Sister why is he wasting time to do the right thing? My big mouth brother asked I had to draw his mouth and landed him a hit on his head and he shouted and ran inside. Even though he jokily said that, Sandra didn’t see it that way and i saw it in her eyes and went to her,

“Don’t think about what Patrick said, he’s just a kid, I told her.

“But he’s right, why is Duke still lingering? Am I not good enough for him? Sandra asked and I held her.

“Ssshh dont say that, he loves you and you know that right? I asked her.

“But has he done anything to prove it? Its 2 years already and he’s not even talking about marriage and it makes me wonder if he doesn’t see me as a wife material, she replied and I touched her cheeks.

“Don’t frown this beautiful face of yours worrying about nothing, I’ll go talk to him and find out why okay, but for now be calm alright, I said and she nodded and I smiled and left her to Duke room.

Guy was still sleeping and I pressed him hard with a pillow,

“Jesus Christ sister are you now a terrorist? He asked and I hissed opening the window.

“We need to talk, I told him and he yawned looking at me.

“Hope your mouth is not smelling sha, I said and he rolled His eyes.

“Okay I’ll be quick because you’re still sleeping but its about Sandra, I said and he sat up.

“What about her? He asked and I smiled at the way he was so serious when I mentioned her name.

“I am just wondering why you’ve not met her parents yet or what are you waiting for? Tell me Duke, i replied and he heaved and closed his eyes.

“Tell me, because I know you love her and she loves you too, besides she’s a good girl and everyone here loves her, then what’s wrong? I asked and he opened his eyes.

“I’m just scared of this marriage thing, I don’t want to be in pains like dad or end up like him. Despite the love dad had for my mother, what did she do?, he asked and I shook my head.

“I said it! If daddy were to be alive I’m sure he would have knocked your head so hard for saying that. Is Sandra like your mom? I asked him.

“Are you ladies not like that? He asked and my eyes bulged out.

“Duke am I like that? Is Patience like that or even Sonia? Just imagine if Sandra sees you like Desmond how will you feel? I asked and he cleaned his face.

“Sister not that I don’t get that thought of going to her parents but I am so scared, I do see dad face and will suddenly think I can face the same fate with him, he replied.

“Duke get over it and do the right thing now so you won’t lose her, I said.

“Is she leaving me? He asked.

“I cannot tell but get up and take this your archaic reasoning from your coconut head and start reasoning well else I will snatch her from you and give her to a good person bet me, I said and Duke laughed falling on his bed and I smiled and left his room.

I went over to the kitchen and smiled at Sandra and she shook her head,

“You shouldn’t tell Duke anything so he won’t see me desperate, she said and I smiled nodding my head and Patrick walked in.

“You have a visitor sister, he said.

“Visitor? Who’s that? I asked following him out.

“Someone marriageable, he replied and I saw Chike.

“Wow that was quick welcome, I said to him but he hugged me instead…………..
