I stared from The security men to Desmond, at a loss on what to say. Suddenly, I knew what I was supposed to do. These people were meant to respect me. I suddenly understood I was at a higher hierarchy in the company than any of them, and deep inside they were all afraid of me.

“Are you ordering me on what to do?,” I asked with a level of authority lacing my voice.

The policeman seemed taken aback a bit by my tone.

“Em…sorry madam, but na oga talk say…”

“Whatever Oga ordered you to do has nothing to do with me. As long as I’m here, I don’t expect you to talk to me as you please. You only talk to me when I ask you to, and only give me suggestions when I need them. Are we clear?,” I asked with a frown.

The policeman bent his head now, and nodded slightly.

“Good. Mr Dominic will be staying with me at the boys quarters until I no longer need him. Dominic come with me.”

As I turned and walked away, I caught a glance of Dinma’s face with shock written all over it. The authority I had used on the men was far from the timid girl she had seen me as.

As I walked into the house, I waited for Dominic to come in after me before I banged the door.

“You said I’m not safe here. Why? What’s going to happen to me?,” I asked with the same authority still in my voice.

Dominic seemed unsure on whether to explain.

“Nothing. I didn’t mean what I said. You’re totally safe here, I was just trying to frighten you,” he said while obviously faking a smile.

I studied his face, and realized that forcing him to say his mind was impossible. Whatever he had to say was too big for me to force it out of him, so I resigned myself to believing he would one day open up to me.

“Are you sure there’s nothing?”

“Absolutely. There’s nothing to hide. Aren’t you hungry? There’s food in the refrigerator I could warm for you,” he said and began to move to the kitchen.

I still stood by the door, with my mind now filled with questions.

“Am I safe? What is Dominic hiding?”
