Edmond and Mark talked a lot about the impact of men being extravagantly charged bride price and it’s impact on the their marriages. They went on talking and wishing that parents would treat their daughters as who they really are, daughters and not merchandise.

Truthfully speaking, when a man has been overcharged bride price, due to love for the lady, he will pay it but, most of the times, that makes him to lose respect for the woman’s parents as he feels like he owes them nothing since he fully bought their daughter. And it also becomes difficult for the man to support his in-laws from deep down his heart as he feels like he already gave them what they wanted through the bride price. Parents, no matter how much you spent on your daughters, do not over charge men who come to marry them. Bride price is not an opportunity to get back the man spent on your child, rather it is money paid to show that there is marriage. Yes you may say ‘no, I spent a lot on her so I should get something because this man will benefit a lot from her?’, what about you yourselves, won’t you benefit from the man? Didn’t the man’s parents also labour to raise him? Actually all the money you spent on your daughter was not by force, it was your responsibility. He who has ears has heard.

“So what are your plans now?” Mark asked him.

“Am not too sure but I think I will start hunting for a job”

“Yeah but I feel you can also start doing business with your car for commuting.”

“That will be a bit difficult. I am not really experienced with that business.”

“How will you gain experience if you don’t try it?”

“Yes you have a point but what about those who saw me working at the company, what will they think of me?”

“What they think of you will never ever bring food on your table. Don’t make that mistake of caring about what people will think of you. Just do anything that helps you make money as long as it is morally upright and legal”.

This conversation opened up the mind of Edmond and he thought that he should discuss the issue with his wife.

In the evening of that day, Edmond discussed with his wife over the suggestion which Mark had given him of starting doing ‘lifts’ with his car. The wife was a bit not certain but felt like he could try as they had no option.

They then decided to use the little money he had to maintain the vehicle, send some to buy food at his mother’s place and also theirs. As for the children school fees, they tried to crack their heads as much as they could but nothing came up. They then decided to let the children stay home and go back to school the time they would find something. This was so because the government schools were very crowded and it took a lot of effort and stress to find a place for the child.

TWO DAYS LATER

Edmond’s wife, Agatha sat on the door on that day alone as she went deep into thoughts. She remembered what the chairman had told her about having her empowerment fund. She really needed that money as it would revive her business. She started having a lot of flashbacks of what different people said to her.

“”Then let that faithfulness give you the empowerment fund. Your friends are now celebrating” she remembered the words of the chairman.

“My dear, if my husband can’t provide enough for me, why can’t I use what I was blessed with to make money secretly? Cheating for money is like doing business. You and the man will both enjoy and in the end you are the one benefiting a lot since you also receive money. It’s just a short moment where you lock your genitals after which you go separate ways and have your life easy” she also remembered her friend saying.

“Once you cheat on your husband, your marriage will never be the same.” She remembered again grandmother’s words.

She shook her heard trying to find a way of getting out of those thoughts. Just then an idea came to her mind. She remembered that the empowerment fund did not come from the chairman but the government meaning there were other officials who she could approach to complain. She then decided to call her friend, the fellow marketeer to seek for a piece of advice.

“Yes i am at the market” the friend answered.

“Oh nice” Agatha said. She then went on telling her friend her plans of wanting to meet government officials over the corruptness of the chairman and what she has bee expecting in return from her.

“Hey you have courage and self confidence! How many people have tried to expose him and ended up failing and ruining their lives? If you love yourself, you better stop thinking about that”

“But I need my money”

“He is a dangerous man and even if you succeed in exposing him, you won’t even live to enjoy your money. He will kill you.”

“So what are you trying to say?”

“Just leave him alone or maybe…..”

“Maybe what?”

“Just let him smash you and all things will be fine.”

“I can’t do that”

“You will thank me later when you do what I have told you. Your husband won’t know. Bye. I have a customer” the friend said hanging up the call.

Agatha got even more confused with what her friend said to her. She didn’t know whether to proceed with the government officials way or just give in to the chairman.

After a lot of deliberations within herself, she went inside the house and went to take a bath. She prepared herself and left to meet the chairman in person.

When she got at the office of the chairman, she found him alone in the office. The chairman did not know what she had gone there for, so he got more curious seeing her there.

“Hello ba Chairman”

“Agatha how are you?”

“Am fine”

“Of what do I owe you this visit?”

“I don’t know, maybe you tell me what you want”

“Oh really?” The chairman said standing and going to close the door to the office.

“Are you really sure of what you are saying?” He asked as he touched her shoulders.

“Mmmm.” She hummed in agreement.

“Oh that’s so nice. Am glad you have now changed your mind. Am telling you, you will enjoy your life now” he said as he hugged her tightly from behind.

Agatha felt a bit uncomfortable as she never remembered the last time a man other than her husband held her like that. But she had no option but to let the chairman touch as he pleases since all she wanted was her money.

“You will now see that it’s useless being faithful to a broke man” he said then turning her at which they faced each other and the chairman held her waist.
