SHADOWS OF DEATH

Within minutes, the flashing red and blue lights of the ambulance surrounded the place , “……Weeiiii, worrrrrr, weiiii, wooooorr,…….piiiiiiii.…” signifying the misfortune that had happened, with the loud sound. The screeching tires and keening wail of the siren, madly barrelling through the streets in the hope of saving a life, with the echoes spreading throughout the neighbourhood gave everyone the shivers.

The ambulance came with aggressive speed, the kind of sheer driving audacity that let everyone know the siren doesn’t make a polite request. Every head turned to follow the red and blue streak, curious about what had happened.

They came in the room. Stephen watched as they carried Sarah on the stretcher into the ambulance. Tears trickled down his eyes, his head burning with questions. Why would she do this? Was it because of the DNA Result? “ He said he will never forgive Lucy and her lover, Clark or whatever he claimed to be.

“Lucy, I will kill you if Sarah dies,”He threatened her. Lucy was sobbing. He showed her no pity or remorse because his focus was on his daughter; Sarah.

“Who’s related to the girl? “the paramedic asked, looking at him. “We need someone to come with us to the hospital.”

” I am!” They all said it in Unison.

“Let me go with them. Try and get Martin for me, ” Stephen commanded her.

(A few minutes later. …)

The paramedics quickly parked the truck in front of the hospital and took her out, and hurried her through the double doors. Stephen held onto her hand as he ran to keep up with the rushing doctors, every other detail of that moment blurring out of his mind. “Sir, nobody is allowed to go further, “the receptionist said as the security held her back. Her hand slipped from his grip and at that moment, he felt like his life had slipped away from him. Soon her stretcher disappeared into the emergency room.

This couldn’t be happening. “God, is she going to be okay? ” he kept walking up and down the aisle, his eyes desperately looking for anyone to walk out of the emergency room. His eyes landed on the hospital chapel and he found himself walking closer to it. He stood at the entrance of the chapel, watching people pray for their loved ones, tears dropping from their eyes, as they kneel down.

He walked over to the altar and knelt, unsure of where to start. His voice shivered when he managed to say, “Lord, don’t take her away from me, please.”

He tried to say something else, but no word left his knotted throat.

He walked back to the waiting area with the hopes of hearing something good. Lucy and Martin had also arrived.

“Welcome, Martin, ” he said his eyes betrayed raw fear. Before he responds, the door swung open. All of them looked at the doctor walking out of the room. His heart skipped a hundred beats as he walked towards them . His breathing stiffened, his lungs refusing to accept any air coming into them. He looked at Lucy, ready to tear her up when the unfortunate happens. He gulped as the doctor got nearer to them, something about his sleek black eyes terrified him.

He glanced at them. He wasn’t bothered by their frightened eyes, before taking a long gaze at the white sheet pinned to his note pad. With his heart beat increasing every second, he squeezed his own fingers between his Palm and hope that all his negative thoughts were proven wrong.

Unable to wait for him to give out the information, Stephen asked the doctor, “How is my daughter?”

The doctor looked at him, a gentle smile lurking on his lips. “We have done an abdominal lavage for her.

“By God’s grace, she’s fine now. Be thankful you made it here on time, a few more seconds delay and she may have died.“

Stephen sighed and closed his eyes, streams of relief soothed his nerves like the peaceful waves of the Mediterranean Sea.

“Is she awake?”Martin asked, “Can we go and see her?”

“She’s conscious now but asleep. Don’t worry, you will see her soon, probably in thirty minutes’ time.

“Thank you, Doctor,” Stephen shook the doctor’s hand, his shaken hands showing some degree of stability.

“Don’t thank me, it’s all the Lord,” he pointed to the hospital chapel. Stephen’s eyes were flooded with tears of joy. He went to the temple and prayed to God. It’s a Prayer for Healing and Recovery;

.”…By the light and truth of Jesus

I lift my loved one Sarah to you.

By the hope of the Redeemer……”
