Olamma also called Ola is a child who everyone sees as evil, even though she was full of wisdom and does things in an adultlike manner. She acts so strangely many times and would not do things like every other being. Her parents had taken her to so many medicine men and women to find solution to her strange behaviour, yet she remained whom she is. She is a child known and by many as Ogbanje (Reincarnated one).

She had died and returned to the same family on a number of times, the most baffling thing when she returns was that she remembers every event in her past world and identifies whoever spoke against her and unleashed her anger on them. She kills and no one finds out she was the one who kills, not even the most powerful medicine men.

She often dies once she gets to age seven and each time she dies, her mother would have been pregnant for another child.

“Olamma is dead, I told us the last time she came with same mark given to her by her parents. Same mark, same eyes, same speech, everything is just the same. She seemed like one who reincarnated”. Ego said.

“Could be a coincidence, remember they say every single human being has a replica somewhere, she could be one of such”. Obidiya replied Ego

” Adanna her mother had complained severally, the child in question appears evil. As far as I’m concerned, she is same a the previous child Ogonna had. She is pregnant again and she (Ola) had fallen sick, just like it happened the last time, I was in the full picture of it”. Ego said confidently again.

“Hmmmmmm! That child is evil, what does she want from her poor parents? Nne, this is unusual. When she was about dying the last time, Oshimiri the medicine man advised a mark be given to her with a hot knife and that was done. To everyone’s dismay, she returned with same mark very fresh. The wound was still looking so fresh, her parents had to treat the wound before it was healed”. Obidiya added.

” The whole thing is so strange Obidiya, very strange. I learnt the parents had sent for Oshimiri the medicine man again”. Ego asked.

“So I heard my sister, but what can Oshimiri do other than give her another mark? She had returned with three different marks given to her previously. But let’s see what Oshimiri will do differently this time.”. Obidiya said.

Ola was helpful to people in the village, especially mothers who do not have children of their own. She helped them in fetching water from the stream and firewood from the bush. But each time she goes to the stream or bush, she doesn’t return as quickly as she should, she spends more time swimming or hunting grasscutters.

Ola was fair, beautiful and has a skin that glows. Most people called her mmuo mmiri (One who came from the water), there was no one in the whole of Umunze that was as beautiful as Ola.

DINTA'S HUT

Dinta, meaning a hunter is Olamma’s father, who had done everything within his powers to see that Ola does not return to the family again. She had caused them more harm and pains.

Oshimiri had arrived from his shrine and was performing some incantations.

” Oshimiri the wise one, please what can be done to make Ola calm? Her going and coming gives my wife and I trouble. Is there not a solution?”. He asked.

Oshimiri threw some cowries on the ground and performed more incantations.

“The gods are still silent Dinta, they are yet to speak”. He replied.

” Why are the gods silent?”. A troubled Dinta asked.

“The ways of the gods cannot be questioned Dinta, they will speak at the appropriate time. All we have to do is give her another mark”. He said.

” Another mark?”. Queried Dinta.

“Yes, another mark. It was through marks that children like her were stopped from returning in time past, I do not know why she has remained stubborn. But I’m sure this time, she won’t return again”. Oshimiri said.

Dinta agreed to his suggestion and another mark was given to her, this time a straight mark on her forehead. After the mark, Oshimiri performed more rituals and left.

Two days later, Olamma died and was buried. Three months after her burial, Uloma, her mother went into labour.
