Mark:” Gabriel, am getting suspicious of you o, you first asked me if I had the lab key, I didn’t react, now you are asking me about a recorder, tell me, what are you up to?” He asked me , we were now siting on a long bench by the left side of the school pitch.


Me:” Hmmm,Mark can I trust you?” I asked him and he nodded, I then narrated everything about Charles ordeal to him. His expression after the story clearly showed he pitied Charles.


Mark:”But Gabi, this is a big risk. I am the only student with the lab keys, if anything gets missing, I will surely be the suspect.” He said.


Me:”Senior mark, I already have this planned out in a way that you can’t be suspected, Charles is one of us,he is dying silently. Please you are the only one that can save him.”


Mark:”Hmm, yeah, I have come across series of recorders in the lab anytime I clean the drawer everyday, but I Dont know what its for” he said again.

Me:”One recorder there is the salvation for our Charles” I said to him.


Mark:”If I do this, I am doing it for you and not for Charles, am doing this because you do give me the ball to score always.” He said smiling this time, I also smiled back and shaked him.


Me:”Thanks senior, Make sure you Dont get caught.” I told him and he nodded as he stood up to go. I also stood up to go but sighted joy coming from back door of the canteen, she was wearing a worried look. She must have probably been looking for me.


Joy:” Guy, what are you doing here?” She asked me while I smiled.


Me:”So my name is now guy?”


Joy:” Are you a lady before?” She asked again.

Me:” Jamb question ” I replied her while she gave me a punch on my shoulder.


Me:” are your hands made of foam?” I asked her and she tried to give me another one again but I held her hand and turned it to her back.


Joy:” Gabriel, stop, stop, its painful now, please stop” she cried but I didn’t stop.


Joy:” Ohhh, gabi, please, I swear I won’t abuse you again” she pleaded again.


Me:” Say am sorry sir”


Joy:” Ahhh, am sorry sir ” she said reluctantly while I released her.


Me:” I never knew you were this humble” I said while she eyed me.


Joy:”You are a king Kong” she abused while I only smiled. I looked up beyond her and sighted Charles coming towards me.


Me:”Guess who is coming” I said smiling and she turned to look.


Joy:”That goat, is that why you are smiling?” She asked


Me:”He isn’t a goat ” I said to Joy while she looked at me confused.


Charles:” Hugine, how far “he greeted as he came close to us.


Me:” Am good Charles” I replied his greeting while Joy looked on still confused.


Me:” Joy meet my new friend Charles Oluwafemi ” I said to joy smiling but she didn’t smile back, she only frowned.


Joy:” Gabi, what game are you playing now? ”


Me:” Sorry I didn’t tell you, Charles here is my new friend ” I said to her again.


Joy:” What foolish friend, Gabriel are you drunk? ” she shouted at me while I pulled her hand closer, almost immediately Charles knelt down .

Charles:” Joy, please am sorry for all what I might have caused you, please I can’t start explaining now but I think Hugine will be able to tell you everything” he said almost in tears, Joy on her side wasn’t moved to pity, she just stood arm akimbo. I looked at her and hissed as I drew Charles up.


Me:”Its okay bro” I told him


Joy:”Gabi are you mad?” She asked while I adjusted my glasses.


Joy:” How are you sure he doesn’t have an audio recorder in his pocket, I can see you haven’t learned from what happened.” She said and turned her back to go but I drew her hand back.


Joy:”Leave me alone, Goat” she shouted angrily but I still held her, then she rose the other hand to slap me, her hands came close enough to my cheeks and stopped, ” this girl is daring” I thought.

Joy:” Hugine just leave me alone or I will slap you ”


Me:” You are almost there ” I told her .


Charles:”I swear , I am changed ” he said as he dipped his hand in his pockets and brought out the contents, there wasn’t any recorder there.


Joy:” I can’t trust this thing, we cant tell what he has in mind now” she shouted as she struggled to free her hand from my grip.


Me:” Why Dont you just here him out ” I said to her.


Joy:” Gabriel I never knew you were such a big fool you know.” She said, I now thought the insult were now too much and I let go of her hand.

Me:” OK, Charles let’s go ” I told him as I drew his hands away.


Joy:” Gabriel, gab” she called out but I didn’t turn back.

Joy:”Am sorry ” she shouted again but I still didn’t answer her.


Charles:” Gabi forgive her ”
he said as he stopped me just in front of the canteen’s back door.


Charles: ” let’s go back to her ” he said again and I agreed and turn back to where she was still standing.


Me:”Are you ready to hear me out now?” I asked again and she nodded meekly like a new born.


Me:” Good” I said as I explained everything go her. By the time I was done, it was already break over and joy had gotten a place in her heart to forgive Charles. We walked back to the class in different directions, nothing was wrong, we only did it to avoid suspicion.


====> it was the match day, the field was filled with student from my college and those of fisher’s college. Joy was also in the field, so also was Sandra and other girls in my class. All our teachers including the principal were also there. A senior student , Olu was the captain,he also uses glasses like myself and Charles. I, Charles, Akpan and Mark were on bench, it was a friendly match and there wasn’t any limit for making substitutions.. Mr. Sam the visual art teacher was the commentator from our school, another man represented their school, his name from what I heard happened to be Mr kelechi.


Mr Kelechi:” Good afternoon sam, I think its is a good weather today for a football match” the field echoed, I didn’t even know where they were talking from.

Mr. Sam:”Yeah, indeed its a good day and its gonna be a interesting match between fisher’s college and the Green’s ” he also said. The first eleven players walked out in their beautiful jerseys, our own jersey was a blue top and short, a blue hose and a white booth. I also had my jersey on and I was sitting on a long bench provided for the substitute.


Mr Sam:” let’s go ” he Said as the ref blew the kickoff whistle, the fisher’s college were to pass first.


Mr.Kelechi:”Its indeed nice seeing the great captain Olu of Mr. Green college again” he said as Olu waved his hand up to the sky and the crowd roar in happiness.


Mr Sam:”Nice and accurate pass from the midfielders of the fisher college, whoa nice through pass to the centre , Mazugbe with the ball the defender is out of the way, Oh no, the shot wasn’t a nice one.” He shouted as the Fisher’s striker Mazugbe made the first attempt for his school.

====> It was now 56 minutes of play, I was still on bench, my school was down by two goals to non.

Coach Theo:”Hugine, Charles, Akpan and mark” he called out and we all stood up and went to him.

Coach:” The four of you shall be going as in for the four forward now” he said and I smiled broadly.

Mr.Kelechi:” I see the coach of Mr.green college wanna make some changes, I can see the dreaded striker Charles, the left winger Mark, Akpan the right Man but I Dont know that last handsome guy” his word echoed on the field again.


Mr Sam:” That is Hugine, our newest player. ” he said as Olu and three other players came out for us, the captainship badge was given to Akpan.


Mr. Kelechi:” I hope this Hugine has something good for your school.” He said as I jogged in. One of my three midfielders took the ball as it was our throwing, he threw it to another midfielder chest and that one passed it to Charles.

Mr.Sam:”It’s Charles with the ball” he said calmly, he was no longer in a good mood, his school was the losing team. Charles dropped the ball for mark but mark was dispossessed.


Mr Sam:”Oh no” I heard.


Mr Kelechi:” I think the student of Mr green college have to learn how to hold the ball, Mazugbe again, going for the third goal, space in the centre and oh a blockage ” he shouted as one of my defenders blocked the ball and it went to one of my midfielders who passed to me.


Mr. Kelechi:”Now let’s see what this Hugine can do with the ball ” he said. I held the ball in the centre, I noticed Akpan who had made a nice run to the right wing and released the ball to him.


Mr Sam:”Whoaaa, what a pass by Gabriel, that was awesome. ” he shouted as the spectators began to shout. Akpan did not let the ball rest as he passed the ball to Charles just in front of their 18 yard box.


Mr Sam:”This can be it ” he shouted, Charles released the ball to me, I braked the ball and stood on it, two defenders advance towards me, I smiled to myself as I saw mark making his run to their box, I still held the ball like I wanted to dribble them and this Made them come more forward. Now there was a big space in their box, I then released the ball to mark, the ball passed through their middle.


Mr Sam:”Hugine is a killer ” he shouted. Mark didn’t let the ball rest as he height the keeper and the ball found the net.


Mr Sam:”Its a gooooooooooalllllll” he shouted as the dead Mr green fans also came back to life.


Mr Kelechi:”Fantastic ” he said calmly.
Mark picked the ball and kept it in the middle for them to pass and they did.


====> it was now 75 minute and the scores was still two to one, I was with the ball in the centre, I height the player in front of me and the ball landed on Charles leg, he also passed the ball to Akpan by the right, Akpan dropped the ball on the free space just in front of their 18 yard box, I ran towards the ball like I was going to play it, but I didn’t, I passed the ball back a little to Charles who was just behind me, this my act deceived the keeper and he fell, Charles took advantage of that a released a strong shot which entered the free net.


Mr. Sam:” unbelievable, they equalized. ” he shouted happily and the fans screamed the more.


Mr Kelechi:” it looks like the Fisher’s are relenting” he said .

Two minutes to the stoppage time, I got the ball from a goal kick, I pushed forward with it, I passed through all the midfielders, I cut away one defender, height the second and I counted a leg over for the third, the leg over made him fall leaving me alone with the keeper.


Mr Sam: ” This isn’t true” he shouted, the keeper came forward to get the ball and I also dribbled pass him leaving alone with the net, I slowly played the ball into the net.


Mr Sam:”He is a virus, he attacks and destroys the opponent’s immune system” he shouted as my school fans went into a wide Jubilation, for the first time, the Fisher’s were defeated.
