Secondary - Season 1 - Episode 18

Mrs Jones:” Why are you staring at me like that? You want to beat me like you almost did to Mrs Jagun?” She asked while I shaked my head and headed to the back seat. Another boy Akpan occupied my seat.

Mrs Jones:
” Now let start, but there is a problem, we have three rows but we only have the option to oppose or support. Now the both of you in the middle row, join either the left or right row.” She said referring to Mary and Charles my class mates who occupied the middle row. Mary went to join Akpan and Sandra while Charles Joined Bernard and Sarah, my class mates also.

Mrs Jones:
” Akpan,Sandra, and Mary you support children. Bernard, Charles and Sarah, you support parent and remember that we Dont know if we are going to oppose or support, so I want the two groups to put in their best, two people are going to be picked from the science class and two from art class also, the commercial class would not be chanced. Now let’s start, who goes first?” She asked while Sandra stood up almost immediately.

Sandra:” I am Sandra, standing here to as a representative of the sss 1 class to convince you that the children are the ones to pick a career course of study but before I proceed, let me give honour to whom another is due. Good day Mr. Chairman, panel of judges, accurate time keeper and my co- debaters. The children are the ones to pick because erm, erm.” She stopped as she seems to have no point.

Mrs Jones:
”Encourage her, she tried, Akpan continue from where she stopped.” The teacher said trying to hide her disappointment from Sandra while the student gave a short clap.

Akpan:
”Standing before you is Akpan John, am here to make you see reason with me why children are meant to pick the career course of study they want. But before I proceed, I would like to recongnize the presence of the Chairman, Panel of Judges, Accurate time keeper and my co-debaters, I say Good day to them all. Let me start with this, the parent should never pick courses for their children so as not to be blamed for future failures, all parent want their childrn to become successful in life but picking a career course for them is a path to failure. It is because you have literally destroyed the dream, ambition, and interest of the child, that child won’t place focus on the course chosen for him like he will do on the one he chose for himself.” At this point, the class interrupted him with claps and shout of joy, I was not left out, I clapped in joy for him as he carefully lay down his points.

Mrs Jones:
”Nice one John, now I would like to hear from the side opposing them, who goes first?” She asked again while Charles got up gently, he is a tall handsome guy, he also uses specks like me.

Charles:
” Am Charles, Charles Oluwafemi. A representative of the sss 1 class and standing here to tell you boldly and make you understand that the Parents have every right, I mean every right to choose the career course for the children. But before I proceed, I say a big good day to the chairman, impartial Judges and time keeper. I would like to start by saying that no one here know him or herself more than the parent. The Parent are the ones that watched you grow, they watched you play with friends, they know what you have interest in, they know what you play with most and what you dislike the most, now tell me, can someone who knows all these pick the wrong choice for you? Okay let’s leave the part of the Parent, let’s go to the creator himself, God. God himself in his book, Ephesians 6 verse 6 said that the children should obey their parent in the lord for this is right. Now tell me, even though you parent can lie to you, is God also going to lie to you? He has said it himself that we should follow the instructions of our parents, if……”
This time he was interrupted by a long clap, even Mrs Jones Joined in clapping this time, I did not want to clap because I supported Akpan’s team but I soon found myself doing so.

Mrs Jones:
”Wow, wow, wow, nice one Charles. Now back to the side of the children, Mary your turn” she said as Mary also stood up to give her point. She also tried but not as Charles nor Akpan. Bernard and Sarah also gave their points. From their performances, Charles was the best while Sandra was the worst, she was not able to develop anything.

Mrs Jones:
”Okay, now if the sss 1 class opposes, the representatives from this class should be Charles and Bernard, but if they support, then Akpan and Sandra should represent us” she said and walked out immediately, I was stunned, Sandra that could not say anything, what sort of corruption is this.

Junior Student:
”The principal asked me to call Senior Gabriel Hugine” a junior boy that just entered the class said and ran out immediately.

“me again??” I thought while the students looked at me with eyes full of pity, I need no prophet to tell me I was in trouble, but still i adjusted my glasses.
