” Sister Tola, you see. We really have to be prayerful” He started.

“The devil is roaring, and he is looking for who to devour” he continued. “Ehn ehn! I knew it. It’s the devil and your father’s family members. They don’t want me to reap the fruits of my labour” A sob rolled down her eyes.

“Mommy, please don’t start. It’s fine.
Everything will be alright” I said, moving closer to her and wiping away her tears.

When we got back from church, my mom and I prepare a sumptuous meal for Alex.

Since he said he would be with us after he finished from church too, we stirred Poundo yam and cooked vegetables, stocked with small chops of crayfish, meat and cowskin. There was a wine chilling in the fridge for him. “Mommy, na wa for you o, all these for someone you barely know” I said, moving the dishes to the dinning table

” My dear let me do it o, he might be a potential son-in-law. Nobody knows tomorrow.”

” I know how he looks at you anytime he comes here and I have a feeling something will develop between you two soon. I know you are just getting to know each other but that’s where it starts from Adetola. You have to present yourself like a wife material. You have to …..”

” Mom, I’ll go change into something more decent now” I said, cutting her off. I knew my mom so well, once she started whinnings about how to be a good young wife, she wouldn’t stop until something else distracts her and I was in no mood for her sermonizing.

I just had a sermon section in church few hours back.

I dashed into my room and changed from my black tank top and Jean bum shorts to a pink floral flay gown. I dabbed my face with powder using my powder puff and applied a bit of red lipstick. Styling my hair to the side, I went to the living room and switched on the TV. And that was it! My favourite soap opera was showing.

I squealed with glee as I retrieved a bowl of ice cream from the fridge. The ice cream was a chocolate syrup with some vanilla whipped on it.
I slowly wolfed it down and savoured the sweetness of the cream. It satisfied my cravings for something creamy to taste. I took another spoon and closed my eyes in bliss as the tub of ice cream melted down my throat.

I continued watching the soap opera, leg crossed, waiting for Alex but with my mind still on the life threatening messages.

Fifteen minutes later, there was a knock on the door. I scurried to the window to check if he was the one. His car was parked outside.

‘Jeez. He is the one!’ I adjusted my gown and turned the door’s knob. It opened to reveal Alex standing there looking ravishing in a well tailored native outfit. He was looking ten times more tantalizing that I drooled right in front of him. Not wanting him to sense the effect he had on me, I quickly stepped away so as to allow him come in.

“Good afternoon” I greeted curtly.

“Afternoon love. How are you doing? Happy Sunday” he greeted in return. A wave of arousal washed over me, I went from warm to burning hot in a span of seconds. Was it the way he called me ‘love’ or his tempting look? I didn’t know, all I knew was that I wasn’t feeling like myself with him around me.
He continued to study me with slumberous eyes.
Silence dragged along at a torturous pace and with every second that tickled by, my discomfort climbed. “Ah. Alex my dear, you are here.
Afternoon. How are you doing today?” Came my mom’s voice. I gave a breathless sigh. My mom always came around saving me and heated moments all the time. “Am fine ma. How was the church service?” Came his deep masculine voice again.
