Alice flung the door opened with full force, shocking Maria who was reading a novel.
‘what the hell are you doing here woman? I thought you went back to your parents’ house?’ Maria said closing her novel ;a touch of magic by Carin Rafferty.
‘tell me the truth Maria, tell me the truth right now!’ Alice said as she securely locked the door with the key.
‘what are you trying to do? And why are you locking my door? Open it now!’
‘no, i wont. I want you to tell me everything Maria. Tell me everything that happened between you and that Gilbert’
‘meaning?’
‘what i just said’
‘fine, you want to know? We planned everything, we both lied against you so you would rot in prison but unfortunately….you came out, you brought your bad luck out with you……’
A very hot slap on her cheek silenced her. Maria stilled for a moment, unable to say anything. She was shocked! Alice slapped her.
‘answer me. What did Gilbert do to you?’ Alice said trying hard to fight her anger right now.
‘go to hell you demon! You are wicked. Now you are showing your true colour. This is just evidence that you are going to maltreat me once you get married to my dad!’ Maria said rubbing her cheeks painfully.
‘oh really? Should i tell you what maltreatment really is, should i?’
‘do your worst! Animal’
‘i’m an animal abi? No problem, you will regret your decision’ Aice said opening her handbag and brought out her phone.
‘by the time i tell your dad what Gilbert said to me in prison today…..’ she said dialling Tony’s number.
‘so you went to see him in prison abi? The chemistry is still there between you two’
‘shut up! By the time i tell your dad that you were lovers with Gilbert, you would define chemistry for me!’ Alice said placing the phone on her ear.
Maria’s jaw dropped ‘what?’
‘you heard me! Gilbert said he had canal knowledge of you and i’m going to tell your dad right now!’ The phone was ringing already.
Maria stood up on the bed and snatched the phone from Alice ‘explain what you just said!’
‘give me my phone Maria!’
‘i wont! Until you explain what you mean’
‘give me my phone else……’
‘explain to me else…….’
Alice clenched her fists and stared at Maria angrily. Despite the little anger in the girl’s eyes, she also saw fear in them.
‘i would explain to you on the condition that you remain calm and drop your rude attitude’ Alice said.
‘stop giving me conditions!’
‘fine eat the phone’ Alice said picking her handbag and heading towards the door.
‘fine! I would be as polite as i can but dont get on my very nerves’ Maria said calmly.
Alice stopped and turned. Then she went back to Maria’s bed and threw her handbag on it.
‘Gilbert said he raped you’
‘thats a lie!’ Maria snapped immediately.
‘and he said you werent a virgin by the time he raped you silly’
‘thats not true! I was a virgin’
Alice drew back ‘i thought you said he didnt rape you just now?’
‘uh?’ Maria said as her hand went to her mouth ‘i…i…mean….i….i was…was a….i’m…i’m still a virg…in’
Alice went to sit beside Maria on the bed ‘look Maria, you need to start saying the truth. We need to help you. How could you have been raped and didnt mention it to anybody? Thats…that wrong and risky? You could have been pregnant. You could have contacted a sexually transmitted disease, you could have……’

‘STOP!’ Maria said with her left hand up ‘stop contradicting yourself. You didnt seem to understand when i said i wasnt raped!’
‘but i can see through you that you are lying’ Alice said softly, so compassionately that Maria fet like opening her heart to her, telling her things she couldnt tell her own best friend.
‘get out,’ she said gently and almost inaudibly ‘take your phone and leave my room, i dont want to see your face’ Maria said throwing the phone at her.
‘but Maria, i’m here for you, why not share your problems with me?’
‘i said get out!’ Maria said furiously ‘your help is not needed, cant you see?’
‘Maria…..’
‘you want me to throw you out?’
‘fine!’ Alice said taking her hands up in surrender as she took her phone from the bed ‘you dont need my help, but you might need your dad’s help’ she said dialling Tony’s number.
‘what are you doing?’
‘calling your dad’
‘please dont! I would talk’ Maria said frightened.
Alice looked at her ‘are you sure?’
‘i would talk, i promise’
Allice dropped her phone and smiled ‘good, now start talking’
Unknown to then however Ximena was standing by the door listening to their conversation.
