Must Read: Awkward Ways I Met Girls

I felt pity in my heart for Jay. Jay the jolly fellow. Easy going guy. But for one day’s mistake landed him in this net.

A net so thick, it would take a miracle to get him out.

There was fear in Jay’s eyes as he was being led out.

It occurred to me that the detectives were only taking a drink earlier, watching if Jay will attempt to run.

Naturally, its a first option for most who commit a crime. But Jay didn’t make any attempt to bolt. They hadn’t even properly put evidences together as proof that he committed the crime. Not even finger-prints. Let alone arresting him.
I went back in with Bibi. I sat on the floor while she la!d on the bed. The only noise was from the tv, at the barest minimal volume. Must’ve been about an hour later, the gate opened. Jay had come back. I could see he wasn’t in a talking mood. I could feel his fear at being accused of a crime he knew nothing about.
Yes, an innocent man should not fear. But the fear of lazy detectives who would rope the easiest lamb to the gallows than digging any further. Jay had no solid alibi, he had told me that night that he wanted to be alone.

According to everybody who witnedd his quarrel with Rumie, he had a motive. He was getting back at her. Weak motive, if you ask me. Very weak.
Well, he went into his room. I entered back and la!d on the floor still. I drifted off until a tap woke me up
“Pls come and sleep beside me, I’m scared” Bibi was saying. The lights were out and the tv off.

Sleepily, I got on the bed beside her.

“Pls hold me” she said
Still sleepy, I threw my hand over her…
When I woke up, it was a few minutes to 8 the next morning.
Bibi was still beside me on the bed. Choi! If it wasn’t for what happened, I would not have this sweet somtin beside me all night and my pole won’t react.
I got up and sat on the chair
“Good morning” I heard Bibi say
“Good morning”
We exchanged the usual “did u sleep well?” And after a bit of silence, she asked
“Do you think Jay did it?”
“I don’t think its him”
“I think its him. Who else can it be?” She ran through her reasons. Believable reasons though.
I had returned that yesterday to meet a crowd, I missed some vital details. I was curious. How was her body discovered?
Bibi said her dad had called her several times and when she wasn’t responding, he had sent a driver over in the morning. When the driver got to her door, he knocked several times and called, no response. But he could hear a phone ring inside each time he called. He then discovered the door wasn’t locked and decided to peep in.
Around 8:30, there was a knock on the gate. I opened it and Inspector Okoro and a colleague stepped in. They went to Jay’s door and knocked. When he opened, Okoro’s colleague began
“Mr Jay, you are under arrest for the murder of Miss Rumie Akeh. Anything you say can and may be used against you in court…”
Cuffs were placed on Jay and I almost cried for Jay. I couldn’t bear it.
Jay was a real soldier. I loved that nicca, no homo. Seeing him in cuffs weakened me badly. He looked at me and I could see innocence. In his eyes was a subtle plea for mercy. Jay was scared. I saw it in his eyes. Jay was being arrested for murder.

I asked what station they were taking him to and I was told.

Jay also asked me to call his brother, saved on his contact list as ‘Sam’.

I followed them as they led him to a waiting car and drove away.

I went back in and called his brother. Sam was already aware of developments. Jay must have called him and told him everything. It was unfortunate that that night, Jay had taken a stroll to clear his head and so hadn’t gone anywhere in particular. Sad.

I felt bad. Bibi came to hold me and said that she really thinks its Jay who had killed Rumie. That he only seemed quiet on the outside. She went on to tell me about Jay. Well, from her own perception.

Not the Jay I knew. In fact, that was clear character assassination. I took some money and left.
To the station. I saw Jay’s brother already there. He went in alone to see Jay. He was being charged to court. And they needed a lawyer.
He couldn’t afford one. Cos only a good lawyer can fight this case and win. And the case will cost quite a sum.

I later went back home. Along with a bottle of Elliot. I needed a drink real bad. And something to refresh my mind, maybe I can think clearly afterwards.

Almost about same time I got home, Rumie’s father arrived. I never met him. He introduced himself. Bibi greeted him. And from their formal greetings, I don’t think they’ve ever met. He seemed a kind man though. And when he spoke, the way he reasoned showed.

“Are you Stag?”

“Yes sir”
“Rumie talks much of you.” Rumie’s mentioned me? That surprised me.
“And she said you would accompany her to an errand she was to run for me”
“I don’t know if its same errand but yes, she asked me to accompany toa site to pay some workers there”

“Ok. Yes, that’s what she was to help me do”
After a brief moment, he said
“Can I have a talk with you outside?”
We talked. The coroner had said she was strangled. But there was no evidence of struggling. The only marks on her were around her neck. He also said something else was found in her system. Cyproheptadine. A quantity too much. Normally, its to induce sleep. But too much of it could cause something else.

Well, that way by the way. He asked if I knew where Rumie would have kept the money she withdrew.

Oops! I was surprised.

“I don’t think she withdrew any money. I thought she’d withdraw the money and head straight to the site. Why would she have that kind of money with her?”
By the time we finished talking… I had more clues to help solve thi mystery.

I gave my condolence and he left. I went back in for my drink.

Inside the room, Bibi was preparing to bath and when she took off her top, my eyes were on her.

I poured a drink, still looking at her bakassi.

I started to remember all the fvcking we had. Sweet girl,.. Hmmmm… My rod hardened!
