Must Read: Awkward Ways I Met Girls

I eventually went out around 12 leaving Jay at home. But Bibi had gone out. But instead of meeting Rumie as we planned, she called and said it wasn’t much necessary, that she could manage things. That Bibi was meeting her.

Okies… No problem.

Later around 4pm when I got home, Rumie told me why she had wanted me to come help her. On behalf of her dad, she was to pay workers on his site that day, but had decided to shift it till the next day. She had called the site manager and arranged for it to be the next day.

And asked if I would be available to accompany her. I agreed to. Apart from being close to her, Rumie was a really cool person and I won’t refuse her anything if I could.
it wasn’t 10 minutes later after we finished that Jay came in. As he reached to apologize to Rumie, I think over her vase, Rumie flared up.
I was shocked. All the time I’ve known Rumie I have never seen her in this manner. She was behaving out of her usual self. And of all people, Jay?

I first thought it was a joke o. The situation degenerated when Jay tried to convince her it was a mere accident and not intentional. Rumie fired back that it was Jay’s fault, had the light been on.
Na wa o. Why the sudden change in attitude over this vase cos I remember I had mentioned it to her and she didn’t feel that bad. I tried calming her down but things only got worse. They were almost getting physical. Rumie was on fire and boiling. Seriously boiling.
It attracted the attention of people from the main building. And in a short time, our part of the house was rowdy, cos neighbors from the next buildings also came. Jay had gotten really mad. And of course you know a typical Nigerian fight, someone must be like
“What can you do?” That was Rumie
“I will show you” coming from Jay
Amidst vulgar abuses, shouting etc. It eventually died down.

Bibi had taken Rumie into her room and I went inside to Jay. Gradually, people left.
Everybody wondered how a person like Jay could offend a person like Rumie this much.
Two unlikely characters for this kind of a scenario.
Around 6, Jay told me he’d be going away for some time the next morning. Just to cool off. And if fact, he was going to have a drink alone, that he was really mad at Rumie.

He left. I went into Rumie’s room and she was saying she had a headache. I told her to wait for me while I got her panadol. She said I should not bother, that Bibi would help her get it.
So I left her to rest. I decided to go and sit outside.
I saw Bibi outside thanking the neighbors from the main building for coming to separate the fight, and was telling them she won’t be around briefly. I passed without interrupting them.
Woow! Bibi won’t be around? Damn! This night of all nights when I thought things will get down again. Even forgetting Rumie was back.
I sat at mummy-Ade’s shop with snacks and a drink. Not far off, I saw come out of the pharmacy on same street. Seeing her whole figure excited me much. Just then Clara called. She said she’d stop by.

She later joined me on her way from work. We both chilled there chatting with snacks. She too was surprised at Jay and Rumie quarreling. Of any two people to fight, Jay and Rumie were unlikely.
When the traffic to her place had subsided, she left. I returned home and saw the man living in the main building outside. We chatted a while, both of us expressing the shock of Rumie and Jay quarreling over a broken vase. He asked if there was more to it. Well, not that I know of.
As we chatted, he heard the NTA news begin, so he said he was going in to watch the news.
I got in and went straight to my room. I guess everyone has had enough for one day.
I was regretting the fact that Bibi won’t be around tonight.
Well, when my eyes opened again, it was next morning.
I got prepared for the day. By the time it was 9am I wondered why I hadn’t heard Rumie up. Well, Bibi isn’t around so maybe she decided to sleep a little more.

When I went out to buy soap to bath with I heard her phone ringing. Some minutes later, I returned and as I was entering my room, I heard her phone ringing again.

I shrugged, she’s probably still pissed from yesterday’s drama.

When I was eventually leaving the house, I knocked on Jay’s door and he wasn’t in. I hit me that our mini gate wasn’t locked last night. It was closed but not bolted.
Well, I stepped out into the day…

Sometime around noon, I tried to call Rumie to know how she was doing. She didn’t pick up her phone. I dialed Bibi’s number, she didn’t pick up.

My mind just wasn’t at work that day so I left early. By 4pm I was already on my street walking home.

As I approached, I noticed a crowd gathered around my gate. And I saw a police vehicle parked in front.

What could be the matter? I hope they hadn’t been fighting again.

But the look on people’s faces and their mannerisms told me something worse had happened…

Just in behind the police van was an ambulance.

What could have been the matter?! My mind began to race.

It was made worse when started to hear people say
“Eyahhhh”
“Na wa o”
“This life sef”
“Wetin dey this life”
My walk hurried into a run and as I got to the front of my mini gate, two policemen blocked me from entering
“Do you live here?”

“Yes, excuse, I live here…”

Just then Bibi flung herself at me crying uncontrollably, full of tears…

“Rumie is dead!”
