“Alright, sir.”
And I watched him scuffle out of the kitchen.
“Idiot! You might as well just eat s--t!” I angrily muttered under my breath.
On several occasions, I’d thought of poisoning these fools and getting this over with but that would have been too good a punishment for the atrocities they’d put me through so I refrained from doing so. I simply made breakfast and served the food on the dining table. I then went to summon them all.
They all gathered around the dining table. Namely, Nancy, Cynthia, Jason, Justin and Cynthia and Justin’s twins, Alex and Amos.
As was the trend, I had to stand somewhere and watch them have their breakfast in case they needed something. To be honest, I sometimes envied them, wishing I had been a part of this happy family.

Glancing at the heavily pregnant Nancy who was being lovingly fed by Jason, I had a vague sense of longing.

It would have been me there, I thought. But they snatched that opportunity from me too.
Many were the times that I felt like going to the kitchen and from the cutlery, getting a butcher knife and stabbing all of them to death. But that too, would have been too good a punishment.

“Mable!” Nancy sternly said, snapping me from my reverie. “We asked you something?”

“You did?” I stammered. “Sorry, my thoughts had wandered off somewhere.”
“Are you feeling okay?” said Justin, sipping his on orange juice.

“Am fine.” I flatly said, flashing a smile.
Nancy sighed. “Jason was complementing your work. How would you like a raise?”
“Anything’s fine by me.”
Cynthia shrugged. “A raise it is then.” she said, feeding one of her twins.

Just then, Nancy let out a scream. And now all attention was drawn towards her.
“Are you okay?” Jason hurriedly asked, trying to help her up.

“The baby,” she said at once. “I think it’s coming!”
Where I stood, I smiled. “Great!” I muttered in an inaudible voice. “Let the epic showdown begin!”

It was past 11 P.M when the man I’d hired approached me, a newborn baby wrapped in shawls in his hands.

For security reasons, I was wearing one of the masks that the gang members and I used to wear whenever we were on a mission.
I beamed upon seeing Rodgers. “You really are good at what you do.” I said, smiling widely as I got the baby from his arms.
The baby was cute and tiny. But he had Jason’s eyes.

My baby would have been more than a year old today, I thought.

“Boss,” said Rodgers breathlessly, “smuggling the baby out of the hospital wasn’t easy but I finally managed to.”

“That’s so nice of you.” I told him, handing him a brown envelope. “The money’s in there, intact!”
He smiled. “You the best boss,” said Rodgers enthusiastically, getting the envelope from my firm grip. “No wonder am at your disposal.”

I let out a hearty laugh. “Good night, Rodgers. I’ll give you a call when next am in need of your services.”

As soon as Rodgers was gone, I got into my Altezza and drove off.

As I revved the engine, Nancy’s baby began to cry.

“Poor thing,” I told the baby, caressing it’s cheek, “it’s sad you have to pay for your parents’ sins. No worries though, Aunty Cathy will find you a perfect family. One that will love and adore you. Unlike those monster parents of yours. What values will they instill in you? Hate? Envy? Betrayal? Be grateful am even separating you from them, otherwise you’d have led a miserable life under the care of those backstabbing hooligans.”

Not wanting to attract attention, I didn’t go to my house in Mtendere that night. Instead, I checked in at Nena’s Lodge and passed the baby as my own.

The following day, everything was in favour of me. Not being on duty at the Banda mansion came in handy that day. At least I could smuggle the baby to South Africa without raising suspicions. Passing the baby as my own, I flew to Durban.
