As the courtesy of another doctor in S.A, I now had a different voice. In the calm sweet voice, I said, “Morning madam. I’ve been knocking from gate to gate looking for a job.”
Cynthia folded her hands and rudely eyed me from head to toe.


I was wearing a loose yellow top, old and faded brown pencil skirt and old flip flops.
“How did you know I am looking for a maid?” she asked. “My other maid phoned this morning saying she had quit, nevermind.”

“As I said earlier, I’ve been knocking-”
“Alright!” she snapped, cutting me short.
“When would you like to start?” said Cynthia rudely.
“Right away!” I excitedly exclaimed.
“And your name is?”
Cathy. Catherine Chilumba. “Mable, Mable Sakala.”

“Come in, Mable or whatever you’re called.”

And she moved aside. We were now walking side by side. Cynthia said, “You are currently on probation. We’ll discuss your pay when I notice how good you are at what you do.”
“Thanks,” I quietly said, grinning. “That’s so kind of you madam.”
