Monster Unleashed - Season 1 - Episode 26

.
Whilst in the cubicle where the toilet was located, I had noticed the scars on my hands, left forearm, abdomen, thighs and right calf. But this one outdid them all.

I froze on the spot. My gaze focused in the mirror that was reflecting my face. Once upon a time, I had been the beautiful Catherine Chilumba but now, now I was an ugly woman with a badly burnt face. The scars were so bad that I doubted anything could be done for me to look as beautiful as I had once been.

Tears began to fall down my scarred cheeks as I recalled Cynthia set the cabin on fire.
I was now sobbing as the memories of my pleas with all of them flashed before my face now. It was like everything had happened the day before. They had all left me for dead. If it wasn’t for God using Mr. Zimba, then I would have been history by now.

As I sobbed much louder in awe of my appearance, I recalled mum. How was she? I bet she was devastated.

Mr. Zimba said I’ve been in a comma for four months, I thought. If that’s true, mum must be dead worried about me. I need to go see her. Right away.

I now washed my scarred face and wiped it with a clean towel that had been propped on a hook against the wall. I stepped out of the bathroom to my ward. The door was ajar. I was about to go in when the conversation inside took my attention.
“Do you think we should tell Cathy about her baby?” said Mr. Zimba.

He and the Chinese doctor were standing besides the bed where I had once been lying.
The doctor shook his head. “She says she doesn’t recall anything else except her name,” replied the doctor warily, “it’s best we keep this from her for the time being.”

I heard footsteps from behind me. Out of impulse, I wrenched the door wide open and stepped into the ward.
“What baby are you talking about?” I loudly asked.

Silence.
“I asked you people something!” I said, more fiercely than intended.
“Cathy it’s something that doesn’t concern you.” said Mr. Zimba quietly, gesturing for me to take a seat.
“He’s right.” said the doctor at once. “We were-”
“Don’t lie to me!” I snapped. “I heard my name and the word ‘baby’ in the same sentence, tell me what’s going on!”
The doctor sighed. “Take a seat then.”
I sat on the bed.

“After staying in this place for about five weeks,” said the doctor, sitting besides me. “While running tests on you, we discovered you were pregnant. Since you were too weak and in a comma, the fetus in your womb stopped growing in the third month. In other words, it died. Am sorry, we had to remove it from your womb.”

Tears began streaming down my cheeks again. A baby? Dead? This was becoming too much to bare. This officially made me the mother of two dead children. First, I had given birth to a still-born baby whilst in high school and now this? This other baby would have survived had it not been for Jason, Justin, Cynthia and Nancy. They were to blame for this.

Mr. Zimba crouched down before me and patted my shoulders. “Dear,” he said in a fatherly tone, “do you perhaps remember the father of your miscarried child?”
“Mr. Zimba!” scolded the doctor. “Stop putting pressure on her. It’s not good for her health.”

“It’s fine,” I said, wiping the tears. The father of my child? Of course I remember him. Jason, the backstabbing son of a b---h! “Am afraid I don’t recall being with any man.” I lied.

“It’s fine. Your memory will certainly come back.” said the doctor. “The fact that you know your name’s a good sign.”

The following day, I was released from the hospital.

“My husband and I are taking you to my place.” said Mrs. Zimba. I had only met her this morning and she seemed to be a nice lady. She and I were now seated in the backseat. Her husband was behind the wheel, driving us to where I guessed their home was located. We were now just joining Burma road.

I shook my head. “You people have done more than enough for me.” I said, patting the lovely lady’s hands. “And I’ll be forever indebted to you. But I think I’ll find my way home.”
