It was now past 3 P.M. Nancy and I had stayed in the car waiting for Jason to show up for hours now. We had first gone to his office but he wasn’t there so we decided to wait for him at his place.

“Cathy,” said Nancy, “we’ve been here for hours! Am starving. Besides-”
I held up my hand. “I think it’s high time you went home. Check on mum and tell me how she’s taking the news.”
“And you?”
“Am fine. I’ll wait for Jason Banda and confront him.” I said, leaning back in my seat as I sent Jason curses on social media. “I’ll wait for that sneaky son of a b---h! Even if it’s the last thing I do!”
Nancy jumped onto a cab and went home. An hour later, she gave me a call.

“The situation’s terrible.” she said. “The news is all over the place to say in order to repay your many debts, you sold your company to the Bandas.”
I clicked my tongue. “I know. I’ve seen all that crap on social media. My concern is mum, how’s she doing?”
Nancy went silent.

“Nancy?”
She heaved a sigh and said, “I hear aunt had an asthma attack upon hearing the devastating news.”
I gasped. I must go home asap, I thought.

As if reading my thoughts, Nancy said, “No need to worry, she’s doing fine now.”
“Thank God!” I thought out loud.
“But I must warn you, she’s mad at you.” said Nancy.

“She ought to be. I screwed up real bad. And Cynthia? I bet she’s enjoying all this.”
She clicked her tongue. “That witch? She’s at work but I bet she’s so eager to get home and mock us to the core!” she paused. “Is there any development that side?”
I shook my head as if Nancy could see me. “No.”

10:23 P.M. found me dozing off in my car. I shook my head, this Jason guy was obviously not gonna show up.

I muttered. “Ifishikumana fiwa(only ghosts don’t meet)!” and revved my engine.
Jason wasn’t going to hide from me forever. As I left the street where Jason’s mansion was located, I saw Cynthia’s car race by. Out of impulse, I decided to trail her.
After driving after her for over 40 minutes, I found myself in some bushes. I parked my car at a distance from Cynthia’s and followed her into the bushes. After trekking for over ten minutes, I saw a cabin erected on a landing. Cynthia glanced over her shoulder and went in. I hurried after her. I was about to go in when I heard voices.
“Cynthia!” exclaimed Jason. “What took you so long?”

I was now peeping through a hole in the door and with the aid of a dim light casted by a candle, I could make out Cynthia, Justin and Jason.

Cynthia took a seat on a Morris chair and said, “The situation’s tense at home. Had to make sure mum didn’t notice me leave the goddamned place.”
“No problemo!” exclaimed Justin, joining Cynthia on the Morris chair. “I missed you, my love.” and he kissed her on the lips.
So these fools are working together? I thought. Good, let me call the police. I was about to dial 911 but refrained from doing so.
What will I tell the police? Let me just eavesdrop on them. Maybe I can get some concrete evidence that can send those frauds to jail.

I placed my ear hard against the door.
Jason was saying. “What’s taking her so long?”

“Relax!” Cynthia fired at him, she was still in Justin’s embrace. “She’ll be here shortly. Trust me.”
Now I was confused. Who’s this ‘she’ they are talking about?
But my question was answered shortly when someone tapped me on my shoulder. I turned on the spot. A tall figure was standing right in front of me. I couldn’t make out who it was cause the bushes were dark.
“Curiosity killed the cat huh?” the figure asked, raising a log of wood high above their head. The voice was painfully familiar. Before I could even utter a single word, I felt a hard blow on my head. I toppled over and fell in the dirt. The blow came again, and again, and again. Before I knew it, I was unconscious.
