9:00 A.M. the following day found me seated in my usual chair in the conference room. I had asked Nancy to call for a meeting so that we could discuss the way forward.

My lawyer was saying, “At least the construction company will have to carter for the compensation concerning the deceased and injured workers.”

I sighed. “That’s one heavy load lifted off our shoulders.”
“But what about Mr. Njobvu’s demands?” asked a member of the board of directors, Mr. Adkins.

“Yes.” said another member, “his demands are insane.”
“I know.” I quietly said. “But we have to meet them lest we invite unnecessary publicity…”

After an hour and a half, we came to the conclusion that we get a loan from the bank and pay Mr. Njobvu his money. Loans were the last thing on my mind. I recall dad had sold one of his precious possessions in order to repay some of his debts. And he had sworn never to indulge in debts again. Dad had gone as far as making me promise I wasn’t going to involve myself in debts. But what was I to do? Desperate times call for desperate measures right?

Anyway, 1 P.M. found me at O’Haggan’s, having lunch with Jason.
“And you plan on getting a loan?” Jason asked incredulously when I told him what I was going to do.
“Yes,” I replied, literally playing with my food. I had no appetite, “the Njobvu guy seems to be sent from hell and he won’t back down. Not until we pay him all his money.”

“And how much are you planning on borrowing?”
“K200 000.”

Jason scowled. “That’s a huge amount!” he exclaimed. “Repaying it is gonna milk you dry!”

“What else ought I do?”
Jason leaned forward. “Here’s what we’ll do,” he said, patting my hand, “I’ll call for a meeting and discuss the issue with the board of directors. We might not be involved in the Njobvu project but we are still partners so it’ll be easy for us to give you a loan. 5% interest.”

“Are you serious?” I gasped.
Jason nodded, flashing a slight grin. “If it were up to me, I’d give you the money for free.”

Without hesitating, I planted a kiss on Jason’s lips. Jason and I had become business partners a few months ago and I was more than glad to know I’d made the right decision in doing so.
“Aren’t you gonna investigate the whole incident?” Nancy asked as the driver drove us home. “I mean, this whole thing’s too fishy. How on earth does a building just collapse?”

“Nancy,” I said, eyeing her intently, “if it were that easy, I would have done it. But everything’s expensive nowadays and the company already has a lot on it’s plate. I wouldn’t want to add more stress-”

My phone buzzed. It was Jason.
“Hello?” I said in high spirits. I had been expecting his call for hours.
“The deal’s sealed.” Jason enthusiastically said, “All you need to do is sign some papers.”

I smiled. “When can I sign them?”
“Right away. Come over to my place. Just leaving the office.”
“I love you, Jason.” I honestly said.
“Love you too, Cathy.” And the line went dead.

“Stop here.” I told the driver. “Am certain Nancy’s tired and wants to get some rest so take her straight home.”

I glanced at my watch, 6:33 PM. Nancy was eyeing me now. “Are you going to tell me what Jason said?” she asked.
“Later.” I replied flatly, kissing her on the cheek and with my purse in my hands, leaving the car.
“Cathy!”

But I was on the other side of the road signalling for a taxi to stop. I finally jumped on one and told the driver my destination. All this seemed too good to be true.

Maybe I am dreaming, I thought. I need to get to Jason’s asap! He’s such a darling. No, he’s my knight in shining armor. What would I have done without him?
