I was seated in my room. Thinking about how I was going to get myself out of this sticky situation. I ran my hands through my weave and began to pace up and down.
“My God,” I thought aloud, “why me? How on earth did the mall collapse? Is there someone behind this? And Mr. Njobvu, does he seriously want his money back?”
It had been over an hour since I’d arrived home and as soon as Mr. Njobvu stepped out of the house, I decided to shut myself in my room. Nancy had b@nged on the door asking I let her in but I paid no attention to her pleas. I had now cried my eyes dry, not knowing what to do…

There came a bang on the door.
“Nancy,” I tiredly said, “I thought I told you not to-”
“It’s me.” said Jason flatly.
“Jason?”
“Yes.”

I hurriedly wrenched the door open and flung myself onto Jason.

“My God, am so glad you here!” I said over his shoulder.

After the hug, Jason held my hand and ushered me to the balcony. I noticed the media was now gone and I spotted mum’s car drive in.

“It was really difficult to get that lot out of here.” said Jason, standing by my side and holding the barricade. He was gesturing towards the spot where a mob of news reporters had stood an hour ago.
“Cathy,” Jason said softly, placing his hand over my shoulder, “am sorry about this whole mess. If there’s anything I can do to help, I’ll be more than glad to do so.”
“Jason,” I said, my voice breaking from the sorrow I was feeling, “Mr. Njobvu wants his money back. He’s given me only 48 hours. Now 47..”

“Shhh. My love, don’t let that guy pull you down. It ain’t your fault the building collapsed you know? Let him take you to court if he likes.”

“Am afraid it’s not that easy,” I quietly said, leaning my head on Jason’s masculine chest, “apparently, the construction company’s to blame. And sadly, it was my company that hired the crew so yeah, we’re at fault here.”

Jason heaved a sigh and said, “Then give the guy his money and get him off your back, love.”

“Am sorry it ain’t that simple. My company’s incurred huge losses and giving Mr. Njobvu K350 000 would be as good as intentionally making the company go bankrupt!”

“The situations tough,” said Jason sadly, turning and making me face him. He held me up by my chin, “but I promise we’ll get through this. We’re in it together.”

There was a knock on the door in my room and before I could answer, I heard the door squeak open. Seconds later, someone called, “Cathy?”
“Over here.” I called back in a low tone.

Mum emerged from my room, joining us on the balcony. She hurried towards me and pulled me into a tight embrace.
“My daughter,” she sobbed, “I know this is tough but we’ll surely get through this. It’s just a phase and am certain the God I serve won’t forsake us…”
