Monster Unleashed - Season 1 - Episode 7

.
It had been over an hour since Jason had stepped into the kitchen. I had remained in the lounge doing practically nothing which involved me staring at the family photos propped on the wall. In all the pics both Jason and Justin were present and in some, the man I guessed to be their father was present too. But non of them contained a woman.

That’s odd… I thought, taking a sit and grabbing the remote, flipping through channels.

Ok I can’t do this no more!

I stood up and followed Jason to the kitchen. As I stepped over the threshold, the aroma of the stuff he was cooking hit my nostrils.
“That smells delicious.” I said excitedly, startling Jason who was removing a tray of scones from the oven.

“Didn’t see nor hear you coming.” he said, smiling and placing the tray on the sink. “You should be in the lounge, dinner will be ready soon.”

“Am sorry but am getting bored sitting there alone so I thought of helping.”
“Am almost done.” Jason said, going back to the stove and checking on the noodles.
“I can still help.” I retorted. “What sort of lady sits around whilst a man does everything in the kitchen?”

“You know how to cook?” said Jason, his back facing me.

I found this question insulting but I decided to brush it aside.

“Of course.” I said at once. “Try me!”
Jason chuckled. “Next time.” he said, placing a number of serving pots on a tray. “You can help with the serving, maybe?”

“Sure!” I exclaimed, feeling useful. “Where should I begin from?”
After serving everything on the dining table, Jason and I took our seats. Opposite one another so that we faced each other.
“So,” I said, dishing out the nshima for Jason, “where’s everyone?”
Jason chuckled. “What do you mean everyone? It’s just me in the house.”
“No,” I gasped, “you can’t possibly live alone in this mansion. How about your brother? Friend? Any family?”

Jason’s smile faltered as I handed him his nshima with marinated brisket and fried vegetables. “Actually,” he sadly said, washing his hands, “Justin and I had a fight a week ago so he moved out. As for my dad, you know he’s out of the country.”
“And your mum?” I asked, dishing out for myself.

“She died.” said Jason flatly.
“Am sorry.” I said, tears welling in my eyes as I recalled the memories I and my late father had shared.

But am not here to sympathize with you, Jason. I don’t care whether your dad’s behind the land issue but I’ll get it back from you even if it’s the last thing I do! How I will, I really don’t know but I know I will.
“She died giving birth to Justin.” said Jason, snapping me from my thoughts. “I was only 3 years old by then so I don’t recall what sort of person she was.”
“Am so sorry, Jason. It wasn’t my intention to-”

“It’s fine.” he said, feigning a smile. “you’ve barely touched your food. You don’t like my cooking?”
“No it’s perfect!” I hurriedly said, stuffing a piece of brisket in my mouth. It was indeed delicious.
Jason and I talked about business related matters all through dinner. When we were done, I cleared the table.
“What would you like for dessert?” Jason asked, drying the plates that I was washing.
We were in the kitchen. Jason had insisted I leave the plates in the sink for his househelp to wash when she came for work the following morning. It all seemed inappriopriate so I insisted I do the dishes and he dries them and Jason reluctantly agreed. “Noodles and a milkshake or scones with a cup of coffee?” he added.
“I think scones and coffee will do.” I flatly said.

For dessert, Jason decided we have it by the pool area. We sat at a table which was opposite the pool and beyond was a garden that looked fresh even though it was night time. The weather was kind of chilly and I begun to shiver. What with my sleeveless and bear-back dress?

“Here,” said Jason softly, standing up and covering me with his jacket, “I can see you getting cold despite the hot coffee.”
I smiled. “Thanks.” I said as Jason took his seat. “Why did you invite me to dinner?”
Jason grinned. “As I said earlier. I just want to get to know you. Who knows? We might become business partners one day.”
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“What’s funny?” Jason asked, scowling.
“I doubt that would be possible.” I said, taking a bite from the delicious scone Jason had baked, “what with the feud between our parents?”

Of course I was just feigning my lack of interest in the partnership. Deep down, I was doing a happy dance. My plan was flowing well so far.

Brow furrowed, Jason said, “you said it, ‘our parents!’ The feud’s between them, not us! Besides, we can make great partners you know?”
“Yeah,” I said unconcerned, “maybe.”
Silence.

“Tell me about yourself.” Jason said after two minutes of silence.
“Me?”

Jason eyed me incredulously. “Cathy,” he said quietly, “maybe am boring you to death!”

“No.” I hurriedly said. “It’s just stress and all that. Well, there’s nothing much to tell. Am 24, CEO of Chilumba and Family Company Ltd.”
“That’s all?”
I nodded.

“Tell me about your boyfriend.” Jason said, sipping on his coffee.
I shrugged. “Nothing to tell cause I ain’t got one.”

“You’re bluffing?” said Jason, almost choking on his coffee.

“No am not. I’ve had my fair share of men and I can say all of them were lousy!” I said, sighing. “Am officially single.”
“Welcome to the club.” Jason said.
“What do you mean?”

“I’ve had my fair share of ladies and I can tell you they were all gold-diggers so I can say am officially single!”

I flashed a smile. “Seems we have a lot in common huh?” I said, raising my mug of coffee. “Let’s toast to that.”

Jason raised his too. “Cheers!”
I have to admit Jason was fun to be around cause after the dessert, he gave me a tour around the mansion and we talked about nothing in particular and laughed so much. I felt the urge to pee so I asked Jason where the powder room was and he took me inside the house. “Turn left, second door on your right.” he said, pointing down the hallway. “I’ll be in the lounge.”
“Thanks.”

And I walked down the hallway. After I was done using the powder room, I decided to snoop around. I got into the first unlocked room that I found.

My eyes danced with joy as they studied the room I had found myself into. Jason’s study!
There were photos of him propped against the wall, a desk and chair behind and lots of cabinets that contained files.

But where to begin searching for the title deeds? Maybe they’ll reveal something concerning the forgery?

I was about to take a step further when I heard someone clear their throat in the doorway. I froze.
“Cathy?” said Jason’s voice calmly, “what are you doing here?”
S--t! I’ve blown everything out of proportion. That too, on the first day! Am so useless! Sorry dad, I’ve failed you.
