What do you tell someone when they catch you snooping around their study on the first day they take you to their house?
You make up a lie!
“Cathy,” said Jason irritably, staring at me intently, “I asked you something!”
“Well,” I stammered, thinking of what lie to feed him, “I was leaving the powder room- and- heard some weird noises. The door wasn’t locked so I decided to check.”

Jason stared at me for a long time and said, “It must be mice. Will have to get rid of em’ asap!”

I heaved a sigh of relief. Just how easy it was to fool this guy. And this was also a good sign. Jason was so naive that it would be so easy to thwart him the land, at least that’s what I thought.
“Shall we leave?” said Jason in his deep manly voice.

I shook my head absent-mindedly as I walked towards him. He slipped his hand into mine as he ushered me away from the study.
“Did you have a good time?” Jason asked.
We were in his car. He was driving me home.
I flashed a genuine smile and said, “I’d have serious issues not to have enjoyed myself,” I paused, stealing glances at the handsome face of Jason’s, “you’re good company.” Too bad you got caught up in the web of your father’s schemes.

Jason grinned. “Glad to know you think of me as such,” he said, his gaze focused on the windshield, “Does your compliment mean you are ready to do business with me?”

I tucked my weave behind my ear. “I’ll think about it.” I said.

“Cool.”
On the rest of the way, Jason and I made small talk. Minutes later, he pulled up right in front of my iron wrought gate.
“Aren’t you gonna come in?” I quietly said, grabbing my purse from my laps. “Say hi to mum?”

Jason shook his head as he glanced at his wristwatch. “It’s quite late,” he said flatly. “I need to get home early. What with the hijacks going on in this city?”
“I understand,” I said, flashing Jason a smile and kissing him on his cheek, “Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”

I was about to leave the car when Jason held me by the hand and pulled me back. Without warning, he pressed me hard against my car seat and planted his amazingly soft lips on mine.

Confused, I impulsively reacted by pushing him off me and hitting him hard across the face.

“What did you do that for?” I shrieked.
In all honesty, I loved the kiss. But this guy and I had only met this morning for crying out loud. And now we were here, sharing a kiss? I hadn’t bargained for such. At least not this early in the game.

Jason recoiled, slumping back in his seat. “Am sorry,” he said, trying to hold my arms, “I really don’t know wh-”
“I don’t want to listen to your lousy excuses!” I said, more fiercely than intended.
“Cathy,” Jason began but I cut him short.
“Jason, what do you take me for?” I asked, staring at him intently, “A w---e?”
Jason shook his head vigorously. “Cathy, please don’t say that.” said Jason pleadingly, “I swear I hadn’t meant to do that. “You are so attractive that I ended up not being able to-”

I let out a laugh. “Wow, Jason, wow! Is this how you treat every attractive lady you come across?” I said, making sure there was a hint of sarcasm in my tone.
“Cathy,” Jason said curtly, his eyes boring into mine. I could see the sincerity in them, “That came out wrong. Let me just explain–”

I held up my right hand, warding him off.
“Goodnight, Mr. Banda.” I said, stretching the word ‘mister’ and getting out of the car. I bent down and said, “Consider your chance of ever doing business with me gone!”

“Cathy, Cathy! Cathy!”
But I was gone. Of course I didn’t mean my last sentence but I wasn’t gonna let Jason nor any man think I was easy to get. Besides, if it wasn’t for the land issue, I doubt I would have been acquainted with Jason in the first place.

“Hey, cousin!” said Nancy enthusiastically.
She was in the living room, watching one of her favorite T.V. Series.
