My office was a spacious lavish room. The air in it was excellent. I stood in front of the massive window that showed the beautiful city of Lusaka. Cars moving, motorists, pedestrians and the likes.

Nancy cleared her throat. She was seated behind my polished wooden desk. “You know I still don’t get this your plan.” she said, stuffing a piece of pizza in her mouth. “Don’t tell me you’ve fallen for that Jason dude.”

I snorted and walked to my desk where I sat on my comfortable leather chair. “Seriously?” I said, eyeing Nancy incredulously and grabbing a piece of pizza from the box. “How do you know me? Men are the last thing on my mind!”
“Yeah right. Preach water and drink wine huh?”

I frowned. “What is that supposed to mean?”

Nancy leaned forward. “Tell me you don’t find Jason handsome, sexy and all that.”
“Of course he’s handsome and-”
“There!” Nancy exclaimed, excitedly pointing at me. “You like him.”
“No I don’t.” I irritably said. “Men might not be on my mind but that doesn’t mean am homosexual!”

Nancy raised her hands in surrender. “You win.” she said, sipping her juice. “Now tell me about this plan of yours cause I honestly don’t understand a thing!”

That moment, I went back to the day my father died. He had called for me in his bedroom where he lay on a bed looking fragile.

“My princess!” exclaimed dad weakly, fighting to smile.

I sat on the bed and began patting his hands. “My lovely dad.” I said, tears welling in my eyes at the sight of his fragile form.
“Don’t cry.” said dad, raising a hand and wiping away the tears that had escaped my eyes. “You know am proud of you right?”
I vigorously nodded, the tears falling ever freely.

“I want you to take care of my company, I know you can do that and more.”
“Dad,” I said, placing my right palm on his cheek, “stop talking like this. You’ll be fine.”

Dad shook his head, tears welling in his eyes too. “Let’s not fool ourselves. I can feel my ancestors summoning me. I can literally hear the bells of death ringing.” said dad quietly. “But that’s not why I want you here.”

I couldn’t say anything as I began to sob.
“You know about the Banda case right?” dad asked.
I nodded.

“Good.” he said. “I don’t want them to acquire that land cause it rightfully belongs to us, the Chilumbas. It’s been in our family for over a century and I can’t afford to lose it.”
“Dad,” I said in between sobs, “if it’s been in our family then why hasn’t something been built on it?”
“That my dear is a long story. But no matter, when you beat the Bandas in court, make sure you put up a magnificent mall on that land.”
I nodded.

“I knew I’d count on you. Now, go fetch me your mum, I want to talk to her in private.”
I kissed dad on the forehead. “I love you.” I whispered.

“Love you too my princess.” he replied.
I left the room covering my mouth so as to muffle my sobs.

“Why are you crying?” Cynthia asked as soon as I emerged from dad’s room. “Is dad dead?”

“Cynthia!” snapped mum.
“Mum, dad wants to talk to you. Alone.”

That being said, I brushed the family doctor and Cynthia aside and rushed to my room. The next thing I heard were wails from dad’s room and I knew the inevitable had happened.
“Hello!” said Nancy loudly, snapping her fingers in my face. “I asked you something!”

“The less you know about my plan, the better.” I told her.
Silence.

“What’s my schedule for the afternoon?” I asked Nancy, sipping my juice.
Nancy sighed. “A meeting with the Chinese investors at 1:15 PM, in the conference room.”

“Cancel it.” I flatly said.
“A meeting with the Indian Loan-Sharks at 2:30 PM, Protea hotel.”

“Cancel it as well. In fact I don’t want anything to do with those buffoons.”
Nancy glared at me and said, “And a meeting with Mr Njobvu at 4 PM, Radison Blu hotel.”
I sighed. “Would have loved to attend that one but you cancel it too.”
“Are you insane?” said Nancy incredulously. “Do you want this guy to run to the Bandas or other real estate companies? Do you know how much we will-”
“Alright!” I snapped, getting my purse and standing. “I trust you, Nancy. You can handle that one.”

“Me?”

“Yes, you. Am going home now.” I said, heading for the door. “Oh yeah,” I turned back, “give Jason’s secretary a call and ask her to tell him to come pick me up at my place. You give her my address.”
“But-”
“Who’s the boss here?” I said, glaring at Nancy. “You or I?”
She stood up too. “It’s you.” she said.
“Good, then do as I say and don’t ask questions!”
