Chapter 422
Cassidy tiptoed around the boxes carefully - she was pretty sure a couple of them were full of kitchen stuff, which would rattle like hell if she bumped them in the dark. She made it by without causing an avalanche of glass and metal, so she let out a relieved sigh and continued across the kitchen, through into the hall and quietly slipped into the washroom.
If she'd needed to pee, it would have been easier and faster just to go in the ensuite at the other end of the house. Honestly, Terra waking up and hearing her peeing wouldn't have embarrassed her half as much as what she was doing now.
Cassidy didn't flip on the light, deciding just to let the little night light plugged into the socket near the sink be all she needed.
She looked at herself in the mirror and took a long, deep breath as she braced the heels of her palms against the sink.
It had been a good night. A fun night. Terra's friends here in Louisiana weren't bad people - maybe a little vapid, a little shallow, but not bad. Definitely fun to hang out with casually, though she doubted how deep they could get. Terra had looked cute as hell in that LBD she'd been wearing, and Cassidy felt like she'd straddled a good line between 'nice enough to go out' but not being flashy.
She liked being flashy, but only with Robbie there.
They'd had dinner and drinks at the same bar. Cass had been hit on a couple of times, but no one had been pushy or disrespectful, and she'd flashed her engagement ring with an apologetic smile. Terra had gotten more attention - that Cajun guy with the thick accent had been unfairly pretty for a man, and had made three different passes at Terra. She'd turned him down every time, even when her other friends were encouraging her to go for it.
Cass wouldn't have judged Terra as a person if the blonde had done it - she was technically single, days out of a breakup, and about to make a big life change and move across the country. Hooking up with that guy would have been the definition of No Strings Attached.
But she didn't do it. She barely even considered it.
Because she was in love with Robbie.
And Cassidy knew that was why she didn't do it, because Terra, drunk, had hugged Cassidy and whispered it like it was a big secret to her. To be fair, it was a big secret from Terra's friends, but not from Cass. And on the one hand, hearing Terra say that made her heart soar - for Terra, for Robbie, for everyone. But every soaring eagle has its talons, and those talons were the ache she felt.
"Why couldn't I have just wanted him?" she whispered to herself, glaring into her own eyes in the mirror.
She began to cry. Mostly silent, though she occasionally had to gasp in a breath while trying not to break into sobs.
Terra wasn't even dating Robbie, and she was being loyal to him. She didn't have the App to prove how much Robbie loved her back, and she was being loyal.
"I'm the worst," Cassidy murmured.
She had to do better. Had to.
And she was. Or she hoped she was. But that didn't change the things she'd done. She could picture so many of the women she'd seduced. Face after face buried between her thighs. Asses bent over for licking, for fingering, for fucking with any phallic object to hand. Girls and women who had known Robbie, had known about their relationship. Had known Cassidy was cheating on him.
That made it worse. The reputation she'd developed wasn't just about her; it was about him, too.
She could fix the fact that he hadn't had the sexual adventures she'd had - that was going great so far. The trip had been insanely more successful than she could have imagined. She could even give him an overload of love, more than she could ever express by herself, through his relationships with his new girlfriends and fuckbuddies. Now she could even help make sure that his best friend was also his lover - Dayana would be a shoo-in for the orgylationship. Cassidy just knew it.
But for all the things she could do to try and make up for the damage she'd done, the things she'd denied him or been unable to give him by herself, she couldn't fix the reputation she'd created around the two of them.
"Fuck you," she whispered harshly at herself.
"Cass?" Terra called, and the light in the hallway turned on.
Cassidy sniffed hard, wiping at her eyes to try and clear them, but she was caught. Terra appeared in the washroom doorway too quickly, and Cassidy hadn't actually closed it all the way, let alone locked it. Her eyes met Terra's in a panic, cheeks stained with tears, and after a moment of surprise, the look on Terra's face broke her.
She sobbed. And not in a pretty, cinematic way. It was an ugly sound, with an ugly expression to go with it. Something to match the way she felt about herself. And once that sound came out, once her lungs uttered it, she couldn't stop.
Maybe she blacked out for a moment, because she didn't remember Terra coming in and wrapping her arms around Cassidy, but that was what she realised was happening. Cassidy was clinging to Terra, hugging her tightly and sobbing into the shorter woman's neck, and Terra was rubbing her back and saying stuff. Cass had no idea what the fit little blonde was saying, but the tone was soothing and kind, and just made Cass feel worse while also feeling better.
Cassidy wasn't sure how long she cried. It was late, she was still tipsy from the bar, and Terra had been getting fed drinks so the short woman was quite possibly still fully drunk. That didn't seem to matter, though, as Terra was crying as well. Cassidy's tears became a little less self-hating and joined her in a mutual, empathetic cry instead.
When they'd worn themselves out, taking slow breaths and blowing their noses with tissues, Terra pulled Cassidy into another quick hug and kissed her on the cheek. "You don't need to run away and hide that," she said, holding Cassidy tightly. "I'm here for you as much as you're here for me."
"Thanks," Cassidy whimpered softly, hugging Terra back.
"Come on," the other woman said eventually, grabbing Cassidy's hand and pulling her out of the bathroom, down the hall and into the kitchen. The house she and JC had been renting together was a cute little single-floor bungalow that Cassidy had been super jealous of, even though technically the condo she and Robbie had was bigger by sheer footage with the upstairs and downstairs. Once they were in the kitchen, Terra made her sit at the table, and she went into the fridge and pulled out the back end of a loaf of bread and the last of the cheese she had, then she grabbed olive oil from the cupboard next to the fridge.
She was delayed for a moment when she went into a lower cupboard and found it empty, and had to go dig a frying pan back out of the boxes they'd packed earlier that day.
Still, in a little over five minutes, their cheeks were dry of tears, and she was sliding a crispy grilled cheese on a plate over to Cassidy, and sitting down with one of her own.
"Thanks," Cassidy mumbled through her first mouthful.
"M'welcome," Terra mumbled back.
She didn't ask, or pry, or try to do anything else. They just ate in silence; greasy melted cheese, crispy bread. The olive oil gave it a taste Cassidy didn't usually get from a grilled cheese made with butter, or from the ones Robbie sometimes made using the bacon drippings from a weekend breakfast.
Terra got up, grabbed a couple of glasses, then pulled the milk jug out and poured two full glasses.
"No heartburn," she said as she put on in front of Cassidy.
"Well, less heartburn," Cassidy grinned a little, thankful for the drink. They both drained them, and Cassidy chuckled at the milk moustache on Terra's lip before the blonde wiped it away with a paper napkin, then reached over and wiped one off of Cassidy as well.
"Come on," Terra said, standing up and offering Cass her hand. Cassidy took it, and Terra pulled her into another quick hug before stepping back and flipping off the kitchen light. "We're spooning, and cuddling, and maybe crying some more," she said. "But I'm calling Big Spoon because I don't want to wake up with your big bisexual lady boner poking me in the butt."
That made Cassidy snort as she was led back through the house in the dark, and this time she bumped into the boxes she'd so carefully slipped past on the way out. They'd already been sleeping in the same bed, since Terra and JC hadn't had a guest room and their couch was sitting directly under the front bay window with no blinds - they just hadn't been snuggling or cuddling.
This time, Terra made Cass climb under the covers, then jumped under as well and hugged Cassidy from behind, pressing her cheek to the back of her friend's neck. It was comfortable and warm, and Cassidy wasn't sure she could do this. It wasn't cheating, it wasn't sexual in any way really, and she doubted that Robbie would feel any sort of way about it except concerned that they'd both been feeling so shitty.
But on the nightstand, plugged into her charger, was her phone. With the App.
Terra was straight, but that hadn't stopped Cassidy in the past. Some girls were completely straight, but others weren't as straight as they said. Or were happy to try something once or twice, and go back to being straight.
"Cass," Terra murmured in the dark.
"Yeah, Terra?" Cass asked.
"I know that you feel like a cunt for what you did to Robbie, but I'm kinda glad you did it," Terra said softly. "Because there's no way what's happened would have happened if you hadn't done things the way you did. It was a shitty thing to do, yeah, but... I love you, babe."
"I love you too," Cassidy said, squeezing her eyes closed but still feeling the tears starting to well up again.
"You can cry as much as you want to," Terra said, her voice a little hoarse. "I'm here for you, just like you're here for me." She hugged Cassidy a little tighter.
They both cried again, and sleep didn't come again until much later than they would have liked.
