The Poor Pastor, Episode 2

“You can deny it all you want, but we already know the truth. You are the leader of that robbery gang. Your partners escaped and left you behind. Now you will face the consequences,” one of the police officers said as they pushed Pastor Uche into the cell.

Pastor Uche spent the entire night in the police station. From the moment he was brought in, he was treated like a dangerous criminal. The officers did not listen to his explanation. They did not ask for proper details. They had already made up their minds about him. To them, he was not a pastor. He was a robber who had been caught at the scene of a crime with a gun in his hand.

Inside the station, the accusations continued.

“You think we don’t know your type? You people hide under religion to do evil. You robbed a bank and killed one of your own men so that you can escape suspicion.

Unfortunately for you, you were caught red-handed. Now you will answer for everything,” another officer said.

Pastor Uche tried to defend himself.

“Officer, please listen to me. I am telling you the truth. I went to the bank to fix my account. I am not part of any robbery. I only stopped the thief because he was threatening people. Please, ask the people in the bank. They saw everything clearly,” Pastor Uche said.

But the officers laughed.

“You will explain everything in court. That is where all criminals go to tell their stories,” one of them replied.

They locked him in a separate cell, away from other detainees. They believed he was too dangerous to be kept with others because they thought he was the leader of the robbery gang. The small room was cold and quiet. There was no comfort, no support, and no one to talk to.

Pastor Uche sat alone in that dark space, his mind filled with confusion and pain. That was how Pastor Uche got into trouble.

By the next morning, the police had already prepared a case against him. They wrote their reports and concluded that he would be charged to court for armed robbery, stealing, and illegal possession of firearms. To them, the matter was already settled.

Then something else happened. The police invited journalists. They wanted to make the case public and show that they had captured a dangerous criminal. Cameras were brought in. Reporters gathered. Pastor Uche was brought out in handcuffs and made to stand before the press.

“Here is the suspect we arrested yesterday during a bank robbery operation. He is believed to be the leader of the gang. His accomplices escaped, but we were able to capture him with a weapon. He will be charged to court,” one of the officers said proudly.

Pastor Uche tried to speak.

“I am not a robber. I am a pastor. Please, listen to me. I only stopped—” But they shut him up quickly.

“Keep quiet! Nobody asked you to speak!” an officer barked. The cameras continued flashing. Within a short time, his face was everywhere. It was on television. It was in newspapers. It spread across the community like wildfire. People who knew him could not believe what they were seeing. Members of his church gathered in small groups, discussing the shocking news.

“This cannot be true. Pastor Uche cannot be a robber. That man has been preaching to us for years. He has always been honest. I don’t believe this story,” one member said.

Another person shook his head slowly. “We don’t really know people. Maybe he was pretending all along. How can a pastor be caught with a gun inside a bank if he is innocent?”

The church became divided. Some members stood by him and believed he was innocent. Others began to doubt him. Little by little, people started leaving the church. Attendance dropped. Trust was broken.

While all this was happening outside, Pastor Uche remained in the police cell. He sat alone, thinking about everything. Tears rolled down his face.

“God, why is this happening to me? I have served you faithfully for years. I have refused to deceive people. I have refused to take what does not belong to me. Why am I now being called a robber?” he said as he wept quietly.

Later that day, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) sent for him. Pastor Uche was brought out of the cell and taken into the officer’s office. The DPO looked at him carefully and leaned back in his chair.

“Pastor, I have heard your story, and I understand what you are trying to say. But let me tell you something. This case is serious. Armed robbery is not a small offense. If we charge you to court, you may not come out anytime soon. In fact, you could spend many years in prison,” the DPO said.

“Sir, I am innocent. I did not rob the bank. I only stopped one of the thieves. Please, help me. I don’t deserve to be here.”

The DPO smiled slightly and spoke in a lower tone.

“Well, there is a way things can be handled quietly. If you can arrange one million naira, we can make this case disappear. You will go home, and nobody will trouble you again. But if you cannot provide that money, then prepare yourself for court.”
