The Poor Pastor, Episode 1
“My officer, I am not a robber. I am a pastor. I only stopped the thief because I wanted to save lives. Please listen to me,” Pastor Uche said as the police dragged him away. He was arrested and accused of stealing and his reputation as a pastor is on the line. He is innocent, but who will believe him?
Pastor Uche was not just an ordinary man. He was a man many people in the community knew very well. For more than five years, he had been preaching the word of God faithfully. He was not like other pastors who collected money from people by force or preached false promises just to enrich themselves.
Pastor Uche had always been different. He was poor, yes, but he was content with what he had. He believed that serving God was not about making money but about living a righteous life and helping others. Because of this, many people respected him deeply. Even those who did not attend his church still spoke well about him because they knew he was an honest man.
Despite all his years of service, Pastor Uche struggled financially. His church was small, and the members were not rich. Sometimes, he even used the little money he had to support people who were in need. There were days when he and his family had very little to eat, but he never complained. He always said, “God will provide in His own time. My duty is to remain faithful and not compromise the truth for money.”
That was the kind of man he was. One morning, Pastor Uche decided to go to the bank. He had been having issues with his account, and he wanted to fix it. It was something small but very important to him because that account was where he kept the little money he managed to save over time. He dressed simply as usual and made his way to the bank, not knowing that something terrible was about to happen.
When he arrived at the bank, everything looked normal. People were sitting down, waiting for their turn. Some were filling forms, while others were talking quietly. Pastor Uche greeted a few people who recognized him and then took a seat, waiting patiently for his number to be called. He was calm, as always, and even used the time to read his Bible quietly.
Suddenly, everything changed. Armed robbers stormed into the bank.
“Everybody lie down! Nobody should move! If you try anything funny, you will die here today!” one of the robbers shouted loudly.
Within seconds, the entire bank was thrown into chaos. People started screaming. Some dropped to the floor immediately. Others froze in fear. The sound of panic filled the air. The robbers moved quickly, waving their guns and threatening everyone.
“Face the ground! Don’t look at us! If anybody raises their head, we will shoot!” another robber shouted.
Pastor Uche slowly lay on the ground like everyone else, but his heart was steady. While others were shaking with fear, he remained calm. He had seen many difficult situations in life, and he believed that fear would not solve anything. He prayed silently in his heart.
The robbers divided themselves. Some of them rushed toward the vault to collect money, while one of them stayed behind in the banking hall to monitor everyone and make sure no one moved.
That was when Pastor Uche noticed something.
The robber who stayed behind was not paying full attention. His focus was shifting, and he seemed distracted by the activities happening near the vault. Pastor Uche slowly lifted his head just a little and observed him carefully.
“This may be the only chance,” Pastor Uche said quietly.
Without making noise, Pastor Uche began to crawl slowly behind one of the tables. His movement was careful and calculated. Everyone else was too afraid to even breathe properly, but Pastor Uche was thinking differently.
When he got close enough, he acted.
He suddenly grabbed the robber from behind.
The robber was shocked and struggled immediately, but Pastor Uche held him firmly.
“Drop the gun!” Pastor Uche said as he struggled with him.
The robber tried to resist, but Pastor Uche was determined. After a brief struggle, he overpowered the robber, collected the gun from him, and in the heat of the moment, he pulled the triigger. The gunnshot echoed through the bank. The robber fell to the ground and died. Everything went silent for a moment. People were shocked.
No one expected that the quiet pastor lying on the ground would suddenly turn into someone who could disarm an armed robber. Before anyone could even react properly, the sound of sirens filled the air. The police had arrived.
The remaining robbers who were inside the vault heard the commotion and quickly escaped through the back door before the police could reach them.
The police officers rushed into the banking hall with their guns raised.
“Everybody stay where you are! Drop your weapons!” one of the officers shouted. Pastor Uche stood there, still holding the gun he had taken from the robber. Before he could explain anything, the police surrounded him immediately.
“Drop that gun now!” another officer shouted.
Pastor Uche dropped the gun slowly and raised his hands.
“I am not a robber. I only stopped him. He was one of the thieves. I disarmed him to save everyone here,” Pastor Uche said quickly. But the officers did not listen.
“You think we are fools? So you are the one left behind while your gang escaped? You will explain everything at the station,” one of them said.
They moved toward him, handcuffed him, and treated him like a criminal.
“Officer, please listen to me. I am a pastor. My name is Pastor Uche. I came here to fix my bank account. I am not part of any robbery. Please ask the people here, they saw everything,” he said desperately. But the police were not interested in hearing his explanation.
“Save your story for the station,” one officer said as they dragged him away.
As Pastor Uche was taken out of the bank in handcuffs, the same people who respected him stood there in shock, unable to speak. Within minutes, the man who came to the bank to solve a small problem had become a suspect in a robbery case. And no one was ready to listen to him.
