The Loyalty Test

The sun was very bright on that Saturday morning. It was the kind of morning that should make anyone feel happy. The light came through the large windows of the house and made the white walls look like they were glowing. Outside the window, there was a garden that Nia and Andre had worked on together for a long time. It was a garden full of roses. There were red roses that looked like velvet. There were yellow roses that looked like little pieces of the sun. There were also white roses that looked as pure as new snow. Usually, looking at these flowers made Nia feel very peaceful. She loved to see the bees flying from one petal to another. She loved the way the wind made the flowers dance. But today, Nia did not feel peaceful at all. Even though the sun was warm on her skin, she felt a cold shiver deep inside her heart.

She sat on the soft blue sofa and watched her husband, Andre. He was sitting across the room in his favorite wooden chair. Andre was looking at his phone and he was laughing. It was a loud and honest laugh. It was the kind of laugh that usually made Nia smile without even thinking about it. Andre was a very handsome man with a kind face. When he laughed, his eyes would crinkle at the corners. He looked like a man who did not have a single worry in the whole world. But as Nia watched him laugh at a joke on his screen, she felt a pinch of pain. She began to wonder who he was talking to. She began to wonder if he was laughing because of something a friend said or if it was something else. A dark thought started to grow in her mind.

They lived in this beautiful house and they had a good life. They had everything they needed to be happy. But Nia could not stop the questions from coming. She kept thinking to herself, "Is Andre truly happy with me?" This question led to another one. "Would he still love me if a prettier woman came along?" Then she thought, "What if a woman who is kinder and smarter than me started talking to him?" These thoughts were like small weeds in a garden. If you do not pull a weed out early, it will grow very fast. It will spread its roots and start to take over the beautiful flowers. That is exactly what was happening to Nia. Her doubt was a weed that was growing over all her happy memories. It was covering up the memory of their wedding day. It was covering up the memory of their first date. All she could see now was the fear that Andre might not be loyal.

Nia loved Andre very much. He was her best friend and her partner. But she did not know how to just sit down and talk to him. She was afraid that if she asked him for reassurance, he would think she was being silly. She was afraid he would get angry or feel like she did not trust him. Instead of being brave and using her words, Nia decided to do something else. She decided to create a test. She wanted to know for sure if his heart was as strong as a big rock that never moves. She wanted to know if his love was solid or if it was as soft as sand that washes away when the ocean waves hit it. She thought that a test was the only way to be 100 percent sure.

Nia waited until Andre went into the kitchen to get some water. Then she took her own phone and went into the bedroom. She sat on the edge of the bed and started searching online. She was looking for someone who could help her with her plan. After a while, she found a woman named Kate. Kate was a woman who was known for being very charming and very pretty. She was a person who knew how to talk to people and make them feel special. Nia looked at Kate’s profile and felt a mix of jealousy and hope. She thought that if Andre could stay loyal while talking to someone as charming as Kate, then she would never have to worry again.

Nia took a deep breath and called the number she found. Her hands were shaking a little bit as she held the phone to her ear. When the call went through, a woman answered. It was Kate. Nia explained her secret plan. She told Kate that she wanted her to pretend to be a stranger and reach out to Andre. "I want you to befriend my husband," Nia said. "I want to see if he stays true to me when another lady is being very nice to him." Nia expected Kate to sound friendly or maybe even a little bit sorry for her. But Kate’s voice was not what she expected at all. Kate had a voice that was sharp and cold. It sounded like ice cracking in the winter. Kate agreed to do it, but she did not say much else. She just said she would start the test soon.

As soon as Nia hung up the phone, she felt a sudden rush of fear. It was a heavy feeling in her stomach. It felt like she had just dropped a glass and watched it break into a thousand pieces. She realized that she had just opened a door that she might not be able to close again. She had invited a stranger into her marriage. She had started a game that had very high stakes. Nia walked back into the living room and saw Andre. He was busy making dinner now. He was in the kitchen chopping vegetables and humming a happy tune. He was even singing a little song about how much he liked the meal he was making. He looked so innocent and so kind.

Nia watched him and felt a tear start to form in her eye. She wondered if she was making the biggest mistake of her life. She wondered if she was destroying her own happiness because of a fear that might not even be real. She wanted to run to him and tell him everything. She wanted to tell him about the phone call and about Kate. But she felt stuck. She felt like she had to know the truth. She stood there in the middle of the room, feeling like a ghost in her own home. The house was still beautiful and the roses were still blooming, but everything felt different now. The air felt thick and hard to breathe.

Andre looked up and saw her standing there. "Are you okay, Nia?" he asked with a big smile. "Dinner is almost ready. I am making your favorite pasta." His voice was full of love. It was the same voice he always used when he spoke to her. He did not know that his life was about to change. He did not know that his wife had set a trap for him. Nia tried to smile back, but her face felt stiff. "I am fine," she lied. She hated lying to him, but she felt she had gone too far to turn back now. She sat down at the table and watched him work. Every time he smiled at her, she felt a pang of guilt.

The evening went on slowly. They ate dinner together and talked about small things. Andre talked about his day at work and about the new flowers he wanted to plant in the garden next week. Nia tried to listen, but her ears were waiting for something else. She was waiting for the sound of a notification on Andre’s phone. She was waiting for the moment Kate would make her first move. Every time Andre’s phone lit up on the table, Nia’s heart would jump. But it was always just a message from his brother or a news update. The wait was making her feel very nervous. She felt like she was sitting on a ticking clock.

As the sun went down, the house became dark. Andre turned on the lamps, creating a warm and cozy glow. He sat down next to Nia on the sofa and put his arm around her. "I love our life together," he whispered. "I feel like the luckiest man in the world." Nia wanted to scream. She wanted to tell him that she was not as perfect as he thought. She wanted to tell him that she was a woman who was filled with doubt. But she just leaned her head on his shoulder and stayed quiet. She kept thinking about Kate’s cold voice. She wondered how Kate would try to talk to him. Would she send a text? Would she call?

Suddenly, the silence of the evening was broken. It was not a phone notification. It was a loud and clear sound that echoed through the whole house. The doorbell rang. Nia froze. Her heart started to beat so fast it felt like a drum. It was late for a visitor. They were not expecting anyone. Andre looked confused. "Who could that be at this hour?" he asked. He stood up and walked toward the front door. Nia followed him, her legs feeling like they were made of lead. She knew that this was it. The test was starting. The game had finally begun. As Andre reached for the doorknob, Nia held her breath. She realized that once that door opened, her life would never be the same again.

She looked at the back of Andre’s head and felt a wave of sadness. She had wanted to know if he was a rock or sand, but now she was just afraid of losing him. She was afraid that by testing his loyalty, she was proving that she was the one who was not loyal to their trust. The door creaked as Andre opened it. The cool night air rushed in, bringing the scent of the roses from the garden. Nia stood in the shadows, her eyes wide as she looked to see who was standing on the other side. Everything felt like it was moving in slow motion. This was the moment of no return. This was the start of the loyalty test.

Nia watched as Andre opened the door wide. A woman was standing there. The light from the hallway hit her face. She was even more beautiful than her pictures online. She had a smile that looked friendly, but Nia remembered the coldness in her voice. The woman looked at Andre and then she looked past him to where Nia was standing. There was a look in her eyes that Nia could not understand. It was a look of power. Andre stood there, looking surprised. He did not know who this woman was, or at least that is what Nia hoped. The woman took a step forward, and the silence in the room felt like it was going to break.

Nia felt her heart sink. She had started this because she wanted peace of mind, but all she felt was a deep sense of dread. She had wanted to protect her heart, but she had ended up putting it in danger. She realized that trust is a very fragile thing. It is like a beautiful rose. It takes a long time to grow, but it can be crushed in just a second. As the woman began to speak, Nia realized that the truth she was looking for might be more than she could handle. She had wanted to see if Andre would be strong, but she had forgotten to check if she was strong enough to watch the test happen. The game was no longer a plan in her head. It was now a reality standing in her doorway.

Do you think Nia was right to test Andre's loyalty instead of talking to him about her fears?

If you were in Andre's position and a beautiful stranger appeared at your door, how would you react?

Do you think Nia's plan will bring her the peace she is looking for, or will it destroy her marriage?

What do you think Kate's true intentions are after hearing her "cold and sharp" voice on the phone?
