The First Lady Episode Eight
Kehinde was taken straight to the police station from the First Lady's secret house. She was wondering why she was arrested. She wept deeply while in detention. She asked the police to explain to her what her crime was but they didn't pay her any attention. She was just thrown into the cell and locked up like a criminal.
The police cell where Leke's wife was detained was so dirty such that the air smells of urine and 'poo poo' which were left in open buckets. The floor was rough and there was no bed. She will have to sleep on the smelly floor when she wants to rest.
"Is this where I will stay? What have I done to deserve this kind of cell? I only visited the first lady to plead with her not to sack my husband. What is wrong with that? Is that a crime? just want the best for my husband and my family. I don't think I have committed any crimes. Why did the police arrest me? Why did they throw me into this kind of place? This is very unfair." Leke's wife lamented tearfully, but there was no one to answer her questions. There was no one to tell her the crime she committed.
Throughout that day, the police did not talk to Kehinde. No one came to give her food, and she slept hungry in the night. In fact, she did not sleep at all because the police cell was not comfortable. Apart from smelling so badly, the floor was so rough like concrete. Sleep did not near her eyes. She would sit for a while and the lie down for a while. It was a very difficult situation for her. She felt like using her hands to tear the night so that she could see daylight because the police cell was so dark and scary. She cried throughout the night.
"If I had known, I would not have gone to the First Lady's house. I would have listened to my husband who wanted us to pack and leave. But I just felt like we should not miss the opportunity to change our lives positively through the job he got. I just wanted my family to have money and to be happy. Now, I have ended up in a dungeon. I'm sure when I get out of this place, I will fall sick." Leke's wife kept talking to herself until daybreak.
When she finally saw sunlight stream into the police cell, she was so happy. At about 8am, the policeman in charge of her cell came around to check on her.
"Don't you have a family? No one has come for you since you were arrested. Are you married?" The policeman asked. Kehinde was happy that at least, someone was talking to her for the first time since she was brought to the station.
"I'm a married woman but I'm not sure my husband is aware that I'm here. I think he has not been told about my detention, that's why he has not come for me." Kehinde tells the policeman.
"I brought bread and Fanta for you. I know you have not eaten since yesterday. But you have to make efforts to reach your family. Do you have your husband's phone number? Let me me help you to call him." The policeman said.
"No! I don't have the phone number offhand. Unfortunately, I didn't come out with my phone on the day I was arrested. I forgot to put my phone in my handbag. I just rushed out to visit the First Lady." Kehinde said. The policeman was surprised that a wife cannot remember her husband's phone number.
"How can you not know your husband's phone number offhand? Now that you are in detention, how are you going to reach him?" The policeman said as he leaves the cell after giving Kehinde the bread and soft drinks. She ate the bread aggressively and gulped the bottle of Fanta at a go. She was eating for the first time in 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Leke had started looking for his wife since the previous day. When Kehinde was going out, she did not tell Leke where she was going to. This was why it was initially difficult for him to locate her. He had searched everywhere in the neighborhood but he failed to find his wife. He was so worried.
"Where could she be at this time? Was she kidnapped? But the driver has not returned also. Why did the driver not return to my house as usual? Were they kidnapped together? Where can I find my wife? I can't afford to lose her. My son can't afford to be motherless at such a tender age." Leke said in his heart that morning.
After much thoughts, he decided to pay a visit to the First Lady's secret house. He boarded a taxi to the house. When he got there, the First Lady was sitting in the living room, watching television.
"You are welcome Leke. Always glad to see you. Have you finally made up your mind to give me what I want? I'm glad you have accepted my offer. Can we go to the bedroom now?" The First Lady asked Leke excitedly.
"I'm not here to give you anything. I'm looking for my wife who has been missing now for 24 hours. Any chance she might be here? She didn't tell me where she was going. Did she come here?" Leke asked. The First Lady paused a little before speaking. It was like she did not want to talk to Leke about his wife.
"Please, tell me. Is my wife here? Did you see her? Please, if she is here, let her know I have been looking for her. Even my son is worried." Leke said after he saw that the First Lady did not want to talk.
"Yes! Your wife was here yesterday. I got her arrested because she stole my jewelry which is worth N20K million. The jewelry was found in her bag. I called the police to arrest her. For your information, she will not be released until you give me what I want. Once you give me bedroom food, I will release her. But I will send her to jail if you continue to turn me down." The First Lady said.
