Pregnancy in Ward 10, Episode Ten

"We have decided to sack you." Dr Mark tells Roland as soon as he got to work that morning. After Roland was reported to the hospital by Nikki, the management held an emergency meeting and took the decision to relive him of his appointment with immediate effect.

"Yes, you have committed a heinous crime against Nikki and it goes against the code of employment spelt out in the contract you signed with the hospital when you were employed to work here. So, your appointment has been terminated and you are required never to be seen 200 meters close to the facility. In fact, we are inviting the police to get you arrested for the crimes you have committed." Dr Mark said angrily. He was highly disappointed in Roland who he knew to have been an honest and a hardworking staff of the hospital.

"The events of the past few weeks have actually taught us a serious lesson. From now henceforth, we will mount CCTV cameras in hospital wards to monitor the activities of everyone who enters and exits the wards. We are going to put all measures in place to make sure that this kind of thing never happens again." Dr Mark said. He asked Roland to leave his presence.

Roland did not say anything to defend himself in the presence of Dr Mark. In fact, he felt that he did not owe him explanations. He felt that the explanation he gave to Nikki was enough. He took his bags and exited the hospital premises. When he got home, he did not see Nikki. She had gone to her husband's house to see him. She was hoping to have a conversation with her husband, so that he could accept her back into the house.

"I have found the man who got me pregnant." Nikki tells her husband as soon as she entered the living room. Duke was sipping red with from a glass cup. He appeared uninterested in whatever it was that brought Nikki back to his house.

"I said I have found the man who touched me without permission and got me pregnant." Nikki repeated what she said earlier when her husband paid her no attention. Duke sipped his wine again and concentrated on what he was watching on the TV as if he did not see or hear Nikki at all.

"Are you not hearing me? You said I must find the man who got me pregnant and I'm here to tell you who did it. Why are you not talking to me?" Nikki asked out of serious frustration. She was scared because of the silent treatment Duke was giving her.

"Please, talk to me. Are you not interested in knowing the person who got me pregnant again?" Nikki asked with a loud voice.

"Why are you shouting like a mad dog? What makes you think I'm interested in knowing the person who touched my wife? Who told you I want to know? Do you want me to throw a party because you have found the man who touched you? You must be a joker. When you have stayed to your satisfaction, you can take yourself back to the man and continue living with him because as it stands right now, I'm done with you." Duke said.

"It is the hospital cleaner who got me pregnant. I did nothing wrong because I did not permit him to do it. He touched me without permission when I was hospitalized there and it resulted into pregnancy. I have even reported him to the hospital management. I don't think I should be blamed for something I don't have control over.

I was helpless and he took advantage of me. It is wrong that you are heaping the blame on me as if I cheated on you intentionally." Nikki said.

"Cheating is cheating, weather it was intentional or not. There is no mistake in such things. You did it intentionally, and thank God for the pregnancy, because without it, I would never have found out that you cheated on me." Duke said with a sarcastic laughter. At that time, a young lady who looks very beautiful entered the living room. Nikki was alarmed when she saw the new girl. The new girl approached Duke, hugged him passionately and sat on his laps.

"You already have a new girl? I knew it! This pregnancy of a thing was not the real reason you pushed me away." Nikki said with tears in her eyes.

"Yes of course! I cannot stay without a woman when I saw that you have turned your body into a community property. I have to find myself a respectable damsel. Thank God I have found a good woman who is better than you in all ramifications. Please, like I said earlier, when you have stayed to your satisfaction, you can leave my house and go back to the man who got you pregnant." Duke said while still holding on to the new girl.

Nikki was ashamed. She decided not to make trouble, so she left the room silently. When she got outside, she continued to cry while standing close to the door. She overheard the new girl telling Duke something.

"She should have died in the hospital. In fact, you shouldn't have taken her to the hospital after beating her that night. We agreed that you should beat her until she is unconscious and then don't take her to the hospital. But you took her to the hospital and she survived it. Now that that she is still alive, how are you going to marry me?" The new giri asked Duke, without knowing that Nikki was hearing them.

"I tried my best. You know that night, she was shouting too much and our neighbours came. She was already unconscious when they entered and I lied to them that she had a domestic accident. They were the ones who rushed her to the hospital. I had to pretend and follow them so that they will not suspect me. Please, don't be angry. Even in the hospital, I still tried to eliminate her, but I was nearly caught by the cleaner. But the pregnancy has saved us all the stress. Now, I have the right to chase her away and marry you." Roland told the new girl. Nikki was shocked by the things she was hearing.

Quickly, her brain remembered some things. She was able to remember a many moments her husband beat her.

Everything she remembered confirmed what Roland told her and the fact that she did not go to the hospital because she had a road accident. Her husband's beating put her in that situation for six months.

"I remember everything now. My husband is a wife beater and he wanted me out of the house. He wanted me dead. I have to go and apologise to Roland." Nikki said as she left Duke's premises.
