{
UGLY NIGHTMARE }

The room was bleak, cold, and completely dark. It was the most piercing darkness ever, it was not merely the darkness that came out because of the absence of light or because it was late at night, it was much more sinister and frightening. Just like every night.

A young girl of ten years old with short blonde hair hid under a small bed, suppressing her cries with her hand clasped over her mouth. Her eyes were reddened and puffy with tears. Her face was no different. She has been crying and yet still crying for the past three hours.

How long has she been hiding under this bed? She can’t even remember. She was scared. Not for herself but rather for her mother out there in the living room, fighting to survive the next beating from a man who once claimed to love her.

The girl squee-zed her eyes shut as more fresh tears streamed down her face when she heard things breaking and crashing in the living room. She also heard screams of pain and angry grunt. The little girl felt the urge to run out there and protect her mother from that ruthless monsters.

However, her mother made her promise not to come out of her hiding spot. The bastard will hurt her as well if he sights her and that was the last thing her mother wanted.

More crashes and slams sounded from the living room, making the girl let out a soft yelp, pressing her palm harder over her mouth. Who would come to their rescue? Will her mother end up dying? What was going to happen now after this? Questions ran throu-ghher head but there was no one to give her answers or rea-ssurance. If being scared was a person, it would definitely be her.

Just when she thought things were already worse, she was proved wrong when she heard heavy footsteps and her mother’s quiet pleading for him to stop. They were coming here. Was it going to be her turn now?

She wished the ground will open up and swallow her whole without leaving anything left of her but prayers or wishes like this never happens. Suddenly, the door to her room flung open and she sighted the black boot of the man, walking towards the bed as if he knew she was hiding under there. Or maybe he does know.

“Please leave her.” Her mother begged, kneeling before the monster in tears. The woman had open wounds all over her face and body. Her blonde hair was scattered and covered half part of her eyes. However, she didn’t care about her current state or the fire of pain she was going throu-ghfrom the fresh cuts over herself. All she cared about at that point was her innocent daughter who doesn’t deserve to go throu-ghthis hell or even witness it at all.

“Shut up.” He roared, slapping her very ha-rd across the face. “Let out one more word and kis-s the earth goodbye.”

“Kill me if you want but please don’t touch my daughter. I beg of you.”

He ignored her and pushed the bed aside, revealing the little girl who quickly ran into her mother’s arms, crying out loud.

The woman wrapped her arms around her child, protectively. “Don’t come any close. Leave us alone.”

He snickered, stalking towards them like a predator, aiming for its prey. “Hello, my child. Do you want to know what Daddy has in sto-re for you?” He let out a sly smirk, grabbing hold of the girl’s wrist.

“No, no. Please don’t hurt her. Please leave her alone. Don’t do this.”

He paid no attention to the woman and started dragging the girl towards the open door.

“Mummy!” The girl cried, stretching her free hand for her mother to reach out to her and pull away from the clutches of the bastard.

Her mother forced herself up and attempted to hit the man with a chair but he skillfully dodged the hit and punched her right in the face which knocked her off and she fell unconscious on the floor.

“No. Mummy!”

He successfully pulled her out of the room and slammed the door shut, locking her mother inside the room so she wouldn’t come to save her when she gets back consciousness.

That was when the little girl realized that no one was going to save her from his clutches tonight. No one. Not her mother. Not even her fate.

They entered another dark room and the sound of the door jamming closed felt like the world has been shut out of her reach.

He rou-ghly pushed her to the floor and tilted his head to the side, enjoying how she was afraid of him. “Do you know what I am going to do to you?”

“Please don’t hurt me. Please…” She cried.

“I am not going to hurt you, honey. Daddy will never do that to you.” He grabbed a screwdriver from a table she didn’t notice until now. “Stop crying now, will ya? This is one thing I hate your mother for. She is so weak and pathetic. Being weak like her will get you nowhere, darling. I don’t want that for you which is why…” He lowered himself to her level, ripping off her shirt from her body. “I am going to make you strong and fierce like me. And I can only achieve that for you after inflicting pains and scars on your body. Tears are a form of weakness. The day you stop crying or showing displea-sure while I impose the bruises on you…will be the day I stop torturing you. What do you say about that, baby?”

She had no say in this. He wasn’t asking because he wanted to hear her opinion but rather because he wanted to make sure she understood what he was saying. Which she doesn’t.

This was her hell…

Abigail snapped her eyes open and she was met with complete darkness, she could barely breathe. Sweat lingered all over her body, soaking her pillow. She quickly reached out to the lamp by her bed and ignite it, looking around her large bedroom as if expecting someone to reveal himself from the dark corners but nothing like that happened.

She checked the time on her phone and it reads; 2:37 am.

This wasn’t a new thing for Abby. She always has this nightmare of her childhood whenever she was stressed, scared, or feeling weak. And yesterday, she felt stressed over what happened at work.

She let out a de-ep breath, running her fingers throu-ghher blonde hair while li-cking her li-ps. This was a part of her life she really wanted to bury and get rid of. But how could she forget them when the scars on her back, hips, and shoulders are a constant reminder of the tortures that bastard put her throu-ghall in the name of making her strong and fierce? He is a monster and she hated him with so much pa-ssion.

Abby felt her throat itchy as she thirsts for water. She reached out for her water bottle only to find it empty. She was tempted to scream in frustration and anger but it was too early and she didn’t want to disturb Emma whose bedroom was directly facing hers.

She sluggishly got out of bed and went out of her room to get herself water to drink.

By the time she returned, she was feeling much better compared to how she was when she woke up from the nightmare. She let out a de-ep breath and lay on the floor, sliding under her bed after dropping the bottle of water on the table beside her bed and turning off the lamp.

She wished it was morning already because the thought of going back to sleep scares the shit out of her.

Abby inhaled and exhaled a few times, closing her eyes. This was the only way she can go back to sleep. Lying under the bed makes her feel protected and secure from that bastard. It was the only way she can escape her hell.

The sound of the birds chirping woke Abby up from her slumber. She yawned loudly and tried to stretch her body only to remember that she was still under her bed.

She gro-aned lowly and pushed herself out of the bed, standing up to her feet. She stretched her body and yawned again with her eyes closed. However, just as she opened her eyes once again, her heart almost jumped out of her body when she unexpectedly saw Emma sitting right on her bed, with her arms crossed and her li-ps pursed.

“fuc-k ing shit. What the hell, Emma? You scared me.” She hissed, placing her palm over her chest to make her point clear. “Why didn’t you wake me up when you came in?”

“How could I wake you up when I couldn’t even find you on your bed?” Emma asked.

“Oh. Yeah. I was…”

“You had the nightmare, didn’t you?” She cut her off.

Abby gulped audibly and started fidgeting with her fingers. Her silence was enough answer to Emma.

“Oh, God. Why didn’t you call out to me?” Emma quickly got up to her feet, giving her friend a sad look.

“I didn’t want to disturb you with my problems, Em. Besides, I got everything under control. Especially my sanity.”

“By sleeping under the bed? Is that what you mean by getting your sanity in control?” She sighed. “I know how scary your childhood past is, Abby. I didn’t go throu-ghit with you but the story you told, is enough for me to visualize it and see how heartbreaking and frightening it must have been for you. But you have to listen to me, girl.”

“No.” Abigail refused, shaking her head. “If you are going to persuade me again to go for therapy then please don’t say the word.”

“That will be good_”

“No! I am not going for therapy and please don’t ever suggest that again.”

“Abby, you can’t continue like this. You can’t let this ugly nightmare keep controlling you like this. Sleeping under the bed won’t protect you from the scars and nightmares. You have to listen to me.”

“It is my nightmare, isn’t it? I am not going to therapy and that’s final. I am a doctor and I can take care of myself. You don’t expect me to leave my work and go to somebody’s office to tell the story of my past. The past I’ve been trying so ha-rd to forget. You are the only one I trust enough with my scars, Emma. If you really care about me as you claim then you will listen to me and stop forcing me to do what I don’t want!” She su-cked in a de-ep breath and released it with a de-ep sigh. “I am going to take a shower. You should do the same too. And please,” She hesitated. “let’s not have this conversation about therapy again. I won’t ever step foot there. Never.” She stormed inside the adjoined bathroom, shutting the door behind her.

Emma ran her fingers throu-ghher black hair, exhaling de-eply. “Will she ever listen to me? I guess not.”
