A Bet - S01 E12

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 12

Aubrey’s POV

To say I’m shocked right now is an un-derstatement. Did Khloe just stood up for me few minutes ago?

No, I’m probably in a trance. I pinched my skin over and over again only to discover it’s real.

“I will be in cla-ss” Khloe said jolting me out of my thoughts

“Why did you do it?” I said holding her hand as she was about leaving

“Why did I do what?” she asked looking lost

“Why did you defend me against that new student?”

“Ohh…… It’s nothing. I’m just trying to make up for the things I did to you in the past. I promise to protect you from bullies from now on”

“Thank you Khloe, you don’t know how much it means to me”

“So…….. friends? she said stretching her hand for a shake

“Friends” I said receiving her hand with a smile

She pulled me into a hug for a while after which we disengaged smiling sheepishly at each other.

“Let’s go to cla-ss, we’re almost late”

“Sure” and we went to cla-ss together.

The students started murmuring immediately we got into the cla-ss, I know they will be surprised seeing I and Khloe together.

Khloe left for her seat while I sat down alone as usual, I wonder why the students don’t want to have anything to do with me.

Minutes later, the murmuring among the students increa-sed. I ignored it at first but when I couldn’t take it anymore, I raised my head and was surprised to see Khloe standing beside me.

“Is anyone on this seat?” she said pointing to the seat beside me

“No, I seat alone. Any problem?”

“Not at all. I want to sit with you from today, can I? ”

“Uhhm…. of course” I replied not really sure of my response.

“Thanks” she said displaying her white set of teeth

The cla-ss was dead silent and if a pin was thrown on the floor, it would make a really loud noise.

The students stared at Khloe like she has gone nuts or something and I don’t blame them.

I’m also surprised but not like them because I know something is wrong with Khloe. I think she’s going throu-gha tough time.

The first teacher came in and she stared at the cla-ss like this is the first time she will be seeing it.

“Is this Khloe Robert?” the teacher asked clearly bewildered

“Yes ma’am” a student answered

“Are you kidding me? Khloe, are you okay?” the teacher said coming closer to Khloe

Khloe bent her head in embarra-ssment

“Let’s forget about that and look at what we have today” the teacher said when she noticed Khloe wasn’t ready to answer her question.

The teachers that came in throu-ghout that morning kept asking Khloe different questions but she bowed her head without answering any. Who knew Khloe could be this timid?

Break time

I packed by books and proceeded to my locker but Khloe stopped me.

“Can we have lunch together?” she asked politely. If not that I’m seeing these things with my two eyes, I wouldn’t have believed that Khloe could talk politely.

“No, I will go to the library instead”

“Why?” she asked looking confused

“Nothing really” I said looking down at my feet.

I don’t know why I feel really bad lying to Khloe, maybe it’s because we are now friends and I’m not used to hiding things from anyone I call friend.

“If it’s because of money, then you don’t have to worry. Lunch is on me”

“It’s not that. I’m not really hungry”

“Please….. I’m going to feel lonely if I go alone”

“What about your friends?” I asked suspiciously

“I don’t feel like eating with them”

“Why?”

“They’re going to influence me badly again. The only different person among them is Natalie but I just feel like spending time with the new friend I made”

Immediately she finished saying that, Natalie, Lilian and Sydney showed up.

“Errm…. Khloe, I wouldn’t want to have any problem with your friends so maybe you guys should just sort things out today, then we can have lunch some other time”

“But…. ” she was trying to say but I cut her off

“Please, they’re almost here. See you later, bye” I said and hurriedly walked away.

Khloe’s POV

Immediately Aubrey left, I suddenly felt lonely. She’s a really good girl and I regret everything I did to her.

“Khloe, are you sure you are okay? I mean, do you need to go for check up or something?” Lilian asked when they got to where I was standing

“Are you still asking her? Isn’t it obvious already? And I think we should be fast before it gets out of hand” Sydney said chewing her gum noisily

“Guys please…. I’m perfectly fine, just that I realized I’ve been wrong and I want to correct my mistakes” I said calmly

“Which mistakes?”

“Being a bully and other bad things I’ve done. I’m going to give you freedom to choose if you still want to be friends with me or not”

“What are you talking about?” Lilian said looking lost

“I’m a changed person now. I won’t bully anyone anymore, no late night parties too so you guys can decide.

Are you going to remain friends with me and also drop your bad habits or we should end our friendship here?”

“Really? Fine then, let’s just end the stupid friendship” Sydney said and walked away

“Same thing” Lilian said and also left

“What about you Natalie?” I asked when I noticed she wasn’t saying anything

“We’re still friends, forever….. At least Aubrey is included, right?”

“Yes. Thank you for standing by me”

“It’s nothing. Let’s go to Aubrey, I have to apologise to her”

“But you did nothing wrong” I said looking confused

“I watched you while you bullied her and that’s more than wrong. Let’s be quick before lunch is over” she said walking towards the library and I also followed her.

We got to the library and met Aubrey completely engrossed in the book she was reading. No wonder why she’s the brightest student in cla-ss.

“Hey Aubrey” Natalie said moving closer to her

“N.. Natalie” Aubrey stuttered and quickly stood up

“Common, you don’t have to be scared. I came to apologise for bullying you”

“You didn’t bully me, you were always quiet anytime they make mockery of me”

“Yeah and that’s enough reason to apologise. I should have either joined them or speak up for you but I just watched instead. I’m really sorry”

“It’s okay, I’m not mad at you. I actually envy your quietness” Aubrey said smiling softly

“So can we be friends?”

“Sure” Aubrey said shaking hands with her

“Alright. Lunch is over, let’s get back to cla-ss” I said to them

“Is this really Khloe? I better wake up from this dream before it’s too late” Natalie said and ran out

This is the first time I will be seeing her smile and I’m glad I’m kind of the reason for that smile.
