The Return of Acho, Episode Five

"I shot him! I mean I killed him. It was not intentional but he was going to spill some secrets that would negatively affect my life. I pleaded with him not to do it but he refused. He rushed out of the room and was on his way to spill the secret despite my relentless pleas. That was why I shot him. I didn't know he would die. It was not my intention to kill him." The female soldier said. She was crying profusely and her face had turned red out of emotional stress. She was talking to Acho who had rushed to Leke's house after the female soldier called him to come and witness the tragedy and possibly help hide her dirty tracks.

"How can you shoot someone with an AK47 and say you never expected him to die? Was it a toy gun? You obviously knew he would die. You are a trained military personel for God's sake and there is no way you could shoot and miss. You killed him intentionally and there is no denying that fact. Whatever it was that was the issue could have been sorted out through. amicable resolution, not taking his life. Honestly at this point, I must say you are always making irrational decisions." Acho said. He was pacing around Leke's room with so much restlessness and anger in his heart. He was beginning to ask himself why he ended up with someone as cruel as the female soldier. He never knew this ugly side of the lady who looked so beautiful in the outside.

"Don't judge me. I found myself in a difficult position and I had to act quickly to avoid being exposed. I just told you he was in possession of a secret that could affect my life negatively. That was why I shot him. Again, I have to repeat I didn't intend that he should die. I just wanted to demobilize him and that was all. But unfortunately, the bullet got him in a dangerous place. I just wanted him to keep shut and not tell anyone about my secret." The female solder kept saying. Her words were getting Acho angrier. She had a white handkerchief in her hand and she was using it to wipe the tears in her eyes, but it was still pouring like water. She had realized that she was in a difficult situation and things just got a little more complicated. She just came out of the General's case, and now, she was deep soup again.

"Stop saying you didn't intend for him to die. You knew you were holding a gun and you knew it could kill someone. You are not a child and certainly not brainless. You just killed a human being and you are trying to rationalize it by saying you never intended to kill him. You are making me more sad and at this stage, I must say I'm unable to help you. I'm just going to run away and allow you face this problem alone. If you are going to go down, you go down alone, you will not drag me with you. I'm too young to go to jail because of your irrational behaviour." Acho said. He made to leave and had reached the door, but the female soldier kept dragging him back.

"You can't leave me at this level. I need your help to sort out this mess. Please, Acho, don't leave. Remember we are supposed to get married in a week's time. You can't abandon me in my moment of vulnerability. Please, come and help me think of how to avoid going to jail." The female soldier said, holding tightly to Acho. But Acho forcefully extricated himself from her grip and stood separately.

"I just said I can't help you. And by the way, what was the secret that you did not want Leke to tell anyone? What were you hiding? And who were you hiding the secret from?" Acho asked.

"I'm pregnant." The female soldier said calmly with a lot of guilt written on her face. She was hoping that Acho would take things calmly, but she was mistaken.

"Pregnant for who? Because I certainly can't be the father of the child. Remember, it was only yesterday that I had the chance to open your honey pot after about two months. There is no way I'm the father of the child. So, I asked, who is the father of the child?" Acho had returned fully into the room and the female soldier was sitting down close to Leke's lifeless body. She had her two hands folded as if she was catching cold.

"Yes, you are right. You are not the father of the child. And also, Leke was not the father of the child. Sadly, the father of the child was the General." The female soldier said. She was still crying and even Acho could feel her sorrow.

"I knew it! knew you were hobnobbing with him. I knew there was something fishy. I knew something was not right but I chose to play along. Now, the secret you were hiding has been exposed in full. You are such a deadly serpent." Acho directed his gaze at the female soldier. If his eyes were to be a bomb, it would have shattered her into tiny shards.

"It was just only once that it happened between me and the General. He only tested the honey once." The female soldier said as she wiped her tears again with white handkerchief which had turned brown due to her makeup.

"I don't care how many times it happened and I don't even want to know. However, the most important thing now is that I'm glad I won't end up with you as a wife. That's not going to happen because you could just wake up one day and end my life like that of a chicken. So my dear, you are in this mess alone. You are on your own. Goodbye." Acho said as he approached the door and opened it.

"And where do you think you are going?" The female soldier asked. She had stood up and she was holding her gun ready to shoot.

"I'm going to my house and don't ever look for me. If they come for your arrest, you never knew me. And don't think you can intimidate me with that gun you are holding." Acho said.

"Don't step out of this room. I'm warning you. We are in this mess together. I can't be in it alone. My life was ruined because of you and you can't abandon me at this critical time." The female soldier said with lamentation. Acho did not listen to her. But immediately he stepped out, she shot him and he died. She dragged his body into the room and placed it the same place she had placed Leke's.

Earlier in the day, she had bought some pills she wanted to use and terminate the pregnancy. She brought out the pills and took all of them at once. It was not long before she started bleeding. It was the first time she was terminating a pregnancy and she did it without medical monitoring. After some hours of uncontrollable bleeding, she passed out and since there was no one to help take her to the hospital, she kicked the bucket. She never woke up.

One week later, people in the neighbourhood perceived some offensive odour from the build and had to check. That was how three dead bodies were discovered there.
