Odoziaku, Episode Three

"Ah! Mama! You are the one knocking. Welcome ma. You didn't tell us you were coming?" Aku said. He was at home as usual watching television when Odoziaku's mother came visiting. He had just finished eating fried rice and chicken. Every day after Odoziaku goes to work, he usually sneaks out to the restaurant where he buys fried rice and chicken and he enjoys it alone and trashes the plate before Odoziaku would come back.

"Aku! Aku my good in-law. Do I have to announce it on national television before visiting my daughter's house? But if you want me to go back let me know." Odoziaku's mother said with a smile on her face. She jokingly turned back to leave.

"Ah Ah! No mama! I was just joking. How can you go back when you have already arrived? Please give me your bag." Aku said as he collected the bag from the old woman. She brought some goodies for them, including anu nchi, ero, achi, oha, ube, akwa ogazi and sweet udala called nwannu.

"Handle the bag with care. I have eggs inside for my daughter. By the way, where is she? Where is Odoziaku? Hasn't she heard my voice? Or she is waiting for me to bring palm wine for her before she will come out and greet me?" The old woman asked. Aku is inwardly feeling very uncomfortable. He felt the woman is intruding into his life. He does not want her to discover any of the bad things he is doing to her daughter, so he tried to be as gentlemanly as possible.

"Mama, she went to work o! God recently blessed her with a job. Mama, you won't believe, Odoziaku is a blessing to my life. If hadn't married her, I'm sure I would be dead by now." Aku said. Those words stood only on his lips and the smile that followed also did not reach his heart. But Odoziaku's mother is not a child, and she has a very good knowledge of how men talk when they are lying.

"That's how you men talk when you are trying to deceive women. You talk as if you put sugar in your mouth. Until see my daughter, then I will know if you are taking good care of her. For now, please, show me a place to rest. The driver that carried us from Enugu is crazy. It as if he takes mkpuru mmiri. He kept bumping into potholes 'gowodom gwogodom gwodom. All my waist is broken." Odoziaku's mother said as she walked in bent position and into the living room.

"Sorry mama. Let me bring you something to eat." Aku said as he dashed out of the house. He is determined to do everything possible to cover his bad tracks. He went to the restaurant and bought fried rice and chicken lap for the old woman. From there, he went to the market and bought enough foodstuff worth N50,000. They had no food stuff at home. Previously, they use between N1,000 and N1,500 to cook soup. But today, he stocked the kitchen with fresh food and soup items, including fresh fish, meat and frozen chicken.

When he returned, Odoziauku's mother was too happy to eat the fried rice and chicken he bought for her.

"Oke ogo! I said it that my daughter did not make any mistake in marrying you. I'm grateful to God. This one you are petting me like this, I know that you will be pampering Odoziaku like an egg." The old woman said as she took a bite of the big chicken.

"Mama stop! You are making me to blush.

Please manage it while I personally prepare something sweeter for you. This one is just to whet your appetite." Aku said.

"Why not wait for your wife to come home and cook? That is her duty. No matter the kind of work she is doing, she must return and cook for her husband. That is Igbo culture." The woman said. She continued to scoop rice and put her mouth.

"No mama! She is usually very tired when she returns from work. I usually cook for her before she returns. When she comes back, I want her to just eat and rest so that she will not break down. You know I love Odoziaku too much." Aku said with a stupid smile on his face.

"But, you say you cook like this always? Don't you have work? You no longer go to work? You now stay at home and cook while your wife go to work?" Odoziaku's mother asked. She temporarily stopped eating so as to listen to the answer from Aku.

Aku was taken aback by the question, so he searched in his head and quickly produced a lie.

"Mama, we are actually on holidays. You know I work in a school. We have gone on holidays. Of course, when school resumes, she takes over the kitchen, but for now, it is my duty to pet her. "Aku said as he ran into the kitchen.

"Ehne! Ok! Oya go and cook, let me not waste your time." The woman was satisfied by the answer but she was not sure if the schools in Enugu are also on holidays, because she actually saw children going to school when she was coming to Lagos earlier in the morning. But she let the topic be and paid attention to the chicken and fried rice.

Odoziaku was surprised when she returned

from work and met so much food in the kitchen.

She had actually gone to the kitchen to cook

their normal N1,000 soup when she met a

delicious food cooked by her husband. She

quickly took food and ate her fill. She was so

hungry that she swallowed the food like a lion.

She was cleaning the plate with her fingers

when her mother entered the kitchen. She hadn't

seen her since she returned because the old

woman was resting in the guest room.

"I said it! I was wondering who bought all these food and who cooked the sweet soup. Only you could have made this kitchen to be full like this.

Mama welcome. I missed you so much!" Odoziaku said as she quickly rushed to give her mother a sweet, tight hug.

"I did not cook any soup o! And I did not buy any food. Your husband did the buying and the cooking. Why are you surprised that he cooked? He said he cooks for you every day. That he always wants you to rest when you come back from work." Odoziaku's mother said as they let go of each other.

"He said so?" Odoziaku asked.

"Yes he did! Is it a lie?" The old woman asked. She was then using her elderly eyes to scan Odoziaku. She was not satisfied with what she saw. Odoziaku looked skinny and unkempt.

"What is going on with you? You don't look good to me at all. Have you been eating at all?" The old woman asked.

"Mama......" Odoziaku wanted to open up to her mother when Aku, her husband entered the kitchen. One look from him was enough to tell Odoziaku to shut up and zip her lips.

"Of course I'm eating well. Can't you see how my precious husband is taking care of me? Are you not seeing it yourself? See the kitchen! Check out the soup! I'm so lucky to have this man in my life." Odoziaku said as she went straight to hug and kiss Aku. Aku responded with a kiss too and they managed to fool the old woman.

"Let me give you people space! Young people with young blood! Enjoy yourselves." Odoziaku's mother said as she left the kitchen.

"You must say nothing to your mother. If I hear pim or if you mention my name and say bad things about me, I will kill the both of you. I just bought a gun for your information. You must act normal and Mama must not discover anything! I'm warning you. Don't try me." Aku warned as he quickly pushed off Odoziaku from himself and left the kitchen.

Odoziaku broke down tears, crying like a baby inside the kitchen. But throughout the two weeks that her mother stayed with them, she had everything she wanted. Aku gave her as much money as she wanted. Because of how he acted, she even went to tell her pastor that God has answered her prayers, that her husband is a changed person. But when husband is a changed person. But when Odoziaku's mother left, Aku resumed his wicked ways.
