The Unbearable Burden, Episode Nine

"I'm very sorry Purity. I'm very sorry for all I did. "Lucia said. Her head was resting on Purity's body and they were at the back seat of the car while Chima was the one driving. They were close to the hospital when Lucia sneezed and started talking with a low voice, but Purity could hear her.

"She is talking. Jesus thank you. Honey, she is still alive and she is talking." Purity shouted as she stared directly into Lucia's eyes. She placed her left ear on her chest region to be sure she was still breathing and she heard her heart beating 'kpim kpim kpim." Purity was relieved that her friend was still alive but was aware she was not out of the danger zone yet. She had lost a lot of blood and was not sure she would make

it.

"Thanks goodness she is stilling breathing." Purity shouted again.

"I want to apologies to you for all the pains I have caused you. I did everything because of jealousy." Lucia said before releasing a loud cough. At that time, Chima drove into the hospital premises and parked his car under a guava shade. Immediately, nurses were called and they took Lucia into the hospital ward where the doctors started battling to save her life. Chima and Purity were at the reception area. Purity was hoping and praying the Lucia would make it out of the hospital alive, but she was not sure because nurses kept moving in an out of the ward with sad faces.

"It is my fault. I put my best friend in harm's

way because I was not able to control my anger.

My God, what have I done. I have done

something very terrible. I prefer she should stay

alive even if we are not in good terms. I never

meant to harm her. I acted out of anger because

I was sad that my friend betrayed my trust."

Purity said with hot tears in her eyes. She felt

directly responsible for what had happened to

Lucia and she felt very guilty.

"It was not your fault. It was her fault. She came

into my home and attempted to destroy my

marriage. In fact, even before I married you, she

had attempted to stop our marriage. To be very

honest, I have no single pity for Lucia and I

don't feel any guilt about whatever fate that

befell her." Chima said. His face bore not

emotions and he was simply pressing his

phone. He is even more concerned about the baby in Purity's belly than he was concerned about Lucia's life. He is thinking of how to handle Purity's pregnancy because he is not prepared to take responsibility of another man's baby.

"Can you listen to yourself at all? Where is your humanity? I thought you were kind, but I didn't know you are this heartless. My best friend is at the point of death and this is all you have to say?" Purity asked. She was still crying and the fact that Chima was not cleaning her tears made her feel even worse. Instead, he was intentionally adding salt to the injury.

"Why are you so naïve? You call Lucia your friend? Someone who wanted to take your husband from you? She made you unconscious and brought a man to have a bedroom action with you. She made your husband unconscious and had a bedroom action with him. What if you had died when she made you unconscious at the bar? What if I had died too? She never thought of the consequences when she was doing all these things. I'm shocked that you still see her as your friend instead of the enemy that she is. Please, stop shedding unnecessary tears. "Chima said and continued playing with his smart phone.

"Why are you talking like this?" Purity asked, displaying surprise on her face.

"I want to help you realize the person you are calling your friend is your enemy. Stop crying over her. She is not worth it." Chima said with a strong voice. As his voice became louder, many people in the reception room looked at them as if they wanted to hear what the argument was about.

Just then, a nurse came in to call Chima and Purity into the hospital ward.

"Lucia wants to see the both of you. We are done with the operation and she can talk properly now. Please follow me." The nurse said. She had white gloves in her two hands and a red and white pen could be seen on her chest pocket. She was smiling as she spoke. Her smiles reassured Purity that Lucia could still survive, but she was still not sure.

"How are you feeling Lucia? Please, I'm very sorry for pushing you. I never meant to hurt you. I was unable to control my anger." Purity said. It is now the three of them that were left in the hospital ward because the doctors and nurses had done their job and left.

"It was not your fault. It was my fault. I started the trouble and I want to seek your forgiveness before I will breath my last. I lost the baby and the doctors said I can't make it because of the injury. Purity, I want to ask for your forgiveness. Everything your husband said is true. I was jealous of you and I was wondering why you have good things while I was left empty- handed. From the day you introduced Chima to me, I wanted to take him from you. But I have seen now that jealousy didn't help me. Look at where I'm now. Please find a place in your heart and forgive me." Lucia said. She was crying and her voice was emotional and muffled.

"I forgive you my friend. I have forgiven you. Please, stay with me, don't leave me." Purity said. All these while, Chima was still pressing his phone with little attention to what Lucia was saying. He doesn't care.

"And Chima, I don't know what to say to you, but I know one day you will forgive me." Lucia said as she took her last breath.

When Purity saw that Lucia was not breathing anymore, she fell down and fainted. Chima did not know when she fell. She crashed and hit her ribs on the edge of the iron of the hospital bed.

The doctors gathered around and revived her within thirty minutes, but it was too late.

"She will live but she lost her baby. One of her ribs was broken because she fell badly." One of the doctors attending to Purity tells Chima. He was crying but inwardly, he was happy that the baby was gone.

"I'm sad the baby is gone. It was innocent, but it is good that I and Purity will now be able to mend our relationship. I don't know if we could still live together if the baby was still in her womb." A month later, Purity was discharged.

"I'm so sorry went to the club without telling you. I was thinking I should have a little fun. But I could have lost my life. Please, forgive me." Purity said as they were driving home from the hospital. She was occupying the front seat while Chima was driving.

"It was not your fault. Your friend deceived you. One thing you should know is that some friends are only close to you because of the good things you have. It is either they want to benefit from it or the want to take it completely. Sometimes, they want to take your joy while still pretending to be friendly with you. Be vigilant to pretending to be friendly with you. Be vigilant to avoid wolves in sheep's clothing. I love you so much Purity." Chima said.

"I love you too my husband." Purity respond.

THE END.
