After a minute or two we ended up at a secluded wooded region.

“You can’t even withstand this much and you had the audacity to threaten me?” the king’s voice sneered. “How will you lead the kingdom if you’re like this?” he paused, then chuckled lightly. “But then again I might have overdone it tonight. You managed to get me to turn up the intensity on you… I didn’t think I would have to use that yet… you’re making progress. I’ll reward you with some rest.”

Kevin cautiously entered the clearing and stretched his hand out behind him, keeping me back. I tried to see past him, but the trees on either side of us were blocking my view.

“Kevin… and Elizabeth,” the king said even though he couldn’t see me. His voice had a burst of easiness. I could almost hear his reserved smile.

Kevin tensed slightly. He stepped back as the king exited with a sigh.

“Dear, this is nothing for you to see,” he frowned. “But then again, you know that you can make everything better,” he whispered and left.

Kevin rushed into the clearing and I ran behind him. Ashton was lying in the middle of the clearing. He didn’t move or respond as I knelt beside him in panic. He was unconscious and was bleeding from both nostrils. My breath hitched in my throat. There were no visible signs that he had been hit. I took a few deep breaths to calm myself and checked his pulse.

Kevin trembled in rage beside me and I was worried he would storm off after the king.

“Kevin,” I gasped, but I didn’t have time to worry about whether he would or not.

Without a ring, the king wouldn’t be able to hurt him. Right?

I got behind Ashton and tried to push him up by the shoulders. I knew that muscles weighed a lot, but by the time I managed to sit him upright I was wheezing. I let his body lean on me and I nearly toppled over. I guess I needed to start exercising. I pressed all my weight against him so that he was leaning forward.

Sitting him in an upright position helped to prevent the blood from running down his throat and choking him. I gently but firmly pinched the soft part of his nose and set a fifteen minute timer on my phone. That should stop the nosebleed.

After a minute had passed, Kevin managed to regain his composure. He helped me to support Ashton with his body.

“Thanks, Liz.”

“Hey, it’s nothing,” I said. “I just wished I had tissue or cotton pads,” I frowned as blood dripped slowly from Ashton’s nose.

“I should have come sooner,” he growled, punching the ground.

“Hey, don’t do that,” I cautioned as his hand scraped against a rock.

“This will be better in a few minutes,” he sighed.

“What did his dad do to him?” I asked shakily.

“I think he did the mind thing that he usually does. But this time it’s different,” he frowned. “Ashton’s never passed out from it before.”

“The king did say he turned up the intensity,” I remembered.

“That means what he’s been doing all this time wasn’t even the full power,” Kevin scowled, punching the ground again. I grabbed his hands and held them in a ball in my lap.

“It’s powerful enough to knock him unconscious without even touching him physically…” he trailed off in anger.

“I’m concerned as to why he would do that to his own son and just walk away as if it was nothing.”

I glanced at the timer, seven minutes had passed and Ashton’s nose wasn’t bleeding anymore, but I still decided to wait the full fifteen minutes before moving him. I looked down at Kevin’s hand which was already scratch free. Their enhanced healing really was no joke.

A rustling came from the bushes and Beau and Raúl stepped out. Kevin quickly filled them in on what had happened.

“And he’s unconscious?” Beau asked in disbelief.

“It’s not impossible,” Kevin reminded him.

“Yeah, but do you have any idea how painful that had to be to knock an Alpha out?” he commented, kneeling beside Ashton and checking his pulse.

“He’s stable,” I said. “But we have to take him back to the palace. If the bleeding starts again, he’ll need to see a doctor.”

“Leave that to us,” Raúl said as he and Beau put Ashton’s arms around their shoulders and lifted him off the ground.

In turn Kevin helped me up. I almost fell back down. Seeing Ashton in that state had made me so shocked, but adrenaline had kicked in and I was able to move efficiently. Now I was still worried about him; I just wanted him to open his eyes.

“Can you walk?” Kevin asked, wrapping his arms around me to prevent me from falling.

I nodded against him.

“Maybe we should take him to a doctor first,” I pondered.

“The royal doctor will come to see him if he doesn’t wake up in a few hours,” Raúl mentioned.

“You’ll make a great doctor, Liz,” Kevin smiled.

“That’s if the Royal University will let me in,” I sighed. “Being from the Common Realm, I’m already at a disadvantage. Plus tuition costs an arm and a leg. Why the heck is it 100k a semester?”

“They got rid of the royalty/nobility only rule, so I’m pretty sure you’ll get in with your grades.”

“Hopefully.”

He rolled his eyes at that. “You’re doing AP classes while taking college courses. And you’re actually topping every class. Why do you keep on doubting yourself?”

“I don’t know,” I murmured. “I just feel like I can do much better than what I’m doing now.”

“Hey, no need to do any better,” he laughed. “You make the rest of us look like we’re not even trying. Besides, you don’t have to worry about money, you know. If you wanted, I could pay-”

I shook my head before he could finish making that offer. “Thanks, Kev. I really appreciate it. But I want to work hard towards this. That way, I’ll really feel like I earned it. Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask, why don’t you go the Royal Academy?”

I’d been curious about if for a while now. Most nobles went to the Royal Academy and then matriculated to the Royal University if their grades were good enough.

“We don’t have to attend the Royal Academy, but most people do because it’s the best school in the kingdom, exclusive to royals and nobles and close to their homes. I decided to go to a regular high school instead because I wanted some more freedom. Then the king suggested I go to the same school as Ashton. And look, it brought us to you and I got to meet Callie and Mel too. Besides, the academy is basically a matchmaking place. Lots of people get engaged by the time they graduate.”

“Then, Ashton wouldn’t have known that I was his soulmate if he never came to Westwood High?”

He shook his head. “Everyone gets an opportunity to meet their soulmates eventually,” he shrugged. “You and Ashton would have run into each other somewhere else.”

I thought about this. I wouldn’t have been able to escape Ashton either way. I smiled to myself. It was like this soulmate bond had some kind of GPS.

We got to Ashton’s house and the guys let themselves in. There was no sign of his parents or Brooke. I followed them up to the third floor. I had never been up this far before. It kind of felt like I was trespassing.

Kevin held the double doors open so that they could take him inside. The room was spacious and was a dark blue color with touches of gold and black. It seemed very Ashton. His ceiling held an elegant golden chandelier and his room was decorated with an exquisite glass desk that housed various papers, books and a computer. On either sides of the walls were flat screen tvs. I was baffled as to why he needed three.

They laid him on the king sized bed and I propped his head up on the pillows and checked to make sure the bleeding hadn’t started again.

The bedroom was connected to an en-suite bathroom. I asked Kevin to get me some tissue or cotton pads and a clean towel damped with warm water. With these I cleaned Ashton’s nose as best as I could. Some blood had also dripped onto his shirt so I asked the guys to remove it and replace with a clean one.

“It’s just blood,” they protested, but I glared at them and stepped out of the room.

I glanced down at my phone and nearly had a heart attack. I groaned, just remembering my curfew. It was almost six o’clock and I should have been home at five. It would take at least forty-five minutes to get to my house from here. I face-palmed myself as I saw the millions of missed phone calls from my parents. Well, not millions, but there were at least ten.

I sighed. I guess I would never be able to leave the house again, except to go to school. Goodbye new found freedom. It was fun while it lasted.

Kevin stepped out of the room and I must have looked pretty distressed.

“What happened now?” he asked, tousling my hair.

I showed him the time on my phone and he groaned. I nodded.

“It was nice knowing you,” he joked.

I pouted. I really didn’t want to leave Ashton like this. I wanted to stay with him longer until he woke up.

“Ashton will be okay,” he reassured me as I gazed longingly at the doors. “He seriously needs to get some rest. We don’t need as much sleep as regular humans, but we still have to sleep at some point.”

I sighed and reluctantly muttered okay.

“I’ll drive you home,” he said, placing his fingers on either side of my frown and drawing them up to make a smile. He stifled a laugh and I imagined I must look pretty silly. I managed a laugh and then sighed.

“Let’s go before my parents suggest home schooling.”

He laughed at this and we headed downstairs. Kevin’s parents were among the very few nobles who had the privilege to live close to the royal residence, so we walked to his house and on the way, I called my parents and told them that I’d be home soon. I had really wanted to say hi to his parents, but I knew that we would end up chatting the evening away so I bit back the temptation and got into his car.

I rested my head against the cool glass as we drove off. My mind kept flashing back to Ashton lying unconscious on the ground. I shook my head to get rid of the thoughts.

“Do you need a distraction?” he asked, glancing at me through the mirror.

I sighed and nodded.

“We got some good news today,” he reminded me. “Beau’s going to be a dad. I can imagine it and at the same time I can’t.”

“I’m happy for them. I like Bianca too, she’s super fun.”

“If by fun you mean sciencey, then okay,” he laughed. “But, yeah, she’s pretty cool.”

“Is their child going to be a Beta, since both of them are Betas?

“Yeah.”

“But won’t they inherit any genes from the rest of the family. Like for example, if the grandparents aren’t Betas.”

He shook his head, “It’s all up to the parents’ genes,” he explained to me as it began to rain. “Alpha’s have the purest bloodlines, so the Alpha gene is the strongest. The strength decreases the further down you go. Omegas have the weakest.”

I nodded as I wrapped my mind around that.

“The stronger the bloodline is, the higher the chance of the child inheriting it. But it isn’t so black and white. Remember, there are twenty-four ranks. If there’s a gap between the bloodlines, then the child might fall somewhere in between. For example,” he said upon seeing my confused expression, “With Kristof and Diana. Kristof is a Beta and Diana is a Delta, between those bloodlines you also have Gamma. So their child could be either a Beta, Gamma or Delta. But, the Beta bloodline is so strong that the child definitely won’t be a Delta. More than likely the child will be a Beta too.”

“I think I understand,” I nodded, going over what he just told me. “And the Beta line is that strong because it’s second, right after Alpha.”

He nodded. “But, no matter who an Alpha mates with, the child will definitely be an Alpha too. If two low ranks were to mate, say a Tau and an Omega, the child wouldn’t be an Omega, but the rank would still be very low. Omegas really have nothing to lose,” he shrugged. “Now an Omega mating with another Omega is very sad.”

“I don’t see anything wrong with Omegas,” I defended.

“Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against them,” Kevin said lightly. “But many persons do. The higher ranking persons don’t mate with Omegas, even though their bloodline is strong enough to combat it, because the chance that their child’s rank might fall scares them, and low ranking persons are afraid that their child will end up with an even lower rank than them,” he explained.

“I don’t think social class should matter if you really love someone. Isn’t it the way you feel about them the most important?”

“That should be the case with soulmates. But arranged marriages still happen. Even though an Alpha and Omega would produce a child that’s an Alpha, they consider it a disgrace to be mated with Omegas or any rank lower than Epsilon really.”

I frowned at that, remembering what Ashton had told me earlier about arranged marriages.

“But I don’t have a rank.” I remembered suddenly. “I’m a commoner.”

“You don’t say,” he chuckled. “No, you’re just neutral. Most royals don’t mind neutral soulmates. Marriages happen with other kingdoms that don’t have genetic ranks, although they usually choose from the upper class. Their child will just take the rank of the soulmate with one. Well Omegas might mind it.” Amusement gleamed in his eyes. “You and Ashton will have Alpha kids. Isn’t that sweet.”

I blushed and looked for something to slap him with that might do some damage. He grinned when I couldn’t find anything and just settled for using my hand.

As he pulled up at my house, I could see my parents waiting for me on the porch. I saluted to him. “I’m really glad I got to know you. Tell Mel and Callie bye for me.”

He pretended to wipe a tear from his eye as I got out of the car. I looked over as I heard his car door slam shut.

“Tell them yourselves,” he said as I opened my gate.

“What are you doing?” I asked as he stepped in after me.

“Making sure you live to see another day. You can thank me later.”

----------------------------------------------------------

I grinned and waved as Kevin left. He had told my parents how I managed to help Ashton, and explained that that was the reason I was late. As usual, my parents went soft on Kevin and decided not to increase my curfew. Whew! I was lucky that they loved my besties. Guess I could keep my freedom after all.

Thanks, Kev ❤, I texted him as I headed up to my room.

No problem, Liz 😉

Hey don’t text and drive, that’s dangerous

Okay mom
