No Number

Blake

It was adorable watching Nicole struggle with her wrinkled dollar bill. When it got spit back out for the fifth time, she let out a frustrated groan and stuffed the bill back into her jean pocket. And that's exactly why her bills were wrinkled in the first place.

She saw the way I tried to hide my amused smile and rolled her eyes. "Yeah, laugh at my struggle, jerk."

I pulled my wallet out—the one I had put back in 'cause she insisted that she got her own. I wasn't gonna argue with her independence, but I knew she really wanted a snack. If she didn't, she wouldn't even be out here with me right now.

The moment she saw me insert a crisp ten dollar bill into the slot and motioned for her to insert her preferred number, she only hesitated for a second before picking the snacks she wanted. She watched her snacks fall and bent down to retrieve them.

Snacks in hand, she smiled at me, pulling in her beautiful dimples that I realized I was starting to adore. "Thank you, I'll pay you back when we go back to our dorm."

I waved her off, taking a bite of the chocolate bar I picked out. "Don't worry about it."

She narrowed her eyes at me, and I knew she thought there might be a catch. It was sad that women had to assume men wanted something in return for anything nice they did for them. And I was kind of offended she would think I was the same as the rest of them. Though, I couldn't really blame her. I was still a man. Just had to prove myself that I was different.

Sure I wanted her under me and I craved feeling her lips on me, but I wasn't gonna force her in any way. Paying for her stuff when I invited her was just what I did for anyone.

"You could stop looking at me like that."

She stuffed a handful of fruit snacks into her mouth. "Like what?"

"Like I'm going to force you to do something just 'cause I bought you cheap snacks." She followed when I started walking back to our dorm. "I wouldn't even expect anything of you if I paid for an expensive meal at that."

She hummed, pouring more snacks into her palm. "Am I supposed to be impressed?"

"You're a real asshole, you know that?" I sighed, maybe a bit too loudly. "All I'm trying to say here is that you don't have to pay me back and you don't have to be afraid of me asking for anything."

"Afraid?" The question came with a snort. "I wouldn't give you anything even if you did ask. I can handle myself just fine."

When we got to our door, it beeped three times when I scanned my key card. And as I tried again with another fail, Nicole stood to the side, trying her best to hide her giggles. Even as I kept failing, I still tried to let ourselves in over and over.

This stupid door really had something against me.

"Here, give me." Nicole snatched the key card from my fingers and swiped it herself. Of course the son of a bitch beeped once and granted her access inside.

"Is the door a feminist?" I grumbled, letting her walk in first as she handed me back my card. "Swear it never lets me in the first time."

"Good."

She dumps her snacks on her bed and stuffs the rest of her fruit snacks in her mouth to throw the wrapper away. The trash can sits on the corner of the room behind the door, and I tease her by laughing when she misses. Her wrapper gracefully floats to the ground and she looks over her shoulder to glare at me. "Oh it's funny?"

"Very."

"I'm glad the door has something against you. And I hope it stays that way." She bends down to properly dispose of her trash. "Matter of fact, I hope one day it locks you out completely."

My laughter stopped. She was cute when she was annoyed. Cuter when she acted feisty. "Oh wow, you're evil."

"Only to people who get on my last nerve."

Last time I checked, Patricia wasn't a blonde. What the fuck happened between now and the last time I saw her. It was hard not to let my thoughts slip through my lips. "What the fuck happened to you?"

"I think it looks great! Don't you, Mel?" She turned to her roommate as she puffed up her curls. "I went to get it done earlier."

Mel nodded and whispered a simple, "Yes." Before going back to her laptop. Hands down one of the shyest girls I'd ever encountered. And that was saying a lot. I've met a lot of shy girls in my life. More outgoing than shy, but there were still a good amount.

"Nicole said it would look great on me."

I raised a brow at her, because Nicole had been in our dorm all day. She hadn't even seen her. "Nicole?"

"Yeah I texted her my options and she went with the blonde, so did Justus." Patricia sat in front of her small vanity beside her bed and played with her hair, a wide smile on her face. I never understood why she chose to have that thing in here. It sacrificed quite a bit of space, even if it was her smallest option.

"Justus gave you opinions about hair?" What a weirdo. "And you have Nicole's number?"

"Mhm." A red lipstick glided across her lips before she patted it down with her ring finger. "I got it from her last week. Had to convince her. You know, the emergency card always works."

If my sister had her number, then it would be a hell of a lot easier to get it for myself. Now there were two sources to get it from. The easiest source being Patricia.

"And no, I'm not giving it to you."

Or maybe not.

"Why not?"

She laughed at me through the reflection, only sparing me a glance before she continued to check herself out. "Because if she hasn't given it to you, then it's because you don't deserve it."

"To be fair, I haven't asked for it yet." Because I knew she'd say no anyway.

"Then you can ask her for it yourself. I'm not giving it to you." She smirked because she knew Nicole wouldn't either. If she had to beg for it as a girl, it would be close to impossible for me to be able to get it from her. My sister just loved when I finally found a challenge.

Challenges were fun so I wasn't complaining, but I really thought getting her number would at least be one of the easier tasks.

"Anyway," Patricia finally stood and grabbed my arm to pull my out of her dorm. "You sure you don't wanna come along, Mel?"

Her roomie didn't even bother to look up from her laptop as she shook her head. "No, have fun."

"I'm glad I can at least hang out with your roommate. I truly thought I'd be besties with my roommate this year." The frown on her face was rare. I didn't like it. But she switched it back to a smile when we approached my dorm. "I'll just steal your roomie tonight."

"I thought I was your company tonight?"

She tugged on the lanyard hanging from my back pocket, successfully retrieving my key card before scanning it. Of course it let her in on the first try.

Nicole hummed from her position on the bed, her face buried in the pages of yet another book with a naked man on the cover. That was just her thing by now. Nicole and her naked men on books. "Wow, the door didn't give you any trouble this time? I'm kind of disappointed."

"Don't be." Patricia walked in and Nicole dropped her book to stare at my sister. An impressed grin took over her features, her eyes bouncing all over my sister's head. "I scanned it."

"Holy shit, your hair," she gushed as my sister twirled around to give her a three-sixty view of it. "It looks a lot better than the picture you sent."

"Speaking of," I interrupted their girly moment. "Why does my sister get your number but I don't?"

They both smiled at each other. Like they knew something I didn't.

Did they know something I didn't?

Nicole spoke up next, getting off her bed to properly greet my sister with a hug. "I gave it to her for emergencies. Duh."

"I'm your roommate, though, I should be the one with your number if it's for emergencies." I crossed my arms over my chest as they stood next to each other, both holding their ground against me. "What if I got locked out?"

"That doesn't sound like a bad thing to me." She shrugged with a small mischievous laugh. "And you can just tell Patricia to text me if you really needed me."

This girl will be the death of me. She was stubborn as all hell. "Why go through all that when I can just have your number?"

"Yeah, no." She tapped my shoulder as they both walked past me, planning to leave me alone in the room. Not on my watch.

"Sorry, Blake." Patricia waved me off when I made an attempt to follow them. "Girl's night tonight, so you can't come. Love you, though!" She threw over her shoulder as they both walked away.

I really just got ditched by my own sister.
