The Buttermilk Pancakes

_____________

Connor watched Serena destroy a plate of buttermilk pancakes with a small bag of cat food sticking out of her purse.

The minute her lips touched the fluffy bread, its like she remembered how hungry she was. Connor had to put his hand over his smile to stop himself from chuckling, she was barely acknowledging him as she ate, clearly lost in the sweetness of the sticky breakfast.

"You know you're supposed to breath between bites right?" She stopped and looked up at him with wide eyes, he shrugged and continued, "might prevent you from choking and me having to resuscitate you. Would that be something."

Serena's eyebrows furrowed together and she swallowed the bite in her mouth , shyly wiping her sticky lips, "Are you patronizing me?"

Another shrug from Connor, "Maybe."

She rolled her eyes and took another bite, moving comically slow now, "Better asshole?" She parted her lips, pushing the dripping pancake towards her opened mouth at the pace of turtle.

He couldn't help but laugh at her, leaning forward he pushed he hand softly, making the fork jerk the piece into her mouth, "You're a piece of fucking work, Rena."

Glaring at him with a full mouth, she chewed her bite. Connor just shook his head and smirked. From the outside looking in, they probably looked like they were together. Sitting there in the worn pleather booths, talking over a meal in dim fluorescent lights.

It made him wonder how they looked to the world, if the reality that the two them barely could stand each other was apparent, or if the little blips they showed the world conveyed a different message.

The idea intrigued him, made Connor wonder who left the restaurant with the notion they were a couple.

Foxglove Love, his favorite book popped into his head while he watched her.

The main character, Mavis reminded him of Serena in different ways. He wasn't really sure why because he knew very little about Serena's personal life, but when the light caught her eyes in certain ways and specific times when she withheld a smile. He felt like he knew her in and out like he knew that character.

Now was one of those moments, his heart caught on itself, he stared at her as she wiped her mouth clean and enjoyed the sweet food.

"I was chatting with Melody earlier." Connor blurted out.

Serena stilled over her nearly empty plate, and the connotation of what he said dawned on him.

"About how she edits Skylyn's book."

She slowly looked at him with a deadly still face, her eyes slightly wider than they normally rested, "really?"

He raised an eyebrow at her and scratched the back of his head, "yeah that really surprised me when I heard at the game last week. I've told you about how I love Skylyn's books, I mean you've seen my collection, so I was picking her brain apart."

Serena looked afraid, panicked even. Connor watched as she gripped her coffee mug tighter, and bit her lip hard.

Was she jealous?

Was the first thought the filtered through Connor's head.

"H-how'd you talk to her?"

"I got her number as-well when I asked for yours. We haven't talked that much, she got back to my texts today." Connor leveled a small smirk at her, playing with this idea of her jealously made a satisfied feeling wash over him.

"And what did she tell you." Serena's voice quivered between her words, her face serious and fearfully still.

He paused, observing her for a moment in which she seemed increasingly uncomfortable under his close gaze, she adverted her eyes after a moment, "Someone's angry" Connor mumbled.

"I'm not angry-" Her eyes cut over to the bell above the door jingling, a group of five walked in, making Serena's eyes widen and her chest start rising and falling faster. She turned back to Connor shrinking further into the booth, "just hurry up and tell me."

"Well, it wasn't much, she must be under some sort of contract because all she would say is she edits for Skylyn and that there is a new book being worked on. I pressed for anything, age, gender, even height for gods sake. And nothing, she told me literally nothing." Connor sighed and leaned back heavily into his seat, running a hand through his thick hair trying not to let the disappointment show on his face. He looked up at Serena, she stared at her plate and took conscious slow breaths. Her knee bouncing under the table.

"Are you okay short cake?" Connor's own needs melted away as concern pushed forward, he noticed how pale she looked, how she kept looking around at the people in the restaurant, aware of every move they made around her.

Her wide eyes peaked up at him in frantic pleas, she locked her fingers together and rubbed them nervously. The bells above the door jingled making her visibly jump, "Can we please...leave" She said quickly through short breaths.

Connor was growing more and more worried as he watched her, his heart twisted in his chest and a protective urge pushed his hand across the table to reach for hers.

Serena yanked it away like a jolt of lightening, Connor nearly winced from the pain that the one movement inflicted on his heart.

"Uh, yeah lets go." Connor pulled his hand back grabbed his wallet from his back pocket, filtering through the green bills that laid inside. Pulling out two twenties to throw them on the table. He then walked over to Serena's side of the booth.

He could see her legs better now, shaking subtly as opposed to bouncing. She was shaking.

He replayed their short lunch, trying to pin point exactly what made her feel so...frantic.

But he couldn't place it, seemingly out of no where, she turned into an apparition being seen for the first time. Desperately trying to go invisible.

Serena shot up and nearly sprinted for the door, walking out without him. He stood there for a moment mentally playing catch up.

His heart hurt with every beat, feeling like he did something to cause this.

Connor walked out, his shoulder feeling heavy and something dark looming in his body as he approached his door.

He could see her out the screen door of the restaurant, she was already in the passenger seat. Ready to leave.

And as if the day couldn't get any more disastrous, a women with blonde pink tinted hair and narrowed brown eyes, stepped into his gaze while he was walking out.

Immediately all air deflated from his lungs and his shoulders sagged nearly to the floor, "What are you doing here, Destiny."

She put a hand on her hip and narrowed a smile at him, "Well if it isn't the dick I used to fuck. I'm here to get food, obviously."

"Jesus Destiny, I can't do this right now with you. Step aside." Connor wrinkled his nose at her and moved to push past Destiny but her pointed nails dug into his shoulder.

His eyes widened, looking from her manicured hand, to her face, then over to Serena's watchful gaze in the car.

Naturally, destiny followed his gaze, "Aw new play thing? What slut did you pick up from a party this time."

"What? Destiny are you on molly or some shit. She's just my neighbor."

"I don't take my neighbors to a diner at 1:30 in the evening." She crossed her arms and narrowed a smirk at her, "Is the serial playboy committing finally? I gotta say, everything aside, I'm jealous it's not me." She shrugged.

The word commitment swirled around in Connor's head like maelstrom. Pumping it into his heart and making it turgid.

It swelled and swelled till he was back in his childhood house, holding Honey as an infant, feeding her milk he warmed up. Trying and failing to get her to stop crying.

He took a step closer to Destiny, her chest nearly grazing his, their breaths mingling from the proximity, "I'm not fucking committed to shit, and if anyone asks you can tell them what I just said." He mumbled calmly, holding her gaze for a moment longer while she stared at him.

Connor took a step back once the pulsing in his heart subsided, turning to the car, he walked back and opened his driver side door.

"Connor." Destiny called from the steps, he turned around and looked at from over his shoulder. She sported a Cheshire smile, dripping in molasses, "shoot me a call sometime. Let's catch up babe."

She turned and walked into the restaurant before he could even open his mouth.

Leaving him there to settle into his driver seat and shut the door.

A beat of heavy silence, Connor turned to Serena, "Hey are you-"

"Just drive me home."
