I've Warned You

Olivia

When I finally stepped out of the room I'd been kept isolated in, I was surprised to find a huge and invitingly warm hallway. I'd had the impression that the estate was as hard and gray as a prison.

I startled when I found Shayne standing right beside the door as she leant casually against the wall. She looked down at me sideways, and my heart somersaulted in fear and awareness. "I'm ready."

"Congratulations. Now, before we get going, tell me right now whatever it is you're planning."

"I-I'm not p-planning anything."

She pushed herself off the wall and braced a long fingered hand against the door frame beside my head-partly caging me in. Our faces seemed way too close. "Last chance. Tell me now."

Whatever evil made me slide my gaze down to her sexy sculpted lips, I didn't know. But I did notice her intense hazel eyes drop as well, but instead of ending at my mouth, they continued their way down like they owned my body.

A shiver ripped through me as my most feminine parts tingled and throbbed in response to her heated eyes.

The realization hit me then that even before the fire, our chemistry must have been as hot and crackling as now. It felt much too powerful to not have existed.

I licked my lips, hating the blush that was burning my neck and cheeks. "I'm not planning anything," I repeated.

"I've warned you," she husked. I was finally able to breathe when she stepped away, giving me another quick appraisal. "That dress might attract a lot of attention, but we'll take extra measures to keep you safe. As long as you're with me, you'll be fine. Do you understand?"

I nodded, hoping she didn't read the thoughts spiraling around in my head.

"Will you be able to walk down the stairs on your own?"

Frightened by the thought of her touching me, I responded too loudly. "Yes, I will."

But I knew I was wrong. Although my legs had gained back their function, I wasn't sure how well they'd do on stairs. During my shower, a single step that rose to the bathtub had almost claimed my face.

To my surprise, with great concentration of course, I'd managed to walk down the first few steps. But a blond haired boy with big innocent eyes stole my concentration as he gaped at me from below the stairs. Hence, the momentary deactivation of my legs. I almost fell head first down the stairs if it wasn't for Shayne's lighting fast reflex to grip me to her body.

"I got you," Shayne said. I looked up at her face and found patience there. It wasn't fair that I was still so afraid of her.

When we reached the last step, she introduced me to the boy, but he continued to look at me with wide shocked eyes.

"Woah, she's so much more prettier that aunt Laura said." He spoke with wonder rather than admiration. He did look like a twelve year old after all.

"I'm sure she is. Go to your room, kiddo. I'll see you in a bit." A bite of jealousy grabbed at me when I saw a wealth of warmth and fondness in Shayne's eyes as she ruffled the boy's hair.

I wanted that affection directed at me so badly I'd die. But the thought of being in that position also horrified me, terribly.

An impressive black Jeep that I was sure I'd been in before was waiting for us in the driveway. As well as two already occupied unfamiliar SUVs sandwiching the beastly machine.

I was starting to get nervous. I hadn't anticipated a convoy.

Shayne hadn't let me go until she helped me get into the back seat. All the touching, however innocent, was creating a mixture of dread and excitement

through my nerves. I couldn't decide which was stronger; my fear or my fierce attraction towards her.

Twenty minutes later, I found out that it was my fear that was strongest.

My memory wasn't completely useless. Although I didn't know anything that involved me or my past, I knew everything else. Like how a gang or mob operated, and how dangerous they were. I'd seen how Shayne had given clipped commands to the men in the SUVs to search the perimeter of the isolated gas station we'd driven to. They'd received the commands without question or hesitation.

It then clicked, the reason why I was so afraid of Shayne. I must have found out, before the coma, that she was a blood thirsty monster. Who's to say she wasn't the reason for the coma?

As I pretended to look for a box of tampons, I eyed the silver glock of the gun Shayne had tried to discreetly hide under her shirt. If I made any wrong move, I knew my fate would be met with a bullet from that weapon.

When we went to the counter, I noticed the bearded cashier look at me for a moment too long. It was a shame it didn't resemble a look of recognition, I'd have begged for his help.

Shayne noticed the man's wondering eyes. "Look at her like that for a second longer and I'll make sure you know the nonexistent difference between me and hell."

The poor man hadn't seemed to realize the danger that Shayne was until that very moment. He quickly looked away and got about looking for some change.

"I have to use the bathroom," I said to Shayne, already heading in the direction of the door that had a female icon on it.

I didn't reach far when Shayne grabbed my arm and pulled me to her. Her eyes dug into my very soul. "Don't do anything stupid."

I managed to sound upset. "What could I possibly do? Your gigantic henchmen have the place surrounded and I'm pretty sure I won't get far with these jelly feet."

She narrowed her eyes at me and I gave her an overly defiant look despite the alarming pace of my heartbeat and the burning sensation of her strong grip on my arm.

She let me go. "Be quick."

When I got into the ladies' bathroom, I did use the toilet. The nervousness seemed to overwhelm my blooder. But I also thought out my strategic plan.

Yes, I was trying to escape.

From the moment I'd woken up from the coma, I'd desperately wanted to. This was my chance.

I thanked whoever was looking at me from above when I found an air vent that was a few centimeters off the floor.

The screws easily popped off and I quietly put aside the cover. I started to wiggle through the limited space, the main hindrance being my hips and butt.

A moment later of my spy work, I was able to see some natural light slicing through a vent. Too much luck on my side, I gasped in disbelief when the rusty old vent gave way to my shoving palm.

I crawled out and made sure to stay low. The vent had led me to the back of the building, where a bunch of wooden crates were stacked over each other. About a hundred feet from me was the beginning of a thick woodsy area that would be my way to freedom.

One of Shayne's men appeared around a corner and I ducked before he could make me. A minute later, I peeked up to find the same man, but this time he was occupied by some random gray coated cat. His heart was in his eyes as he petted it. Mushy serial killer.

With the mammoth of a man occupied, I was able to sneak towards the side of the building. And just then, my luck ran out.

"Going somewhere?" Shayne sneered as she materialized right at the corner.

My heart began to beat a mile faster. I surely was going to die now.

Instinct had me leaping to the side and sprinting for the woods. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get very far when Shayne caught me in mid air and threw me over her shoulder, so effortlessly I was stunned. But I soon recovered and thought maybe my end wouldn't come if I begged.

"Please, I'll give you anything you want. Just don't hurt me, I beg of you. If you let me go, I won't tell anyone, I promise."

Shayne didn't reply but I could feel her infuriation through the tight muscles of her shoulders. She was going to kill me.

Then I'd fight to the death.

The first hit to her back actually hit a tender spot around all the toughened muscle. I received a hiss and a hard slap to my backside. I gasped in surprise, and to avenge my butt cheek, I gave her a nice hard bite on the same spot I'd hit.

"Fuck!" she roared. She yanked me off her shoulder but not before I was able to grab something. As soon as my feet hit the ground, I pointed the barrel of her gun at her head.

The few of Shayne's men that had been watching the spectacle with amusement instantly withdrew their weapons. A sum total of fifteen guns were aimed at me. How long after I pulled the trigger would I be nothing but holes and blood?

Shayne actually looked bored.

"Put away your fucking guns!" Shayne ordered to her men. They reluctantly followed the command, wondering why their boss was acting dumb and irrational. I was wondering the same thing, but I wasn't going to lose my focus.

"My father taught me how to use a gun, so don't think I won't pull the-"

As if at the speed of light, the weapon was deftly swiped out of my grip. Shayne was now holding the gun to my head. How did she do that?

I shut my eyes, waiting for the bullet to explore the insides of my skull. But when I felt nothing, I blinked them open to find her glaring at me. The gun was nowhere in sight but the livid look she was giving me sure could kill.

She was growling. "Did you really think I'd shoot you? I would never-" She cut herself short, a look of alarm filling her features. Gorgeous perceptive eyes scanned the area around us. "Something's wrong. Get down!"

She grabbed me by my arms, causing our bodies to collide. For the briefest of moments, my body erupted with sparks from the feeling of her hard body. But the moment disappeared as soon as I heard the heart-wrenching sounds of fire power.

I could barely contain my scream.

Shayne shielded me with her body as she led us to the cars. But as soon as we rounded a corner, they burst apart into blindingly bright orange flames.

She didn't waste a moment. She lifted me off my feet and raced for the woods. The sounds of the gun war were still behind us as Shayne went deeper into the woods.

After what seemed like hours, but what must have only been a few minutes, Shayne lowered me to the ground, slightly wincing.

I shivered with trauma and confusion, frantically looking around the silent and darkening woods. It was a wonder Shayne was able to navigate herself through it.

"Are you okay, baby?" She placed her palms on either side of my face and lifted it to hers.

She didn't wait for a response as she ran her hands along the lines of my body, a look of concern filling her features. My brain could barely register the instant response to her touch under all the trauma. "Are we going to die?"

She paused her examination, her hands stopping at my hips. "I'm not gonna let that happen. But I need—" She winced again, this time I caught the slash of pain on her expression.

My heart catapulted into fear; fear for her. I had been too worried about myself to notice that the front of my dress was drenched. I couldn't see what it was, but the strong coppery scent told me what it was. I didn't feel any pain on my body, so it must have come from...

"Shayne, you're hurt!" I was shocked at the sting of tears behind my eyes. I barely knew this person, but my heart ached in so much worry for them.

"It's nothing."

"Yes it is." I returned the favor of examining her, and found the source of her suffering right below her ribs. She shouted in pain and backed away from me. "Are you insane? You carried me all this way when you knew you were hurt?"

She ignored my words. "I must have dropped my phone somewhere. So I need you to get to the other side of the woods and get help. When you do, I want you to call this number... " She said the digits of the number, repeating them several times, but I was too distracted to memorize them. "I need you to focus, Olivia."

"But what about you?" I roughly wiped away the tears streaming down my face.

"I'll try to buy you some time." She withdrew her gun from under her shirt, disassembling it to check for bullets. "Now get outta here. Keep running. Okay, baby?"

I shook my head vigorously. "I'm not leaving you—" She stunned me when she grabbed the back of my head and pulled my mouth to hers. I stiffened at the feel of her soft and plump lips pressing into mine, but by the time I was able to relax into the kiss, she pulled away.

"Go, now."

I could hear shouts quickly approaching us. I could also hear myself crying. "Please... "

"Get the fuck outta here!" she roared at me. The look on her face told me it wasn't up for debate.

With a blurry vision, I turned away and began to run.
