Savvy's POV ... My Identity

Savvy’s P.O.V

After a day or two, the doctor decided that it might be for the better if I go home and get back in my daily routine in hopes that it would jog my memory. I tried--no, begged--the doctor to let me stay, because I really didn’t want to go off with these strange people. I actually felt safer with the doctor than I did with these people. Yet, he insisted that this would help my memory return.

I felt so awkward on the car ride home with me in the back seat, the one who claimed to be my mother was driving and my grandmother (at least that’s who she told me she was) in the passenger seat.

My mom swerved around a corner, and then she blew her dark brown hair out of her eyes.

“Sandra, will you please slow down? You’re going way over the speed limit.” My so-called grandmother said with her green eyes filled with fright, as she looked at her daughter. My grandmother’s short silver hair bobbed with the car’s movements. I sat in the back, silently, not feeling completely safe with these people, for I had no idea who they were.

“Mother, I know how to drive.” Stated my mom. I started to get a headache as they began to argue back and forth. Their voices were raised so loud I was about to bang my head on the car window.

“So let me get this straight, you live – we -- all live under the same roof?” I asked, as I interrupted them in the climax of their argument. They both went silent … too silent.

“Ummm … yeah.” My mom said. “I … I … I lost my job a few years ago and … and ever since then we have been living at your grandmother’s house.” Something about her tone made me doubt her words.

“Sandra.” My grandmother said in a stern voice.

“What? I am telling my daughter about her life!” Argued my mom. I sunk back in my seat, hoping that we would reach the house soon … because I had a very bad headache and they seemed to want to rip each other’s necks out.

?>?>?>?>?>?>?>?>?>?

I had torn up my room, reading, and looking at everything. I’d hoped to get back my memory by looking through everything. But nothing had worked. I was about to scream at how frustrating it was not to know who I was.

Plus, it doesn’t help that for the past couple of days my mom and grandmother have been at each other’s throats. They seem to always be fighting about everything. Today was no different. I heard them in the kitchen talking about how the dishes weren’t placed in the dishwasher the right way. However, they stopped arguing when the doorbell rang.

Minutes later there was a knock on my door.

“Savvy?” I looked at my doorway and saw … What is her name? … Mary … No … Marcie … Madelyn …? I couldn’t remember. I noted that her brown hair was let down, and the smile she had didn’t reach her dark green eyes all the way.

“Ummm, yeah?” I said, acting as if I knew her.

“We … meaning, Hope, Kay, and I were wondering if you would like to have a sleepover with us. We thought it might help with your memory. You can ask us questions about yourself and we can answer them. We know you must have a million questions.” Said … the girl. I sighed in relief at how awesome that sounded.

“That really sound like a good idea … I can be ready in a few.” I stated and then stood up. I looked around the room.

“Need help?” The girl asked me as she clearly saw I had no idea where all my stuff was located.

“Please, I’ve torn this room up trying to get a sense of who I am, but I still don’t know where everything is in here.” I said. The girl laughed.

“Well, Maddy is here to help.” I wanted to slap myself for not knowing her name was Maddy. “I seem to know where you put everything. Last month you lost your hairbrush and you called me. I told you to look under your bed, and you found it. Then three minutes later you called me asking where your toothbrush was, I told you to look in your closet and there it was …” Maddy chuckled. “I have no idea why but you put things in the weirdest of spots, and I am usually the one to know where.” Maddy stated. I smiled … If only I could remember...

Maddy had found a small duffel bag and started putting things in it. After fifteen minutes, I was packed and ready to go.

Two girls soon entered my room once we were done.

I remembered them from the hospital. They visited me once, the day before I left.

I believe from what Maddy just said minutes ago, one was Hope and the other Kay. But I was not sure who was Hope and who was Kay. I just smiled at them.

“Alright!” Maddy said, with a huge smile. “Who be ready for a sleepover?” The other two giggled at her.

“You sound like Savvy.” Said the one named...Hope, was it? She had reddish brown hair with light green eyes, and simple glasses perched on her nose.

Maddy raised an eyebrow. “You bet your monkey’s mother I do!”

“Now you have really turned into Savvy.” One said. I became confused as to why they though Maddy was acting like me. I would never use improper English or talk about dirty, filthy monkeys.

?>?>?>?>?>?>?>?>?>?

Maddy thought it would be a good idea to go to a hotel for the sleepover.

She said that at her house it would be jam packed with her family and she didn’t want me to be overwhelmed. Kay, I believe her name was Kay … said that her dad and mom were arguing. Hope said that her dad is kicking out his now ex girlfriend.

Basically, they knew I didn’t want to be stuck at a place with loud voices and fighting, I was already getting that at home.

Maddy, Kay, Hope and I all sat down on the hotel’s bed, Maddy reached over the side of the bed and pulled a big brown bag.

“Savvy, I know you don’t remember, but it’s tradition for us to have a sleepover every month, and at these sleepovers we buy lots of food.” Maddy stated and then started unloading a whole bunch of food from the bag. I watched as she took out, Wavy Ranch Potato Chips, cheese dip (white and yellow), Wavy Original Potato Chips, Chocolate Hershey Kisses, Salsa, and a small box of shiny tin cans that read, Red Bull.

“You didn’t.” Said the girl I believe is Kay, as she looked at the Red Bulls with her blue eyes. Her blonde hair was drawn up into a ponytail.

Maddy smirked. “I couldn’t stop myself, Savvy loves them. Figure if we can restore her memory, Red Bull should do the trick.” Maddy said looking at me with a smile, but it was full of sorrow. I knew right now she was sympathizing for me. That makes me feel as if she was only here out of pity.

“So, Savvy, would you like to start with the questions?” Hope … I think … asked as she sat down next to me on the bed. I sighed and thought about it for a second.

“I’m not sure what exactly to ask … How long have we known one another?” I questioned.

“Me and you have known each other since first grade.” Maddy answered.

“As for Hope and I, we met you and Maddy in eighth grade.” The girl I’m sure now is Kay, told me.

“Oh, y’all won’t happen to know why my grandmother and mom are not really close … would y’all?” I asked knowing that there was something up as to why they argue so much. Maddy and the other two girls gave each other nervous and sad glance.

“We only know a portion of why they don’t get along. All you told us was your mom left you at your grandmother’s when you were little.” Kay said in a low voice.

“Why would my mom leave me at my grandmothers? And why do y’all only know a portion of the story?” I quizzed.

“Well, your mom was … she was an alcoholic and did drugs. You said that your mom left you at your grandmother’s because your mom wanted to get clean. But your mom never came back.” I looked at her like she had gone crazy.

“That can’t be, my mom and I have been living at my grandmother’s for years.” I spoke. They all started to shake their heads.

“No, I have been to your house many times, and your mom was never there.” Hope muttered.

“Maybe, she was out.” I replied, as I tried to make an excuse for my mom.

“Savvy, we’re not lying to you … your mom left you.” Maddy said. I tried to fight the tears that dared to leak out of my eyes. But it was to no avail, my tears streamed down my face at the thought that my mom left me at my grandmother’s.

"Did she ever call?" I asked hoping against all hope that my mom didn't abandon me.

"If she did you never told us." Hope said as she pushed her thin, black rimmed glasses up closer to her eyes. I sighed and looked around the hotel room thinking of how my mom could do such a thing. But a ping of guilt went through me, it's not like she completely abandoned me, after all she did go to get better. Maybe she was never able to, until recently. "When did my mom get back?" I looked at everyone for answers but no one said a word. I waited and waited for someone to answer but instead of answering they passed nervous glances to one another. I began to feel like something was up."Why are y'all giving each other those looks? What's going on?" I pleaded for answers. Maddy turned to me.

"Before you lost your memory we somehow got so caught up in our own lives, that we ignored you." She admitted. "Hell, we just found out about your mom being back when she showed up at the hospital." I began to wonder what had happened. According to them, and after the long time that we were together, I’d expect us to be best friends.

So why were they ignoring me?

What had happened in their lives that they cast me aside?

Wait that sounded so selfish of me to say. I should have been talking to them more. It's not like I had things going on in my life that was stopping me from talking to them ... right?

Damn! If only I could remember what had happened!

"I’m sorry." I mumbled to them in a low voice. I was feeling guilty for not talking to them. I mean, if we were the best friends I thought we were, then I should have told them about my mom, at least, right?

"No Savvy, it's us who should be apologizing. We let our lives consume us and in return, we shut you out." Hope said as she gave me a look of remorse. It was clear now that we all put ourselves at fault.

I randomly started to laugh. It was like one of those uncontrollable laughs that crept up on you.

Everyone gave me a puzzled look. I gripped my sides as laughter took over me and rested my back on the headboard trying to stop, but I couldn't.

"Have you given her a red bull yet?" Asked Kay to Maddy. Maddy shook her head 'no' and turned to look at me with a worried look.

"Are you okay?" Hope asked me. I wanted to tell her I was fine but all that came out was giggles.

"I just ..." I couldn’t finish my sentence. But soon I made myself stop laughing by thinking of flying monkeys. I don't know why I thought of monkeys ... Especially flying monkeys, what's the big deal about them? "Sorry guys, it's just that y'all sitting here talking about how you have been so distracted in your life that you ignored me. Yet, I forgot all about y’all in the first place, so it’s like your feelings are in vain. It’s all in vain. The feelings of remorse and being upset. All of it is.” Everyone looked at me for a second before smiling and laughing just like I did. We ended up all laughing and giggling until our sides were hurting along with our stomachs. Once we all controlled ourselves, I wiped away a tear that had fallen from my eye.

I suddenly reached over and grabbed the Wavy Original Potato Chips along with some yellow cheese dip. I opened them up and began snacking and so did the others. After a few more moments if snacking and silence Kay looked at me.

"So, Savvy, anymore questions?" Kay asked me. I began to think.

"Only thing I’ve been wondering is what in the world was I so busy with that I’d let y'all ignore me. I mean I don't remember anything about myself but I know that I would not stand for being ignored nor would I stop talking to my friends."

"Like we said, we weren't really paying attention to you to know what you were up too. But now that I think of it I did see you a few times with … with …” She gave me a look that I had no idea what it meant … before composing her expression. “With … Allen." Maddy said to me. I raised an eyebrow at her.

"Umm, who is Allen?" I asked. They all glanced at me with a 'you-have-to-be-kidding-me' look. I shrugged my shoulders and they all started to laugh, only this time I was the one giving them worried looks as I didn’t know why they were laughing. "Wow! To forget Allen? ... You really did lose your memory!" shrieked Kay. I narrowed my eyes at her. "Sorry, it's just Allen is like your second half and you not remembering or knowing anything about him it's ... How can I put this? … Rare?" She said. I gave her a shy smile as I thought about how I can't remember anything yet they seem to know me in and out. I hated getting fed information through them. I wanted my memories and I wanted to be able to know who the hell this ‘other half’ of me was.

"So, is Allen my boyfriend?" I innocently asked. Their faces dropped and it seemed like color drained from them. They gave me a horrified look and complete silence.

"Boyfriend ... No." Maddy said in a quick manner. “Actually Allen has ... Well you see ... While you were in the hospital, Allen ... well Savvy." Maddy started to fumble on her words as she tried to spit out something. "Allen ... He was driving his motorcycle and he went to Falling Cliff, which is a cliff that overlooks the city. And for some stupid reason he rode his motorcycle up the cliff, but when he rode it down ... The hill was too steep and the bike collected too much momentum. He ... Well he somehow got thrown off his bike and rolled down the hill, killing himself."

I felt a certain numbness that I had not expected. What I expected to feel was the red hotness of a face as tears streamed down my cheeks as thoughts of Allen raced through my head. I simply realized that my second half was dead.

But I couldn't cry because, I had no idea who this Allen guy was.

How can you be sad and cry about someone's death when you don’t even know who they were and what they looked like?

Yes, it hurts to know someone has died, but right now with no memory of this Allen guy who was supposedly my second half, made me consider his death as nothing more than hearing that the principal’s sister just died ... Nothing more …
