Apple of My Eye

--------------------------------------------------

Grace had a ton of homework to get done during study hall Monday morning, but she was having a lot of trouble focusing. Every time she would try to get her mind off of Cal, her phone would vibrate and she'd stop any train of thought to reply.

The honor student didn't realize how much more intense her feelings would get when she actually exchanged feelings with the object of her affections. All she's wanted to do the past few days was see Cal, and even when they did meet each other, it was never enough. The preoccupation was a tad stressful to Grace who had only thought about her grades for the longest time.

Was it going to be okay like this from now on? How was Grace supposed to get any work done if she couldn't get her mind off the other girl? Not to mention that Grace's resting heart rate had seemed to increase. Especially when she thought about having a girlfri-

Wait a minute.

Was Cal her girlfriend?

Grace pressed her face in her hands to hide her beet-red complexion. The word alone was enough to send her into a pit of embarrassment. Grace hadn't thought she'd be dating anyone anytime soon, and especially not another girl.

"You feeling alright?"

The voice made Grace nearly jump out of her seat, and she looked over to see Dana sitting in the desk beside her, smirking.

"Dana!" Grace huffed. "Why do you always have to sneak up on me like that?"

"I always come up to you normally," Dana replied, "you've just been in your head too much lately. Like, I've been watching you have a mental freak-out for the past couple of minutes."

Grace groaned. She'd forgotten all about Dana the past week, but now she was going to have to deal with her old rival's antics again.

"What do you want, Dana?" Grace grumbled.

"I was just wondering what was going on," Dana stated. "You're not all gloomy like you were last week."

"Well, that's not of your business."

Dana ignored her and flashed a sly grin. "Did you make up with Cal?"

Grace blushed. "Why would you assume it has anything to do with Cal?"

Dana rolled her eyes. "Because it always does with you."

Grace grit her teeth, thoroughly embarrassed that she was being exposed like this. "It's got nothing to do with Cal and nothing to do with you either. So buzz off."

As she tried to return her attention to her homework, she could feel the pretty blonde staring at her. There was no way she was buying Grace's denial, and Grace felt like she was being analyzed and picked apart. She didn't care for it.

"Did you two start going out?" Dana asked suddenly.

Grace flushed once more. How was she jumping to these conclusions? Just how closely was Dana paying attention to her? Or was Grace really just making it obvious for everyone? Did everyone know that Grace and Cal were going ou-

Wait a minute.

Were they actually going out?

Grace racked her brain, trying to think of whether or not she officially had this conversation with Cal. They confessed their feelings, even k-kissed, but...

Was it something that needed to be said out loud? Was it just implied that they were going out now? Grace was so embarrassingly inexperienced when it came to things like this.

"What's this?" Dana asked, waking Grace out of her thoughts. "You look all panicky all of a sudden."

"I-I'm fine!"

"Do you not know if you're going out with Cal?" Dana asked.

Grace gave her an incredulous look. "How do you know – I mean, why would you guess that? Are you stalking me?"

Dana rolled her eyes once more. "Your face gives literally everything away."

Grace touched her cheek as if she could feel what Dana was talking about. Was she really that much of an open book when it came to these things? Perhaps because she wasn't used to romance or relationships or whatever?

"Well..." she began, the wheels in her head turning. "Hypothetically - and I mean hypothetically – if two people said they like each other, how important is it to verbally clarify whether they're dating or not?"

Dana smiled, resting her cheek in her hand. "So you – I mean, they, haven't actually said if their relationship was official or not?"

"Yeah."

Oh my God, this was so embarrassing. Why was she asking Dana of all people? Grace knew she was opening herself up to more teasing from her blonde rival. Still, Dana was definitely more experienced in this arena, and she gave off a sort of mature vibe that was different from Grace's.

"Well, I do think it's implied to a certain extent," Dana replied as if she was seriously thinking about how to answer. "Still, these days, it doesn't hurt to just ask to make sure that the other person's on the same page."

"I...guess that makes sense." Grace flushed at the thought of actually asking Cal if she wanted to go out. Would she even be able to do it? Dammit, why couldn't Cal take the initiative with this? She'd definitely be more smooth about it.

"It's so cute seeing you like this," Dana gushed. "I was worried you'd be forever alone since all you care about is school."

Grace glared at the blonde. "Why are you so gung-ho about this? I thought you were interested in Cal."

"Oh, no, I don't swing that way," Dana waved dismissively. "It was just really funny seeing you get so jealous."

"You-" Grace seethed, about to go off on the other girl, but she was interrupted by the bell.

A tall jock-looking guy approached the two of them, though he was only looking at Dana. He seemed to purposely avoid making eye contact with Grace. Well, that was pretty normal, being that much of the student population was afraid of her.

"Hey, babe, ready to go?" he asked.

Dana stood up and pranced over to grasp his arm. "Of course!"

Grace's mouth fell open at the sight. "And you had a boyfriend?"

Dana flashed her a cheeky smile that made Grace want to stand up and slap it off. "Yep! This whole time. You just never bothered to ask!"

And with that, the two of them left the classroom, gushing each other like a pair of sickening lovebirds.

Damn that girl.

--

Grace sighed as she walked down the hallway after school. She hadn't been able to meet with Cal all day since the blonde had to leave early for a doctor's appointment. Grace supposed they could've had lunch together, but doing that so suddenly would make everyone around immediately suspicious.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW

Grace wasn't ashamed of her relationship with Cal, but she still found herself unable to tell anyone about it yet. Pretty much the only one who knew (or, suspected) was Dana. Even though she'd opened up to Jeanette and Megan, she still wasn't prepared to drop the news on them. Especially not when Grace herself wasn't clear on the status of the relationship.

Surely Cal wasn't opposed to being official, right? Grace couldn't imagine a scenario where the tall girl would turn such a proposition down. So why was she so nervous about bringing it up?

Perhaps it was the prospect of actually being in a relationship. The only person Grace dated was a boy in 8th grade, if that could even count. She didn't really like the boy, but she was curious at the time. Needless to say, it ended rather quickly.

Grace also hadn't really ever considered the prospect of dating someone of the same sex. She'd never thought about her sexuality in depth – there were always other things on her mind. Sure, Grace was definitely attracted to Cal, but now that she was thinking about it, it was kind of scary, right? She didn't know what to do in a relationship, much less in one with another girl.

Grace's brain was hurting with all these thoughts swarming around in her head. Cal was the more experienced one, so perhaps it was just best to let her take the initiative.

"Grace!"

The mention of her name caused Grace to jump and turn around. Leaning outside of the classroom was her homeroom teacher, Mr. Richardson, beckoning her over. Internally groaning at the thought of having to spend her after school time helping a teacher, she sauntered over.

"Yes, sir?" Grace asked, putting her fake smile on.

The tall, mustachioed man put his hands on his hips, looking a bit stressed out. "Hi, Grace, I just wanted to fill you in on something that's going on."

Grace raised her eyebrow, her smile falling. "Something going on?"

"You know Sarah, that one gave you a hard time a while back?"

Grace tensed at the name. After everything that'd happened the past few days, she'd admittedly forgotten about her obsessed classmate. Come to think of it, she hadn't even seen Sarah at all today, so she'd been out of sight, out of mind.

"Yeah," Grace responded.

"Well, she's been going around making accusations again," Mr. Richardson sighed. "There's no proof of anything and some students even reported seeing her throw some stuff in the pond out back. The administration's been thinking of really cracking down on her this time."

So that's what Cal was talking about, Grace thought, recalling her argument with the transfer student. She was a bit irked that Cal even considered Grace capable of doing such a distasteful thing.

Still, the administration cracking down sounded like a new development. Perhaps Sarah would finally get out of her hair? Well, hopefully she didn't mention anything about the slap...that was the only thing Grace actually did to the smaller girl. She cringed just thinking about it.

"Anyway," Mr. Richardson continued, "they asked me to reach out to you and see if you wanted to meet with the higher-ups and give a statement about her."

Grace waved her hand dismissively. "Oh, no, I'm good. I just want this whole issue to be over, honestly."

Mr. Richardson nodded understandingly. "I get that. I'll let them know...I'm sorry you keep having to deal with this."

"It's alright," Grace replied, "thanks for letting me know."

And with that, Mr. Richardson retreated back into his classroom and Grace continued to the back door to the parking lot where Jeanette was waiting.

What a pain...

Grace didn't understand why she was attracting so many troublesome people. At least this was one less to deal with from now on. Hopefully.

She felt her phone vibrate in her bag, and she could only assume it was Jeanette asking where she was. After all, she'd been idling in the hall, lost in thought, and then stopped by a teacher, so Grace felt a little bad.

I'll buy her a coffee to make up for it, Grace thought, pulling her phone out and unlocking it.

But as she peered at her smartphone screen, the name of the messenger did not come up as Jeanette at all. It was a number Grace didn't recognize...but the contents of the message gave away exactly who it was. Breaking out in a cold sweat, the fears from several weeks ago came rushing back to Grace in full force.

Will.
