Silver Lining

--------------------------------------------

Cal only remembered feeling too giddy to fall asleep last night, so when she woke up late the next morning, she was rather surprised. Immediately, she wondered if yesterday was all a dream and she didn't actually confess to Grace and kiss her. The whole thing seemed so preposterous and sudden – Grace liking her? Keep dreaming!

Cal turned on her side in her bed and grabbed her phone from the nightstand. It was past 11 o'clock and she had no new messages. She opened up her texts to Grace, but she wasn't sure what to send her – she's couldn't just up and ask if she'd just dreamt up her encounter with the honor student. So she went with something that could be taken as a joke if need be.

Cal: Good morning ❤❤

Oh boy, she's gonna love that.

Not only a few minutes passed before Grace responded.

Grace: I'm blocking you

Cal giggled to herself, butterflies swirling around in her stomach.

Cal: What? That's how I say good morning to all my friends.

Grace: You have friends?

Cal: How rude

Several minutes passed as Cal watched her phone screen like an idiot, just waiting for a new message notification to pop up. After waiting for a while, she debated just getting out of bed, but her phone buzzed before she could actually do it.

Grace: ...am I your friend?

Cal was a bit taken aback by that response. Was she hesitating to send that? Regardless, Cal's heart started pounding as she typed in her reply. Now was the time to figure out if everything was just a dream.

Cal: I'm hoping you're a bit more than that

Embarrassed, Cal buried her face in her pillow, kicking her legs like an over-eager preteen. Was she this pathetic when she started dating her last girlfriend? Were her and Grace even considered to be dating yet? She certainly wanted to be.

Finally, Cal's phone vibrated again, so she grabbed it and raised her face out of her pillow.

Grace: Me too.

The reply shook Cal to the core, and before she could stop herself, she was pressing the call button and placing the phone to her ear as she lay on her side. After a few rings, a cautious voice crept from the speaker.

"Uh...hello?"

Just hearing the girl's voice was enough to send electricity down Cal's spine.

"Hey," she replied lamely.

"Why are you calling me?" Grace sounded like she was trying to mask her surprise and embarrassment with her usual chilly attitude.

"I just...wanted to hear your voice."

Oh, God, I'm such an idiot.

A few seconds of silence passed, so Cal scrambled to say something before it got irreparably awkward.

"Uh, so, would you wanna hang out today?" she asked.

Cal was worried she was coming on too strong after they just admitted their feelings to each other, but the blonde wanted nothing more than to meet again. Even more so than before, she ached to be in the other girl's presence, to just talk to her, to touch-

I need to calm down.

"I've got to go to my brother's baseball game and then we're going to dinner, I think."

The reply caught Cal off guard, and a pit of disappointment settled in her stomach.

"Ah, alright," she said, trying to mask her now dampened mood.

After a quick silence, Grace spoke again. "I'm sorry. I really do want to hang out with you."

The reassurance put a small smile on Cal's face. "That's alright. But you'll have to go out on a date with me one of these nights."

Cal could almost hear Grace blushing over the phone. "Geez, you're so embarrassing!"

"But you still like me," Cal teased, hoping it was actually true.

"...yes."

Cal's cheeks heated up and she couldn't stop a giant smile from spreading on her face. Now it was almost starting to feel painful that she wouldn't be able to see Grace today.

But before Cal could start feeling too happy, she was brought back to reality by a loud voice booming from downstairs.

"Cal! Are you just going to sleep all weekend?"

Cal sighed, her mood falling once again.

"I'm sorry, my mom's yelling at me, so I've gotta go," she told Grace.

"Oh, okay," Grace said. Cal thought she might've detected some disappointment in her voice. "I'll try to see about hanging out tomorrow."

Cal smiled. "That'd be awesome."

The two said their goodbyes and Cal hung up, her heart pounding again.

"Cal!" her mother yelled again.

"Alright, I'm up!" she yelled back, not bothering to mask the irritation in her voice.

Unfortunately, since she couldn't spend time with Grace, she'd have to deal with her mother all day. Cal was going to have to find someone – anyone, really – to hang out with so she could just leave the house...

--

"You seem pretty happy. You've usually got this sour look on your face."

"Must be your imagination, Mom."

Cal tried to ignore her mother as she stuffed cereal in her mouth and fiddled with her phone at the dining table. Unfortunately, her mother decided to actually eat breakfast with her for once, not that she'd bothered to cook anything.

"Are you doing well in school?" her mom asked while taking a bite of oatmeal.

Cal sighed. She'd done well enough to avoid her mom to not have this kind of small talk with her. "Yep."

Her mom gave her a rather stern look. "Why do you always have this attitude? I'm just trying to make sure you're doing alright."

"I'm not having an attitude," Cal responded, not interested in getting into an argument this early in the day. "I'm still just a little tired."

"Did those tutoring sessions help you catch up?"

Cal stiffened. She'd remember telling her mother about that – which naturally, she never would. "How do you know about those?"

"Well," her mother began, taking a sip of coffee from her mug, "I contacted your teacher, Mrs. Burns, around when you started school. I wanted to see if I could get you some resources since you entered school so late, but she said she'd already set you up with tutoring."

Of course she would poke her nose in and call Cal's teachers directly. In spite of basically losing hope in Cal following her footsteps, her mother was still obsessed with Cal's grades. She didn't do particularly well in her last school, but there were...extenuating circumstances.

"I wanted to get an actual teacher or professional tutor for you," Cal's mother continued, "but she said she'd already arranged for a peer tutor. Still, I was happy that it was apparently the top honor student in the school that helped you."

"Yeah...the tutoring was helpful, Mom, so don't worry." Cal was a bit disturbed at how much her mother knew...she'd prefer it if her mother didn't even know about Grace's existence, even as just some honor student that tutored her.

"You should really be making friends with girls like that," Cal's mom stated. "They're a better influence for your grades and...behavior."

Cal swallowed any reply to that. Her mom would be happy to know that Cal did make friends with Grace...but she wouldn't be so happy about the current extent of their relationship.

The two of them were silent for several minutes as they finished their respective breakfasts. Cal tried to hurry and finish her cereal so she wouldn't be stuck with her mom for much longer. Once she was done, she cleaned her bowl in the sink.

"I'm, uh, gonna take a walk to the convenience store," she said, trying to get out the door as fast as possible.

"Hold on, Cal."

Dammit.

"Yeah?" Cal turned to look at her mother who had a rather reserved expression on her face.

"Have you been contacting your father again?" the older woman asked.

Fuck, I really don't want to be having this conversation.

"No, of course not," Cal lied, just trying to get the old hag off her back. Why was she so obsessed with Cal's relationship with her dad? Was it a crime to get along with a person who shares half of your DNA?

"Cal," her mom said, her voice more commanding this time. "Don't lie to me."

Cal sighed in frustration. "Sometimes I text him or whatever. Why does it even matter? I think I'm old enough to decide if I want to talk to my own dad or not."

"You're not 'old enough' to decide anything so long as you live under this roof!" Her mother's eyes bore into her, the eyes of the merciless prosecutor that she'd been since Cal was born. "I don't want you having anything to do with that man! He'll do nothing but lie to you and bring you down to his level."

Cal gritted her teeth, anger bubbling up inside of her. Ironically enough, Cal's father had told her the least amount of lies out of all of her family. Neither Cal's mother nor her sister were interested in being genuine – they only said things to get what they wanted. They had absolutely no right to speak about her father when they were like that themselves.

"Look, I'm going out," Cal retorted, trying her best not to explode. "I won't talk to Dad, so just get off my damn case for once!"

She stepped out of the house, slamming the door behind her.

--

It was nighttime and Cal was absent-mindedly watching a movie in her room. She'd managed to stay out of the house for the whole day to avoid her mother – luckily, Kenzie wasn't with her boyfriend this weekend, so Cal could tag along with her and go shopping. She still hadn't told Kenzie about Grace yet...she didn't think she should tell anyone for a little while.

It was enough to keep her mind off of everything, but Cal couldn't find anything to do for the night. She'd managed to come home at a time when her mother wasn't anywhere to be seen, so she'd holed up in her room ever since.

Maybe I'll just go to bed early, Cal thought, looking at the time. Only 9:30 pm.

However, before she could really decide, her phone started buzzing. Cal looked at the screen and was astonished at the name that came up. Fumbling, she answered the call.

"H-hello?"

"Hey, Cal, are you home right now?"

Grace's voice on the other end sounded a bit rushed, but with a twinge of excitement.

"Uh, yeah," Cal answered, her pulse picking up. "Why?"

"You said you lived by XX Park, right?"

"...yeah?"

"Well, I'm going to be there in, like, 5 minutes."

"Huh? Why?" Cal nearly dropped her phone at the unexpected development. What was Grace doing there?

"Just go there! I'll see you then, bye!"

And with that, Grace hung up the phone, leaving Cal astonished. Before she could completely process the situation, Cal sprang up, throwing on a hoodie and some shoes as quickly as possible. She ran downstairs, happy that her mom wasn't down there, and left the house before she could be spotted or heard. She didn't even care if her mother found out she was suddenly leaving at night. She just needed to get to the park.

Cal found herself jogging down the sidewalk and through the back alleyways. Finally, the park in question came into view, and she instantly started looking around for Grace's car. However, she didn't even need to look for it, as the girl herself was sitting on a park bench.

Cal literally ran up to her, and when Grace spotted her she stood up.

"Hey! Sorry about this all of a sudden, I was just-"

Cal cut her off by pulling her into a massive hug, catching the smaller girl off guard. The honor student seemed even more beautiful than usual to Cal, and holding her in her arms felt like a drink of cold water after several days in a desert.

In spite of the abruptness of the action, Grace returned the hug after only a couple seconds.

"Geez, Cal!" Grace's voice sounded slightly out of breath. "You can't just run up and attack me like that."

"I'm just really happy that I can see you, today," Cal breathed, her skin tingling. She pulled Grace away by her shoulders, looking her in the eye. "Why'd you come here all of a sudden? I thought you were busy."

Grace smiled, nearly making Cal melt. "Well, I was driving home separately and was passing by, so I decided to make a quick stop."

"I'm surprised you even remembered the name of the park."

"Don't underestimate my memory," Grace said confidently, pointing to her temple. "But my dad's expecting me home, so I can only stay for a few minutes."

Cal smirked. "So you went out of your way to see me for just a few minutes?"

Grace blushed, brushing Cal's hands off her shoulders and folding her arms across her chest. "Oh shut up! I felt bad since you were so mopey after I couldn't hang out with you today."

"I was not mopey!" Cal argued, pretending to be offended. "Just admit it: you wanted to see me."

Grace looked down at her feet, her cheeks burning once again. "Yeah...I did."

Cal couldn't help but break into a huge smile. She unfolded Grace's arms from her chest, entwining their hands and leaning closer. "I did too."

Grace looked away, embarrassed. "We're acting like middle schoolers...it's not like we didn't just see each other yesterday."

"Yeah..." Cal laughed softly, unable to argue with that. "We really are."

Grace slowly looked up, and Cal leaned down to kiss her. The smaller girl's breath hitched a little from the contact, but she relaxed quickly and wrapped her arms around Cal's neck.

Grace tasted sweet, like mint, and Cal felt a bit giddy at the prospect of her deciding to chew gum before meeting up, as if she had expected this. The kiss felt better than anything had in a long time, and Cal's excitement was difficult to control. She almost didn't notice herself opening her mouth and licking Grace's lower lip, but the smaller girl tensed up and she worried she'd gone too far. However, Grace soon opened her mouth as well.

The second their tongues touched, a shock spiraled south down Cal's body, lighting her up. Cal knew, her hands gripping the back of Grace's jacket, that she needed to stop now before she got too ahead of herself.

Using all of her willpower, Cal pulled away, breathing heavy. She nearly melted at Grace's disheveled expression, flushed and out of breath.

As the moment settled and Cal calmed down, the tall girl couldn't help but start laughing. Grace looked up at her, confused.

"What are you laughing at?" she asked, certainly embarrassed.

"Well," Cal choked out between laughs, "who would've guessed, right? Imagine if we told each other when we first met that we'd eventually be making out at night in a park!"

Grace blushed, but she giggled a little too. She wrapped her arms around Cal again, resting her head under the blonde's chin. "If you told me that, I would've reported you for sexual harassment."

"I wouldn't have believed it either," Cal hummed, one of her hands fiddling with a strand of the brunette's hair. "I mean, you're way too pretty for me."

Grace's arms tightened around Cal, nearly crushing her. "Are you going to keep saying embarrassing shit like this from now on?!"

"Ack! I'm sorry!"

Grace loosened up and the two of them just held each other, not wanting to let go and leave just yet.

"My neck's going to break if I have to keep leaning down to kiss you," Cal teased.

"And my toes are going to break from having to stand on them."

Cal chuckled, and tightened her arms around the now rather melty ice queen.

"Well...I guess those are just the sacrifices we'll have to make."
