The Avoidance

_____________________________

Her full name. Serena had no clue why Connor knowing her name made her so mad. But it did.

She parked her car and got out, walking into her home before her neighbor got home from the meeting.

The morning sun still gilded the sky in a soft gold making her skin warm. She sighed and ran a hand through her hair trying to let the stressed balled up inside of her fizzle out.

She couldn't let this guy get to her, it was all to clear to her that it's what he wanted to do. Maybe she could just resume her life as before, all she had to do was ignore him?

That couldn't be hard...right?

Serena walked into her kitchen, greeted by her cat, Mayo, meowing at her.

She chuckled as he jumped up on the island and pushed into her arm. Serena par his head, "one moment and I'll get you lunch."

She reached into the pantry and scooped up some dry food when she heard the annoying loud engine of Connor's sports car.

It reeved and she rolled her eyes as she stared at the black chargers lights go out and the engine silence. Connor got out of the car and stretched.

Serena meant to peel her eyes away but when she saw his big muscular arms tighten and flex, she couldn't.

The bottom hem of his shirt rode up as he stretched his arms. Exposing the chiseled v line and little trail of hair disappearing into his pants. She inhaled deeply and stared intently at the very bottom of his cut out abs as warmth erupted throughout her.

Connor grabbed his elbow and pulled it behind his head slightly, showing off his large arms and making Serena's throat dry.

Mayo's annoyed meows behind her made her jump slightly, catching his eyes through the window. Connor shot her a satisfied smirk making her spin around and avoid his gaze.

She blushed, embarrassed and slightly repulsed at herself.

Mayo mewled at her angrily and she poured the cup of food in her dish, "I'm sorry I'm sorry!"

She knelt down and pet her cat sighing, "don't tell anyone your mom just eyed up the neighbor...And I'll give you wet food everyday."

Mayo was too busy stuffing his face to register his owners guilty pleas. Serena laughed at herself and peaked out the window, no sign of Connor outside, so she stood up and walked into her living room.

"I have to clean up my flowers at some point today, my poor petunias have been sitting in puke." She said to herself and glanced out her floor to ceiling windows that faced Connors house.

If she was going to truly ignore him she had to stop walking on egg shells in her own home, afraid to go outside or even get her mail.

Serena shook her head and hands out trying to expel the unwanted nerves and feelings from her. Her plants needed her, she needed to put on her big girl pants and stick it to her neighbor.

Mayo rubbed against her ankles and looked up at her with adoring eyes, backing up her fleeting confidence.

Serena tied up her long brown hair into a bun, strands of her chocolate locks falling out to frame her face.

She pulled on a pair of old jeans shorts she didn't mind getting a little dirty because they were too small on her. She pulled on a simple teal tank top and grabbed her gardening gloves.

She pushed Connor to the back of her brain while she slipped on her boots and walked outside with her gardening bucket in hand.

Serena grabbed the hose and pulled it over to the her elite looking flower beds. Except right now they weren't looking too elite.

She put a hand on her hip and winced at the sight of her petunias, "time to get to work."

She turned on the hose and gently began to rinse her flowers off, being careful not to use any aggressive jet streams.

Once the puke was mostly washed off she got on her hands and knees and started scooping out the bad dirt.

Contrary to popular belief, vomit wasn't a good fertilizer.

She turned her music up and swayed her hips gently as he leaned over into her flowers. Serena mouthed the words as life slowly began to breath it's way back into her petunias.

As she spread new soil around her flowers a shadow casted over her from behind. A shiver ran through her body because she knew it wasn't a cloud blocking the sun.

Serena turned around to see a smirking Connor standing behind her.

She ripped out her headphone and stood up quickly.

He smirked and looked her slowly up and down focusing on her dirty knees. Serena blushed and quickly swiped the loose dirt away.

He was holding a large duffle bag and dressed in workout clothes.

"What do you want." Serena sighed out with a raised eyebrow, his piercing dark eyes seemed to see through her.

"I was just enjoying the view..." His tantalizing smirk made her nervous as he chuckled slightly, sending one more burning glance down her body, "the flowers of course." He nodded towards them.

Serena blushed and crossed her arms over her chest, trying to push front a confident face, "I'm not amused. Don't you have something better to do then pester me."

"Jeez put the claws away I'm just making sure the flowers weren't ruined." He took a step forward closing more space between them. He glanced over her at the flower bed nodding in approval.

Serena inhaled the deep smell of mahogany and mint, making a thick heat fill the left over space between them and her knees weak.

"They're fine." She turned around so he wouldn't see her flustered face. She picked up the hose, "why don't you go run off to the gym and bother girls there."

"I'm going to a game. My hockey game actually, you can watch me on channel 2."

"Oh so you're a hockey player...that explains quite a lot." Serena made a point to show a great interest in her flowers.

"What's that supposed to mean?" He chuckled and took a step closer to her behind. Heat tickled the nape of her neck and traveled down.

She sucked in a breath, feeling his body so close behind hers.

"I'm sure you'd like to know but I don't care enough to explain."

"Aw shortcake-" Connor grabbed the loop in her jeans on the side of her hip and spun her around.

She gasped and her chest grazed his, she felt his hard muscles brush her breasts for moment. The feeling sent terrifying shivers down to her core.

"Don't give me the cold shoulder. You look much prettier with a smile on these lips than a frown." He pouted and leaned his face dangerously closer to hers. His hands reached up and went to cup her face but fell just before his skin made contact.

Her heart pounded furiously in her chest and her lips parted. Serena's grip of her bucket loosened before she dropped it making a crash that startled her.

"Ahem, well, you're blocking the sun from my plants. Leave." She cleared her throat and pushed him lightly away from her.

"Aw babe, sure you don't wanna come to my game?"

"I'd rather choke."

"Damn Serena, so snippy." He put his hand over his heart and winced.

She whipped around and gave him the finger from behind as he walked away.

The way that man infuriated and ignited her made her acutely aware he was nothing but trouble.

Later that night Serena sat in her cozy office. She was chipping away at more of her latest story, trying to tackle her writers block and get through this chapter.

She was trying to work out the main characters feelings towards the villain, they weren't friends, yet they were constantly drawn to each other. Serena was having trouble finding the right words, she spent hours staring at the flashing cursor.

Why was this so hard?

She groaned and slammed her book shut, giving up for the night.

Her mind kept wondering, wondering to the TV in the corner of her office and a certain sports game airing right now.

"No. No no no! That is a bad idea." She got up abruptly, waking Mayo up from a nap, and walked towards the door.

But before Serena even got to the door, she had the remote in her hand and was headed to the couch.
