Moving On

Jasmine's POV

Emma and I sat down on the patio while Zenia was inside with Jevan.

"Jasmine, I need you to be very honest with me. I'm not here to judge you or yell at you and belittle you. I'm here for the truth. Can someone else be the father of baby Jevan?"

I shook my head no.

"Could Bradley Pittsburg have drugged you and had sex with you without your permission and knowledge?"

"No, Emma!" I snapped at her but quickly regretted it. "It never got to a stage where anything like that could have happened. I know what I did at the gala was messed up, and I know why Evan had doubts in the beginning, but I never slept with Bradley, or anyone else for that matter. I was always conscious when I was with Bradley, and never once had he forced himself onto me. We never even kissed. It was just a friendly get together whenever we got together and nothing more."

I was reaching a point where I couldn't stand this anymore. Everyone turned against me, and the world just seemed to be stuck on me. Gossip had already reached the media, and my son's name was being dragged through the dirt.

He was only a baby! What's wrong with some people to be badmouthing the names of innocent babies?

"Bastard child."

"He got the hair but he's not the heir."

"Will he ever get to know his real daddy?"

"What's the new surname going to be?"

I needed to get away from all of this drama and hatred. I was not about to bring up my child in this godforsaken place.

"I'm thinking about moving away," I told her.

"What? Why?"

"I really can't do this anymore, Emma. I'm trying, but I can't. Everyone, and everything, just seems to be against me. I can't catch a break." My last few words eked out with tears.

"It's okay, baby. It's okay." She pulled me into a hug to let me cry on her shoulder.

She spent the rest of the afternoon with Jevan when Zenia went out for a date, and I took a quick nap. I was so drained.

Emma's POV

"Hey baby, please laugh for Grandma Emma."

I made a funny face and he gave a big smile. I took that opportunity to swab to his mouth using a clean cotton. I placed the sample into a Ziploc bag and placed it into my handbag.

I continued making silly faces for him since he was enjoying it so much.

Jasmine's POV

I woke up and heard laughter from Jevan. He was such a delight. Emma was making funny faces for him as he lie on his back in the crib. He was holding onto her fingers tightly.

"Hi, you're up," she said as she saw me looking at them.

"Yeah, I'm up."

"Okay. Well, you're going to have to take it from here. I'm heading back home."

"Thanks so much for everything, Emma. Jevan and I will miss you."

"It's okay, sweetie. And this is for the both of you." She handed me another yellow envelope, which I thought was the stupid DNA test.

"I can't take this Emma," I said quickly, when I saw it was some cold cash.

"Evan said you tore up the check. I'm certain you don't have enough money to get by. Just, please, take this."

I knew she would not give up if I didn't accept it.

"Thank you so much," I told her with a hug.

"Take care of yourself, sweetie, and take good care of him. He's so handsome and adorable."

I gave her a smile as I released her and watched her walked out the door.

After listening to the bickering of my own mother, calling me a liar and a careless human being, I began surfing the internet for affordable, but decent, apartments in L.A.

Emma had given me ten thousand dollars in cash, which should be enough to start over my life in a new place with my son.

I made a reservation and booked an apartment for rent. Jevan and I were leaving first thing the next morning.

As I watched the sun rise into the sky, chasing away the last darkness, I rolled out of the bed. I had a sleepless night, and Jevan's constant crying throughout didn't help me sleep at all.

"Zenia, please make sure everything gets sent to this address," I said to my sister once I had gotten Jevan and myself ready to go.

"I can't believe you're actually leaving, sis."

"I can't do this anymore. I need to move on with my life and start over with my child. Maybe this is my punishment, or my blessing. I don't know."

I took one last look around the penthouse and, leaving my final tears on the floor, I walked outside to the cab I had called.

"Take care of yourself," Zenia said to me and we hugged each other goodbye.

She planted a kiss on Jevan's tiny forehead before I got into the car.

I looked back as the car drove down the street. She stood there, waving goodbye.

Three Days Later

Evan's POV

"Don't do that, you're tickling me, Evan," she said with a giggle as my lips met her neck.

We were lying down on the couch, watching television while we snuggled up to each other.

"You taste like pudding," I teased her.

"You know, you haven't spoken about the wedding preparations since that girl and her little bastard left," she nagged and changed the subject-- and my mood.

I exhaled heavily.

"Evan, are we still getting married?"

"Of course, we are."

"Great. I can't wait. I had already picked out the perfect Vera Wang, the twenty layers of bride and groom cake, the wedding tokens and everything. The wedding planner called last night and said she already found the perfect location for the ceremony..."

She kept going on and on until I had a damn headache just listening to her.

"Honey!" She snapped when I attempted to close my eyes.

"What is it?"

"Are you even listening to me?"

"Yeah I was. I mean... I am."

The next morning, I woke up to my mother's face staring down at me with her arms folded across her chest.

"Good morning to you, too," she said sarcastically.

"Hi Mom, what are you doing here so early?"

"Because of this!" she semi shouted and slapped an envelope onto my naked chest.

"What's this?" I asked, but she began tapping her heel against the polished marble.

I tore open the envelope and read the documents inside.

"Were you aware that your father has an official medical team, even capable of delivering babies?"

"Of course, I know. You always said we weren't delivered in a hospital."

And by 'we', I was referring to Emily, EJ and myself.

"Right! Are you aware that grandparents can also issue DNA samples to determine biological results of a grandchild?"

"Yes, Mother. I took biology in high school."

"Very good."

"Is this going somewhere?" I asked without reading any further.

"In the case of two months old Jevan Hollen, YOU ARE THE DAMN FATHER!!"

"Wait! What? How is this possible?"

"I'll tell you how it's possible. The DNA test you first issued had been tampered with and changed. Someone clearly set you up to show Jevan isn't your son when he clearly is."

"Oh no! No, no, no!" I shouted as I held my head down and cried.

I had put my son out of my house. I had put Jasmine out of my house after she was telling me the truth. She would never forgive me for doing that.

I was such a fool.

"Mom, where's Jasmine?"

"Jasmine left Evan. She packed up and she left Brooklyn."

"WHERE IS SHE?"

"I don't know. She didn't tell me where she was going!"

My whole world blew up in my face.

I would have someone's fucking head for this spitefulness.
