I Like It, A Lot Actually

I couldn't move any part of my body, and for a wild moment, I thought I was dead.

Then an amazing and familiar lingering woodsy-lavender scent reached my nostrils, kick starting my body into movement.

My eyelids were the first to function. I winced against the bright light, taking several seconds before my eyes were able to adjust.

I was in an empty recovery room. At least that was what it looked and smelt like. It resembled the one I'd been in when I'd been hospitalized, except this one had a masculine hardwood theme. For some odd reason, it reminded me of...

"Shay—" I couldn't finish as a fit of coughs shook my entire body. My throat felt sore and numb, as though it hadn't been used in a while. And the slow pace of my brain wasn't helping me.

As soon as I tried to locate some function in my limbs, the door to the room swung open, revealing a familiar pink haired woman.

"Oh my God!" She stepped back out the door. "She's awake! Contact Shayne and get Laura right now." Her words were soon followed by what sounded like a stampede.

"What's going on?" I rasped, trying to get up, but my body couldn't seem to catch up with my brain.

The woman approached my bed with barely disguised joy filling her eyes. "Just relax, honey. My name's Freya and I'm a doctor. I've been taking care of you. You were in a coma, so its going to take some time to get back on your feet." She peeled off the stickers that attached a couple of cables to my both my temples.

"A coma?" Another coughing fit assaulted me causing the woman to rush to my side and slowly lift my back off the bed. As soon as I was able to sit by myself, I was falling right back on the bed. She quickly caught me and let me lie down again.

"Don't worry about it, you'll be back to new in no time. Do you recall anything from before?"

I shook my head against the pillow, urging the tears at the back of my eyes to stay right where they were.

"That's okay too. It'll all come right back," she assured me patiently.

"May I please have some water?"

"Of course. Hold on a second." She left the room.

I took the opportunity to think hard about what was happening. A coma? What could have possibly caused it?

Unfortunately, the only word that was coming to me was 'Shayne'. I didn't know who that was, but my heart seemed to beat faster at the name. It certainly didn't feel anything as dramatic as amnesia, but my snail-paced brain made it feel like it.

Freya came back with yet another familiar woman, her white pixie haircut looked stunning on her.

"Hi, Olivia. I'm Laura, how do you feel?"

"I feel fine. It'd be great if I could use my body again though."

She smiled kindly. "All in due time, I promise."

Freya brought forward a glass of water with a straw in it. I drank greedily, causing both women to chuckle fondly.

"Slow down, cowgirl. There's plenty where that came from," Laura said. She went to a couple of monitoring machines I hadn't noticed before, and started to unplug and turn off.

"How long have I been in here?" I asked after drinking my fill.

"Three weeks." She gently pulled out the cannula that was piercing past the skin on the inside of my elbow. I didn't feel a thing. "Sounds like a lot, but we actually expected at least a couple more months." What I humiliatingly discovered to be a catheter was pulled out of my lower proximities.

God, I hated this.

I cleared my throat. "What happened?"

Freya was the one to speak. "Why don't we get you cleaned up and fed first?"

An hour later of some more humiliation. I was bathed and fed. To say I'd wolfed down the all so delicious chicken soup would have been an understatement. Laura and Freya could barely hold in their laughter. For a pair of doctors, they seemed too—how would you say it? —street fighter slash tattoo artist-ish. But I instantly liked them anyway.

I tried to hold in my impatience when they left me to watch TV all by myself. It felt as though they were avoiding anymore questions I may have had.

Sick of watching lions and beetles attack their prey, I focused on getting my limbs to work instead. At least my hands had already slowly started responding, it was my legs I had to work on.

A squeal of excitement rushed out of me when my legging-clad legs responded to my brain's command to move towards the edge of the bed. With a face splitting grin, I pushed myself off the bed and sat at the edge. Very carefully, I let my feet touch the floor. And just as I pushed up and wobbled on ridiculously jelly feet, I heard the door open.

Upon nearly smacking the floor with my face, strong hands caught my waist and I crushed into a firm and marvelously smelling body.

Flashes of that delicious scent and sensually lean body filled my head. I looked up into the most beautiful eyes I'd ever seen in my life. And oddly enough, I'd seen them before.

A surprising wave of fear was suddenly coursing through me. Who was this person? And why was I so afraid of them?

I pushed off their chest, and instantly realized it was a woman, unless the small mounds on her chest indicated otherwise.

"Would you please let me go?"

A flash of confusion crossed her gorgeous features. This person could very well be from another planet, cause such beauty felt unreal. Her mixture of feminine and masculine features were much too unsettling.

"Of course," she said. Even her low husky voice was inducing ripples of goosebumps all over my skin.

Quite effortlessly, she lifted me and placed me on the bed. My heart lurched forward when I caught her eyes travel leisurely down the length of my body. Despite the arousal her hazel gaze caused, I indiscreetly covered myself with a quilt.

Clearing her throat, she took a step backwards, obviously noticing my discomfort. "How are you feeling?"

"Fine. Are you Shayne?"

Surprise flared in her eyes. "Yes. And I'm... "

"That's all I remember," I interrupted her, afraid she'd say something that I wasn't ready to hear.

She failed to disguise her disappointment. "Right. Laura told me you can't remember much. I'm here, so you can ask me anything. May I?" She gestured to the furthest edge of the bed and I reluctantly nodded.

I fought the desperate urge to pull my feet away from her, but I didn't want to be rude. "Where am I?"

"You're in an isolated estate. You'll be safe here."

Dread filled me. "Safe from what?"

"As long as you're safe, you won't need to worry. Anything else?"

I wanted to argue but I let it go for the time being. "How do I know you?"

She looked torn, and I didn't understand the responsive pain that slashed through me. "We, uh, we're friends."

"Friends?" Not with the way she's looking at me.

"Well, not really... "

"We were dating?"

"Not really." She was scratching the back of her head, a nervous chuckle escaping her mouth. My heart somersaulted at the sight of her toothy grin. How was it possible that this incredibly good-looking creature knew me at all?

"We were getting there?"

"Yes." She seemed to rethink her words. "I mean I hope we were."

I gave her a tight lipped smile, still awfully aware of her dominating presence. "Could there be anyone missing me? "

"Your safety is most important at this point."

For some reason unbeknownst to me, I trusted her words. My inexplicable fear for her, however, hadn't disappeared.

"Understood." The question came out before I could stop it. "Have we had sex?" I clasped a hand against my mouth as my cheeks burned with mortification. How could I have let that slip?

Shayne chuckled. "No we haven't. But we aren't exactly saints when we're around each other." I bit my lip. She mustn't have realized her gaze was glued to my mouth as she spoke. "I couldn't keep my hands off you. Its torture not being able to touch you right now."

My breath caught as her hazel eyes met mine, both of us understanding her words. She wanted me.

But I didn't know her. So instead of wondering why my body was responding to her needs, I changed the subject. "What happened to me?"

She clenched her jaw as she visibly willed her desire away. "You were in a fire."

"But that doesn't exactly entail much danger to my safety if I survived the fire."

"It was meant for you." Then she explained to me. Starting from the packaged heart to the time my body had gone into a naturally induced coma.

"What happened to the man? Byron, you said?"

"He's fine. His burns were pretty bad but he didn't suffer any brain injury like the one you had. That beam must have hit you pretty bad. Other than that, your burns healed quickly, but they had to cut off most of your hair."

"I had longer hair than this?" I pointed to the neck length waves on my head. When I'd been taken to the bathroom and gotten a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror, I recognized myself but I hadn't realized the sexy haircut was a new look.

"You did. Still, I think you look good in that hair. I like it, a lot actually."

I blushed profusely. It was hard not to when being looked at like that, and by someone as sexy as that.

She looked at her watch and got off the bed. "I'm supposed to be heading somewhere, but if there's anything you need... "

"No, thank you." I gave her a smile, a genuine one this time.

"Okay, I'll come back later to check on you and to answer any more questions you might have. Only me, Laura and Freya are allowed in this room. You understand?"

For a moment, the fierce protectiveness I read in her eyes stunned me, but I quickly recovered. "I do."

She nodded and started for the door. Then another question that had been assaulting my nerves popped up. "Hey, Shayne?"

She span around. "Yeah?"

"Is there any reason that would cause me to be afraid of you?"

A hint of anger and worry crossed her features. "I would never hurt you." What about other people?

I didn't voice the question, but I had a feeling she saw it in my expression. I simply nodded my head.

That evening as Freya gave me a full body therapy massage, my mind constantly traveled to that tall and intimidating creature called Shayne.

I knew somewhere in my heart that my fear for her wasn't from without. That she was a monster that I was yet to uncover.

But how could I fear her so deeply and yet be so needy of her touch.
