Newfound Confidence

Shayne's POV

The cab felt extremely small and uncomfortable.

Not that I wasn't fond of cabs, they were very useful.

I just might have forgotten that the interior of a cab was tighter than the spacious interior of a Jeep and a Lincoln.

When I'd gotten in the cab after Olivia, she had already settled in the middle of the seat with her phone against her ear, and distracted by a call.

So I'd just swallowed hard and let her thigh brush against mine, while her intoxicating vanilla and lilies scent filled my nostrils.

"I'm sure Sawyer was just trying to be a good neighbor. It's not your decision to make, mother. Why don't you go on a date with him instead, huh?"

She cut the line and groaned lightly in exasperation, the sound shooting straight to my groin.

"Should I ask?" I said, hoping she didn't hear the strain in my voice.

She turned in her seat, those beautiful green orbs smouldering with a temper.

Lord give me strength.

"My mother is demanding that I should go on a date with my neighbor, just because he bought me flowers this morning."

I almost lost my sight with the hot flash of jealousy that sparked across my vision.

I never got jealous, much less if it involved something that wasn't mine to begin with.

Besides, wasn't the plan to forget about Olivia Ryans. And yet here I was, jaw clenched with inexplicable jealousy.

"He bought you flowers?" I tried my level best to sound calm and unaffected.

"Apparently he had them sent to my apartment a few minutes ago. I have no idea how he knows that I love white Dahlias. It's sort of creepy, but sweet. Maybe I should thank him in person at least."

I'll rip him apart.

"You probably should," I tightly said despite my thoughts.

For a second or two, we both stayed quiet and just stared at each other. I didn't get the chance to look down at her lips because she turned away and sat straight again.

But I was still staring at her.

God, she was beautiful.

"Uh, so uhm, your ex-girlfriend. When did you last see her?" She moved away from me with a deep blush blossoming her cheeks, as though she hadn't realized our proximity all this time.

"Two weeks ago, why?" I said, watching her nervously wring her pretty hands.

"Oh nothing, just...do you miss her?" she said quietly, turning to me again.

"It's only been two weeks, I'm sure I can manage."

"Right, of course." She sent me a nervous grin that was so stunning and sweet that I was forced to look away before I'd gotten tempted to devour her right in the cab.

A few moments passed, the heavy traffic not helping.

"You know, I no longer have tantrums."

My brows shot up when I heard her proud statement.

I turned to her with a smirk forming on my face.

"Really?" I said inquisitively, impressed with the newfound confidence today, despite her few wavering moments.

"Yeah, so you don't have to worry about me throwing my shoes at you. How is your brow by the way?"

I could have sworn I read mischief in her cheerful green eyes?

Dammit, that was so fucking hot.

"It's fine, Godzilla, thank you."

A soft and sexy laugh left her lush lips.

Jesus Christ.

I focused on planting myself on my side of the cab, and focused harder on not scaring her with the fierce hunger that would surely show on my face.

"I truly am sorry though. Did I leave a scar? I can't see it."

She started to move towards me.

If she touched me, I wouldn't be able to control myself.

"We're here." I took in a huge breath of relief when I heard the cab driver's scratchy voice.

The cab barely came to a stop when I opened the door and literally jumped out.

I thanked the heavens for the abundance of air and space around me, already starting to regret bringing Olivia along.

"You seem so excited. I suppose two weeks is longer than you thought."

I looked at her and admired how the light from the morning sun hit her flawless skin.

"Probably." It was either that or tell her that I had been very close to engulfing her.

Judging by the look on her unamused face, she seemed to believe me, because I was sure I read jealousy there.

Why the hell did I find that hot? Maybe I was losing my mind.

We both turned to the beautiful modern mansion in front of us.

"This is your ex's house?"

"No, it's her parents' house. She's too immature to have her own house. The twenty something year old brat can't survive anywhere other than under her father's wings."

Olivia looked away from the house and stared at me.

"What?" I said after noticing the look of disapproval on her face.

"That's not a very nice thing to say, you know?" She looked so darn cute with her hands propped up against her waist. Like a mother ridiculing her kids' bad behavior.

"You'll believe me when you meet her," I said, dropping my gaze to her mouth.

The level of temptation this girl possessed.

I held her hand in mine and led the way, earning a blush from her with three different types of red.

"Why does she have your car?" she asked timidly.

"She managed to reach the highest level of immaturity when she exchanged her Lamb for the Jeep, without my permission." I really liked the feel of her delicate hand in mine.

"That doesn't sound immature, it actually sounds cute."

"Cute was far from her intentions, trust me. Right now, what I'm doing, following her to get back what belongs to me, will only encourage her childish mind games. She'll think we're getting back together."

"Then why didn't you just use the Lincoln?"

"Theo—the guy you saw me with at the gym—has it."

"Oh."

When we reached the front door, I rang the doorbell a few times before the door swang open.

And there stood Kira, in all her caramel skinned glory. I'd almost forgotten how attractive she was.

Her big brown eyes came to life when they landed on me with relief and excitement.

Then she saw Olivia, a look of confusion crossing her face.

She also saw our joined hands. Realization soon replaced her confusion as she looked me.

When she looked at Olivia for the second time, the realization soon transformed into open and murderous contempt.

It wasn't a matter of time before she was lunging towards Olivia, her clawed fingers aiming for that flawless skin I'd just been admiring a minute ago.
