Adaeze rose to her feet and faced him. “Did you see what that hausa man did to my boss few days ago all because of that useless governorship election? He called him names!!!”. She cried out at Bayo.

“The Hausa man was his childhood friend!!!”.

“To hell with childhood rubbish!!!”.

“Will you shut up!!!”. Chief Adedeji fired at her. “Why will you try to kill someone because of me? Did I ask you to do that?”.

“I can’t watch anyone talk down on you!”. She walked away and left father and son behind.

Bayo gasped as he met his father’s eyes. “She tried to kill your friend’s son even without you asking her to do it?why is she that loyal to you?”.

“She was a nobody when I picked her up and gave her the privilege to work in the company”.

Bayo nodded thoughtfully. “So she feels indebted to you that you made her a great woman…but how come she has the mind to kill?”.

“It was the way she was brought up. I am still trying to train her on that so that she won’t have the mind to kill anyone anymore”.

Bayo sighed deeply. “The more I get to know Adaeze, the more she gets me confused”.

“You don’t have to get to know her. She is a nobody”.

“Fred Bakare is dead”. The prison warden told her on phone immediately she got to her office.

She grit her teeth. “What on earth killed him?”.

“A prison mate stabbed him in a fight and he didn’t survive it”. He disconnected the line.

She screamed and punched the wall of the office as her fingers spilled blood after the hit. “How could someone else kill him? I wanted to kill him myself after saying some nice words to him that he won’t forget in the afterlife! Who ruined my plans!!!who!!!”.

Someone pushed open the door and walked in.

It was Bayo.

He stared at her with disbelief in his eyes. “What on earth are you doing? Why are you always acting so strange?”. He grabbed her bleeding hand and gasped. “This is blood!why did you hurt yourself?”.

She tried to pull away but his grip was firm. “Can you let go?”.

“You need to treat yourself. You are bleeding!”.

“No one has ever cared if I bled, not even my relatives! What right do you as a stranger have? Is it your blood?”

He took out a piece of handkerchief from his trouser pocket and wiped her bloody finger. “You have never received love from anyone obviously. That is why you want to allow yourself to be used by my father”.

“He is not using me. He loves me as his daughter”.

“Do you even understand when anyone loves you when you have never even been properly shown love?”.

“I don’t need love to survive”.

“Right now, you are not surviving, Ada. You are living in the past and that is not a life!”

“…and how is that your business!!!”.

He tied her bloody fingers with his handkerchief. “Go to the clinic to check if there are any complications in the wound”. He walked out of her office.

She sobbed and sat on the floor as she stared at her bleeding hands that he had tied with the handkerchief.

No one had ever cared if she bled.

She always cared for her wound and siblings wound herself.

Her mother had lived solemnly even before she committed suicide.

She never communicated freely with her daughters because she was scared of their father.

Her phone rang again.

This time it was a strange number.

She stretched to reach for it on the desk.

It was an unfamiliar number.

She connected it. “Hello?”.

“You are a fool. I will definitely pay you back for what you did to my son”.

Her heart slipped. “Who is on the line?”
