“Daniel I think you are getting drunk!Emeka, please call his driver. He can’t drive tonight”.

Emeka rushed out of the crowded and noisy bar to dial Daniel’s driver.

Tears filled Daniel’s eyes as he stared at Bayo. “Our friendship is thirty years today and our dads had a hot quarrel for the first time in our lives yesterday”.

Bayo nodded thoughtfully. “They both want to be governor of Lagos state. It is normal for quarrels like that to arise”.

Daniel sighed deeply. “Your father didn’t seem to take it likely at all”.

Bayo chuckled. “Dad always act melodramatic because he has a very soft heart”.

“Are you sure you really know your father, Bayo?”.

“I might not know my father that much but one thing I know is for sure. My father is a good man”.

Emeka arrived. “His driver is already here”. Daniel’s driver followed Emeka from behind and they both helped the tipsy Daniel to his feet.

Bayo sipped his drink and watched after them as they led him out.

Few seconds after they left he noticed that Daniel’s ATM card had slipped off his breast pocket while they had led him out of the bar.

He picked the ATM card from the floor and rushed out so that he will be able to catch up with him before the driver drives out.

He rushed to where his friend had parked his car earlier and to his greatest surprise, Emeka and Daniel’s driver were lying unconsciously on the floor by Daniel’s car.

He could see Daniel in the car and he could feel the strong fact that someone was in the car with him.

He saw the masked man point a gun at Daniel when he got close to the car.

He kicked the gun off the hand of the masked man and tried to rescue his friend.

Daniel ran back into the bar while Bayo chased after the masked man and blocked his path.

He dialled the number of the police. “I need your attention at number 49 Adieu street”. He disconnected the line and held the hand of the masked man and took off the mask.

He gasped at the sight.

“Adaeze Nwankwo?”. He managed to say.

She winked. “Are you going to wait until the police come before you release me?”. She rolled her eyes and pulled off his gripse then she walked away.

“You mean you allowed Abayomi to see you? How could you be so incompetent?”. Chief Adedeji fired through the phone.

“I am sorry boss”.

“You didn’t only fail to do the work! You allowed my child to see you! No wonder your father rejected you! You are a failure!!!”. He disconnected the line.

She sat on the bare floor by the road side and panicked. It was the first time she was failing her boss.

How on earth could she have failed him!!!!

She remembered how they had met.

At third mainland bridge.

Seven years ago….

Flash back

After realising what Fred Bakare had done, I walked to Obalende bridge and stood on it .

It was 12:am.

Life didn’t feel like it had any meaning anymore.

My sisters had died because of me.

If I didn’t trust Fred enough to keep them in his company, they wouldn’t have died so early.

My heart was tearing apart and I began to recall all my pain on earth as I moved closer to the bridge.

Just as I lifted one of my legs, I felt someone’s arms grab my waist from behind and I found myself on the floor.

It was a man old enough to be my father.

He was wearing Agbada.

Obviously a Yoruba man.

I glared at him. “How dare you stop me from doing what I wanted to do!!!”.

The man kicked her on her left leg and glared at her. “You are such a fool! That bastard killed your sisters and you want to take your life? How will that solve anything???”.

“It will end all these pain!!!”. I fired back at him.

“Then how will you get your revenge? How will you prove to your father even in the after life that you can be a successful woman?”.

“No! Nothing good can come out of me! He always told me that!!!”.

“And you will allow words deny you of your potential???”.

“I don’t have potentials!”.

“If you didn’t, I would not have stopped you from jumping off that bridge. Work for me and become the successful woman that your father would never believe you would ever be”. He took her hand and lifted her to her feet.

THE PRESENT

Ada grit her teeth.

She never ever wanted to fail chief Adedeji, the first father figure that she ever had.

Her phone rang.

She connected it.

It was her boss calling again.

“Hello boss”.

“Come to Saint Cry eatery by 10 am tomorrow. I want to see you”. He disconnected the line.

She smiled to herself.

This time, she would do all she can to not be a failure again.

She got to the eatery by 9:am the following day and waited until he got there.

She bowed. “Good morning sir”.

“It would have been a better morning if I was hearing the news of the death of Daniel Sanni on national news”. He said with a complete disatisfied tone as he helped himself to the seat before her.

“I am sorry sir”. She said soberly.

“Are you scared of killing someone?”.

“No sir. I didn’t want to hurt your son”.

“That guy is always following that Aboki like footwears”

She nodded thoughtfully. “…but what will I do now that he saw me trying to kill his friend?”.

“Act unconcerned and continue working relentlessly for the company”.

She nodded thoughtfully.

They heard footsteps from behind and they both looked up.

It was Bayo.

He had tracked his father to the location.

Bayo gasped as he stared at them with disbelief in his eyes. “I thought as much…”. He whispered.
