Behind Church Doors - S01 E07

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 7

“As I lay my hands to pray for you, you must believe and receive your Breakthrough from the Lord,” Bishop Kingsley says and I purpose it in my heart to believe and have faith.

For the next hour, he prays for me, breaking the curse of regression. After that he applies the holy oil on his table to my forehead. He also gives me one full bottle of it and says, “Every night before you sleep, pour the anointing Oil on your hand and then gently apply it to the whole face, in the same way that you wash your face.”

“Okay.”

“You will do this for the next 21 days, I will stand with you in prayer. I will give you a time when we can be praying together. My wife will join in the prayers too.”

“Thank you so much.”

“Which church do you go to?” He asks and I tell him.

“I don’t want to push you but you need to start thinking about moving to a church that prays as much as this one.”

“I don’t think my husband would allow me to change churches.”

“Leave that matter in God’s hands. Let me see your credentials.”

I hand him my papers and he starts going through them.

“You were halfway through university when you stopped?”

“Yes, I got pregnant and had to get married. It’s been hard for my husband to take me back to school.”

“We have an opening here at the church and if you are interested you can take it.”

“Okay, I am willing to take any job.”

“The position is that of a church administrative assistant. Basically you will attend to different office and administrative duties of the church. You will also be in charge of the general running of the church office and addressing the church’s short and long term business dealings.”

“Okay,” I excitedly say.

“You will take it?”

“Yes I will.”

“I will print out a job description for you and get your contract ready. Can you start tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

“Great, you can sign the necessary documents tomorrow then.”

“Thank you so much.”

“You need to stop thanking me,” he smiles.

“I am very happy.”

“I will also try and see if I can get your husband a job. And if you work well and join this church, you might be considered for a scholarship next year so you can complete your studies.”

“Okay, I will put that into consideration.”

“I am having a meeting with the pastor’s in a few minutes time so we shall finalize everything tomorrow.”

“Alright,” I stand up.

“Here,” he hands me an envelope.

“What is this?”

“Just a little something to help you get started. Get yourself some new clothes and use the rest for your transport.”

“Wow! God bless you.”

“Amen.”

“I will see you tomorrow.”

“Sure.”

I excitedly walk out of the office and as I walk towards the gate, I rip the envelope open and count the money, ” K5,000. Wow, this man is really generous.”

I dial Sanna’s line after that and she picks up instantly.

“Guess what?”

“You won a lottery?”

I roll my eyes, “you are such a bore.”

She laughs, “And you know I hate guessing.”

“Well I went to see Bishop Kingsley and he gave me a job at the church as an administrative assistant.”

“That is good news babe.”

“I know right. I am excited.”

“And Zyair?”

“I will tell him tonight.”

“Great, I am happy for you.”

“He also said I might be considered for a scholarship next year if I become a member of the church.”

“If I were you I would instantly become a member.”

“You know it’s not so easy, I am a married woman and I can’t keep making decisions without consulting my husband.”

“Talk to him then and make him understand how your lives will turn around when you accept this offer.”

“I will.”

“Okay, I have to get back to work will talk to you later.”

“Sure babe. Thank you.”

“Love you.”

“Love you too.”

After leaving the church I head straight into town and treat myself to lunch before buying myself some new office clothes.

Sanna sent me a few pictures of some clothes I can get. Papa Kingsley is a modern kind of pastor and he loves it if the ladies in his church dress up.

It’s three hours later and after four o’clock when I make it back home. Putting everything I have bought in a suitcase, I change into something comfortable and prepare dinner for Zyair.

By the time he walks through the door, dinner is already served. He is an hour late today.

“Hey.”

“Hey,” I stand up and get his bag before leading him to the bedroom.

“You are late today.”

“Work was busy. We had so many people coming through.”

“Oh, that’s good.”

Zyair collapses onto the bed while I remove his shoes and socks.

“How was your day?”

“It was okay.”

“I am starving.”

“Dinner is ready.”

“I think I should freshen up first.”

“Okay.”

He undresses and heads to the bathroom. When he emerges a couple of minutes later, I have already laid his pajamas on the bed so he quickly gets dressed and we head out to eat.

Bishop K told me not to tell my husband about his sister, he said when the time is right the truth shall avail itself.

After dinner, I clear the table and clean the dishes then I join Zyair in the living room.

“Can we talk?”

“Yes, what’s up?”

I hesitate before I say, “I got a job.”

“You did? Where?”

I clear my throat and say, “At Sanna’s church as an administrative assistant.”

He frowns, “you went back there again?”

“I had to.”

“And you didn’t tell me about it. Wow. Just wow.”

“You would not have allowed me if I told you I was going there again.”

“I thought I made myself clear about this church issue.”

“That church is great. The pastor is welcoming and he just offered me a job, the best you can do is be grateful.”

“Oh. You have already made a decision I guess.”

“Yes, I got the job and I did it for us. I am tired of living like this, you know.”

“And that is supposed to make me happy right?”

“You know I am tired of your attitude?” I yell.

“Tell me about it,” he sarcastically says.

“Two years I have been married to you and we have been in the same place. That stupid pharmacy barely brings in enough money for us to survive. You promised to take me back to school and you still haven’t done that. What am I supposed to do? Keep waiting until I am old and living in poverty?”

“I am working towards that if only you can be patient.”

“I am done being patient. I am getting this job and I am going back to school next year.”

“Okay.”

“Okay? That’s all you will say?”

“You have already made a decision, there’s nothing I can do. All the best.”

And with that he stands up, heads for the door and exits the house.

“This is for us,” I whisper.
