Then taking a deep breath, Alice asked,

“What’s your relationship with my Caleb?” She asked.

Hearing this, Daniella’s heart sank immediately.

“Uhm…well…we…” Daniella stammered searching for the right word to describe their relationship.

“Are you two dating?” Alice added.

“No Alice. You know that’s not possible because I’m married” Daniella said.

“Exactly my point. You are married but why are you going close to my Caleb?” Alice asked.

“Alice, what gave you the impression that something is going on between me and Caleb?” Daniella asked.

“I went through his call log and found out that your number is at the top of his frequent dialled list. So Daniella, tell me the truth. What’s going on? What’s your relationship with my man?” Alice asked staring at Daniella who firmly clenched her steering with her heart pounding fast.

Then taking a deep breath, she said.

“I am sorry Alice” Daniella softly said with a sigh.

“Why are you sorry? Are you two dating?” Alice asked.

Then slightly shaking her head, Daniella responded.

“No, Alice we are just friends,” Daniella said.

“Friends? What married woman keeps a man as a friend? Do you really want me to believe what you just said?” Alice asked.

“Alice, believe me, nothing is going on between Caleb and me. He is only helping me patch things with my husband that’s all,” Daniella said.

Then taking a deep breath, Alice calmly said,

“Forgive my choice of words. It’s just that, I can’t bear seeing him around another woman other than me” Alice said.

Then gently squeezing Alice’s hand, Daniella said

“I understand you perfectly. And I’m sorry for giving you reasons to question my relationship with Caleb. You are right. As a married woman, I’m not supposed to keep a male friend. But I guess I got carried away with the fun and excitement that comes from being around Caleb that I forgot that there was someone who was getting hurt from my closeness with him. And for that reason, I promise to stay away from Caleb from now on” Daniella said rubbing the back of her palm.

“Thank you so much for your understanding. And please I will like it if you keep our meeting a secret from Caleb” Alice said.

“Sure,” Daniella said with a smile.

After work, Daniella called out Caleb who met her at the side of the road where they both discussed in her car.

After a long while of awkward silence, Caleb began,

“Daniella, about last night I…..” He was yet speaking when Daniella cut him off.

“….what happened last night was a mistake that shouldn’t repeat itself,” She said.

“What are you talking about? It wasn’t a mistake from my end because I meant everything I said and did to you last night. And I know you feel the same way towards me but you are just scared of crossing the line” Caleb said.

“Caleb, enough of all this nonsense. Can you just stop it already? I already hate the fact that I’ve developed a likeness for another man that is not my husband. And I hate it more that my closeness with you is causing another innocent woman pain” Daniella said.

“I don’t understand. What are you talking about?” Caleb asked.

“Your fiancee Alice. How do you think she will feel about all of this? Whatever is happening between us is really sickening and disgusting that I already want it to end” Daniella said.

“Daniella. Please don’t do this. I’m sure there is a better way to handle all these” Caleb said.

“No Caleb. This is the best way to handle it. You have a beautiful relationship going on for you and I wouldn’t want you to ruin it because of me. So you should go back to your fiancee while I go back to my husband and face my marriage. Staying close to you now, is like giving the devil the leverage to ruin my marriage the more. So we should stop seeing each other, stop being friends and stop all manner of communications” Daniella said.

“Daniella….” Caleb called out with pain in his eyes.

“My mind is already made up Caleb. Thank you for everything. Thank you for the happy moments and for those times you helped me get back on my feet. From now onward, I want you to keep your distance from me. And I won’t be relying on or coming to you for help. I will put my hope on God and try everything possible to restore my marriage to how it once was” Daniella said.

And that was how Daniel cut off all ties and ended her friendship with Caleb. As she didn’t want to be the reason behind another woman’s pain and sleepless nights.
