Adebayo pov

I am in the office, reading some mails when my phone beeped with the same message I received in the morning.

I hibernate the system with me when I dialled the number.

“Hello”

“Wow! You finally called”

“Please who am I speaking with?” I asked over the phone.

“Well, you don’t need my name but I have an important message that will keep your life safe”.

“What did you want?” I impatiently asked.

“Let’s meet tomorrow at blue seal restaurant by 7:00pm at night, I will give you all the messages, see yah there…bye” she said and ended the call.

I was confused and note down the time and place.

Folakemi pov

I spent thirty minutes from boluwatife house back to the hospital, I didn’t meet anyone at home.

I quickly picked up the drugs and left for the hospital.

I have spent thirty minutes before getting back to the hospital.

I met my mother in law at the entrance of the hospital looking fierce .

“Good evening ma” I greeted.

“What is good about your evening, why are you coming back at this time of the day?” She asked demanding for an answer.

“I was delayed by the hold up ma”.

“Hold up k!ll you there, what did I told you the first day you visit me with my son”.

I tried to remembered but couldn’t remember it.

“I told you that I hate lateness, if I gave you ten minutes to get back. It musnt exceed that limit, what is wrong with women of nowadays. Are you that dumb?”. She thundered

“I am so sorry ma” I pleaded while she collected the drugs and we both went inside.

On entering the hospital,

A nurse is in boluwatife ward administering i.v. While my mother in law went to sit beside her. I remain standing

“She is here with the drugs, how am I going to use it for him?” She asked her daughter while the nurse left.

She explained to her mother while she listen attentively.

“Alright, I have to leave now while Folakemi stay behind” she finally announced while I insisted.

“I am here since morning ma, I have to go home to relax against tomorrow’s work”.

“Are you that du*mb? Who is more important than your husband family. Would you choose your work over us? It’s like you don’t know what you signed for?. Am I the person that supposed to stay with her….as old as I am. Mai fweend stay behind, you won’t leave the hospital untill she leave”

“She is even ru*de(bolu interfere)

“Look at the way you are talking to my mother, can you talk to your mother in that manner? I don’t think you have any home training and I don’t think your mum taught you anything”

“With all due respect mummy Israel, I can accept whatever you say to me…but dragging my mother into the conversation is what I won’t tolerate. You may spit on me, curse me, abuse me and I won’t shake but you… putting my mother in this is what I don’t understand. I am trying to be respectful as my mum taught me, that is why I couldn’t utter any statement since, it’s not like I am dumb….my senses are with me and it is working perfectly. I have tried my best by staying with you in the hospital, accepting whatever your mum keeps throwing at me, please don’t make all this hard for me, after all, I am not the one that put you on the bed. Why must I stay behind?” I replied In anger.

“Are you that Stu*pid? Are you talking to your sister in law like that….what she said is all true, your mother didn’t taught you anything. She is just bearing the title “mother” like a figure head, if not that this world is now worst. During our own time, if my sister in law is talking, I dare not utter any statement or look into her eyes and you are here standing and opening your mouth like a ruptured tap. You lack home training ooo”.

“Ma,…that was then, this is our own century and it is different from yours. In our own century which is nowadays, we treat everyone with respect. Why would I be shaking or looking down ward because I am communicating with a human being like me, is she God?”.

“I can now see that you have grow wings….and I will destroy it, my son won’t marry you” my mother in law said

“You are not God, it is only God that has the power to put two people together or separate them and I know that my own God is good. I love Adebayo and he will marry me”.

“PA” was the sound I heard last as I held my chin in pain.

Did my mother in law just slapped me?.

“That is for being ru*de to us?” She replied

Just then Adebayo came in

“What’s going on here?” He asked while entering the ward.

“Nothing is really wrong, just trying to put some senses into my daughter in law head” my mother inaw replied

“Some senses….as how? Can anyone explain to me exactly what is wrong here?”.

“Wooo, leave that issue alone, you came to visit your sister right! That’s so good of you. We can both go together while Folakemi stay’s with bolu”

“Which Folakemi?” Adebayo asked.

“My daughter in law of course….or who is going to stay with her”.

“If you can’t stay with your daughter, my fiancee is not staying with her. She is here since morning, suspending her job, is she the one that put her on the bed, why must she stay. If no one can stay with her, they should discharge her wether she is getting better or not. For this night, Folakemi is going home with me” Adebayo insisted.

I remained speechless where I am, that is the second time that my mother in law will slapped me.

“As old as I am, I should stay with boluwatife. What is the work of your wife? Why is she hastening to go home? Adebayo, she must stay” my mother in law insisted.

Adebayo didn’t bother to reply her, he dragged my hand while we both walked out of the hospital. He pushed me into the other seat, slammed the door and enter the driver seat to drive.

I was silent throughout the journey back home.

He noticed my mood and decided to cheer me up.

“What’s wrong babe? Should I get you some yogurt? Ice cream? Popcorn?”.

“I am not a baby, I need a silent time to myself. I need to reflect on my life” I replied.

“Alright, you can have all the time to yourself. I won’t bother you” he said while he stopped in front of his building.

I Alighted from the car and went inside .

Adebayo pov

Folakemi is not in good mood, she kept a straight face after entering the house. She will break into tears and wipe her face off. I don’t like seeing her in that way and I know that my mother is the cause of all this….which kind of family did I find myself in. They don’t deserve me….yet, I am the only one that is feeding them all these while.

I move closer to her and place my hands on her shoulder.

She looked up and blinked her eyes twice.

“I am sooooo sorry Kemmy….I don’t know what to say about my family again, I am tired, frustrated and angry at them. They keep picking at you every time. You won’t have to go through their stress again, I promise” I move closer to her and placed her head on my chest.

She kept on sobbing till she slept off.
