It was during this incident I knew I was truly a fool when I was living with Desmond. I barely know anything about him, I couldn’t even tell where he was working as a laborer when Duke asked me.

“We can always ask around right? It may be in any oil mill all we have to do is go there and ask, Patience said.

“But wait o sister truly you don’t know where he was working? Duke kept insisting and I left to my room and locked the door behind. When I laid down on my bed, it was like a puzzle was before me and everything became clearer to me as I tried joining them all. When I looked into Precious eyes during her bridal shower, I saw great anger I can’t explain where it came from, then I Began to think about when we were in school.

Precious only comes to school when we had tests and exams, but after Desmond came into the picture, she became a very regular student in school. When I wanted dropping out from school when I saw my results, how did Desmond know I’ll be at home? Which on that day he came straight to the house and kept on knocking because he was sure someone was home even when we don’t usually meet at the time he came. I sat down immediately as Sandra friend voice echoed in my ears,

Really? Is that why he wanted a very simple and private wedding where he brought only 2 of his uncles to it without any form of invitation card whatsoever?

“Were we even married legally at the registry? Jesus Christ! I shouted and ran out immediately taking my car keys and drove off ignoring everyone calling Me back.

I went over to the registry but saw a different man there. I then understood he was replaced about a year ago which I carefully pleaded with him to check the files for me.

“You already filed for divorce right? When was that? He asked and I told him the year and date which he brought out a record and opened from the beginning to the last page of the book.

“Are you sure its here ma’am? The man asked and I just looked at him.

“We were also married here o, I replied.

“Who was in charge? Because I know I replaced Barrister Dickson here, the man said.

“Exactly, Bar. Dickson was his name and he knows about everything, I told him and the man looked at me for a while hitting his pen on the desk,

“When were you married again? He asked and I told him which he brought out another record for that year and month, still our names were not there.

“I’m sorry madam I don’t think any wedding was done here, please I’ll advice you go back and think carefully about this probably you mixed up the year or something, the man said and I stood up looking at him.

“I find that as an insult, What are you talking about? We signed at this registry what are you saying or am I a kid? Or do you play dirty games over here huh! I shouted hitting my hands on the table and the security came in.

“Please excuse us madam, the man calmly said.

“No! You have to check the record again you’re mistaken. It can be anywhere please am begging you I know what am saying! I said and quickly went on my knees and the man told the security to leave.

I was already shedding tears with my head bowed and the man helped me to sit down,

“Seriously Joan I don’t know what to say, I have opened up everything for you here to check yourself, I’ve been sincere here right? If you’re sure it was really done here, then there’s only one thing I can say, it was a fake wedding, the man said and I raised my head and looked at him.

“I’m sorry, he whispered and I burst out crying. That sorry was like a pepper sprayed on a wound and it went deep into my soul and he held me.

“He’ll pay for this, I’ll surely make him pay! I said and the man looked at me as I stood up taking my car keys, but he ran and shut the door blocking the way,

“Joan, I don’t you and its my first time seeing you. Whatever happened then I was not aware but don’t do anything rash no matter how hurt you are, if you want you Can file a case against Desmond. One wrong step you’ll be dragged into it, the man said.

“And what will the court do? If such a foul play was carried out even at the registry then anything can happen in the court, Desmond can find his way out, he’s a crook! I told him.

“Can I take you somewhere? Just give me a minute, he said and quickly arranged his table while I waited at the door and we left together using my car.

While driving I opened up everything to him as he listened carefully and told me where to divert to as I drove.

“So its true, he said.

“What’s true? I asked.

“About Barrister Dickson. We started hearing complains about him and when he was about to be replaced he fought so hard not to leave the registry. And to be honest Joan, you’re the 2nd person that has complained this though the first lady that came, she couldn’t really put things together you know….. Looks like she was equally deeply fooled but she couldn’t explain herself like you did and I couldn’t help her, but don’t worry I gat this one, the man replied and I sniffed.

“Thank you, I said.

“So he’s married now? He asked and I sadly nodded.

“With my best friend, I replied.

“Its okay, its here, the man said pointing at a gate and I horned………..

He took me to his friend who was a lawyer and he carefully explained everything to him by himself.

“What’s wrong with Dickson for crying out loud? How were we able to ignore such incompetence from him for such a long time without doing anything? The lawyer asked.

“This time he has gone too far and is a bad name to us, something must be giving him the guts to misbehave the way he wants, the man at the registry said.

“This is so bad, Joan what are you going to do now? The lawyer asked and i smirked.

‘I wanted going the other way, I wanted showing the devil that I know more than him, I replied.

“No Joan it won’t end well trust me, the vengeance spirit will only push you into more trouble even if you succeed to hurt him back, the man at the registry said.

“that’s right Joan, we’ll file a case against Desmond and we’ll summon Dickson to explain what happened, and I’m sure you have the photograph of the wedding right? The lawyer asked and my blood went dry. I can remember a photographer was hired to cover the traditional wedding and the signing at the registry but after a week he came back telling us cock and bull story how he lost the memory card… How the memory card got corrupted o….. and after all the grammar he was only able to print out 2 pictures from the traditional marriage where an enlargement was done with the family photo because of the presence of my late father as a remembrance.

“Wow he indeed planned out everything, so you mean there’s no prove that anything was done at the registry? The lawyer asked after I explained everything to them and I bowed my head. At that point I wanted tearing someone into pieces, how could they use me that much with my two eyes open, how could I be such stupid! I kept thinking shaking my legs as I began to hate myself.

“Joan Its okay, we’ll surely come up with something but promise us that you’ll let us do this for you, dont go your own way, the lawyer said and I nodded.

“Thank you, thank you and if you need a lawyer I’m just at your service, the lawyer said and I closed my eyes. Is God already fighting for me? I asked myself and cleaned my face.

“Thank you all so much, I really appreciate this, I told them.

“Nah its fine. So I’m Chike by name, the man at the registry said and I nodded.

“Nice to meet you sir, I said shaking hands with him.

“You can call me Barrister do good, the lawyer said and I laughed.

“Sounds like the koboko my primary school teacher will hold and call it doctor do good, I said and he laughed.

“Exactly, so I’m barrister do good, the lawyer said.

“He trashes people in court, you can also call him court parrot, Chike said and I just smiled.

“Nice to see that smile Joan, don’t worry yourself too much just get our contacts so you we can always call and tell you the latest development, Chike said.

“Sure, I said bringing out my phone and we exchanged contacts.

“Thank you so much, you two just made me feel relieved, I told them.

“That’s our job, we relief stress, Bar. do good said as he excorted us outside…………..

I got home and met everyone worried after ignoring their countless calls after I ran out. I ignored their different questions and had a chill water to drink and poured the left over in the glass on my head and felt it rolled through my body and I closed my eyes.

“Joan you’re making us scared o, what did you find? Patience asked and I opened my eyes and scoffed then I looked at the enlargement photo for a while saying nothing and I heaved,

“I was not married at the registry, I finally said.

“What registry is that? Is it the same registry I was there live? Duke asked and I nodded.

“How? I mean how? Patience asked and I smiled.

“Still strange, when I returned to my room I saw everything as a puzzle. This thing has always been there but I was too blind to notice, I replied and bite my lips.

“I know at that time I was down and emotionally stressed up with school and he made use of My weakness to get to me, but how was I able to let him deep inside my heart that I couldn’t see the real Desmond? How were we able to click and was so connected to each other that I felt he was so perfect and was the angel sent to me. I didn’t want to look at his age or the fact that he had no money, I was ready to give my all, and without thinking twice I gave my all with all my heart. Where did I go wrong? Was I made not to find happiness no matter how hard I try? For once I thought I was accepted, loved and respected by someone. For once I felt someone saw a little light and good in me when everyone thought I was truly useless, but it was all a camouflage, a camouflage to finish me completely with no trace that will be left of me, i continued and a tear dropped from my eyes as I couldn’t find my voice to speak anymore and Sandra stood up from where she sat and hugged me.

Duke paced round the sitting room so angry as Patience was still quiet trying to digest everything that was going on,

“Where can i find that bastard? No he must pay for this, he must surely pay for this and I will dig him out! Duke shouted.

“Dear calm down, Sandra told him.

“Calm down after all he has done? Are you aware my sister almost died in that accident? She was rolled into the hospital unconscious and taken to the theater at that state so they can safe the life of her baby. Even after the operation they noticed something was wrong and returned her back again after 2 days for another operation and in all this that bastard was just looking and will always leave to an unknown oil mill leaving her to our care. We took care of every money that was spent there without Desmond adding a dime, yet I was even looking for a way to justify his action and to calm my sister down when she asked for a divorce not knowing he is the real devil! Duke shouted and I was shivering ………..
