When I left his room I didn’t find that discussion funny so I called his first son and sat him down,

“Tell me the truth Duke, how is dad health? I asked him.

“What did dad tell you? He asked back.

“I don’t understand, but he’s taking his medication why is he not getting better? I asked back.

“Sis the truth of the matter is that dad does not want to get better, he thinks about mom all the time and she’s the only remedy. I don’t understand why dad should be so into someone that left him with 4 kids for another man, its annoying, he said and I heaved.

“So thats it? He cares about his wife more than us huh? I asked.

“Don’t be surprised he is going to keep a will for her and i will not let that happen if he tries that, he said and I shook my head.

“Its alright, tomorrow I’ll take him to the hospital so he will be checked, I told him.

“Alright then, good night, Duke said and left and I called up Desmond to know how he’s doing………..

We managed our dad health slowly until the day kept drawing near and I personally sewed him what he will wear on the day.

“So finally I’ll be seeing the day? He asked when I gave him his wear and a shoe to match.

“Of course, where did you plan to go before? I asked back and he laughed.

The savings Desmond had with him was able to pay my dowry and he was so excited about it. His uncle offered to take Care of the drinks and my siblings offered to cook that day, while I took over what am going to put on. Precious landed on the eve and the excitement was just out of this world,

“I carry my aso ebi o, I can’t carry last na, Precious said and I laughed.

“No fine pass me abeg, I told her.

“How e wan take happen? Shebi na me go do you makeup? She asked.

“My younger one is a pro in that, i told her already sorry, I replied.

“No problem, make I comot my cake first before I go hear sorry, Precious said and carefully dropped the bag she carried, and we discussed at length before resting for the night.

And finally it was the D-day, I was so very anxious despite everything was in order and my father house was beautifully decorated. The wedding began indoor, simple and very private just as Desmond wanted, then we went to the registry and before I knew it i was already married.

But before the wedding, I had to rent a 2 rooms apartment for Desmond so it will look as if I will be going into my husband house after the wedding. Of course Desmond didn’t have a place to stay, were we suppose to return back to the single apartment I was managing when the neighbors knows him already? I thought about what they will say and had to squeeze out money just to save our faces.

I packed into the almost empty house with him and looked around sadly and he saw it,

“Don’t worry love, together we’ll furnish it to our taste and even get our own house, he said and I shook my head.

“I’ve heard you, so we’re married now? Like it all over? I asked sitting on the rug there since there were no chairs in the sitting room.

“Yea, what do you think? Was it not lovely? He asked.

“I didn’t say so, just that a lot of people will be surprised and not happy I kept it away from them especially my customers, but its okay I’ll find an excuse for them, I replied.

“Why are we even discussing this here when we should be in the room? He asked.

“Eh you say? I asked pretending I didn’t hear that clearly.

“Wait let me show you, he said and carried me from where I sat while I laughed…….

2 weeks later, my dad passed on! Finally he left us so he can be in peace, and when Duke called me that morning breaking the news to me, I had to hurry down to the house and saw him straight in his bed. Duke was furious, he hated my dad for being a fool dying for a woman who abandoned him and her children,

“Duke stop it! I shouted on him.

“But that’s the truth! He refused to get better because of a woman, he let himself die! He shouted and I saw he was so pained.

I slowly took him out of the room and went back to the room of my father, though I spent 28 years of my life not close to him, but the short while he apologized and took me in as a family was something I will ever treasure.

“Rest in peace papa, I said covering his face with the bedspread and i saw the clothes he put on my wedding hanged almost close to him and I wondered what its doing there when its supposed to be in the wardrobe. I went out to meet My siblings and tried consoling the ones crying until people began to troop in when they heard of my dad death.

I came to find out my dad already informed his people not to keep him long in the morgue, and within a month he was buried with the cloth I sewed for him just as he wanted. After the burial we went for the will, and just as Duke predicted, he kept a part for his wife. Duke was so mad when he heard his mother name and swore she will not have it. I kept quiet where I sat, after all its his mother thing and she never liked me for anything, why should I involve myself?. The family house was still intact for everyone as we all had our different rooms and 3 million naira was given to me.

I thanked my father oo because I was not expecting such an amount from him to start with, I was very grateful with the amount and knew my business will take another turn because it was already terribly dwindling. Desmond doesn’t still have a job yet, and he keeps rejecting the ones that has called him. I’ve complained bitterly to him, advising him to take whatever he sees just to aid me pay the bills and to put the house in order, but he kept saying he can’t reduce himself for peanuts.

I got home after leaving with my siblings and met Desmond writing different kinds of application letters,

“You’ve disposed the ones you wrote yesterday night? For goodness sake your letters are scattered all over Nigeria and you’re patronizing the fullscap and pen industry, for how long will you continue? I asked him.

“Are you insulting me? He asked.

“Insulting you? Really? So if you don’t get a job that pays 500,000naira and above you won’t work? Are you kidding me? I asked.

“I know what I want okay and I know I will have it, so how did it go? He asked.

“I was given 3 million naira, I coldly replied and went in to change up, then he met me inside,.

“Are you getting tired of me? He asked.

“I’m getting tired of you not listening to me and you wanting to have everything done your own way, I replied.

“So you’ll be happy to see me work with a pay of 50,000 naira as a first class graduate? Will you be happy to see me work up myself that much giving out all of me for peanut? He asked.

“Have you forgotten this is Nigeria and many graduates are looking for that 50,000 naira you are always rejecting? I asked back.

“And do you realize in this same Nigeria people are earning salaries of 300,000 naira and above? How many heads do they have and why are you always fast to settle for less? He asked.

“Don’t forget they have the connections and you don’t, its not a crime to start small because I need help. I’ve calculated and thought about so many things on how to foot the bills until am tired, can’t you see? I asked.

“I know but am sorry instead of working for such little pay which won’t still foot our bills, then I’ll go for business. I know whats in my head for us and i have to reach out for it, dont make me feel as if i dont have a goal or something, he replied and I looked at him.

“Business? Have you ever done business before? I asked.

“Sounding like I will fail right? He asked.

“I never said so, but which money will you use for the business? I asked and he looked at me as if he doesn’t understand the question I asked,

“No tell me, because you’re aware that my business is almost crashing and the money my dad left for me is what I intend to use to get back on my feet, I continued and he smiled shaking his head.

“I get it no problem, so when I use it to invest into my business I won’t have the profit to help yours or even pay you back right? I understand I’ll go get a loan then, he said and left.

I sadly laid on the bed with so many thoughts running through My head and I remembered my dad words,

“Desmond is smart and he believes he can rise again.

I cleaned my face and took my business book to see I barely have 200,000 naira in my account and the shop is empty, if I give him the money now what will be left for me? I kept thinking.

After a while i went out to fix dinner and saw he has finished writing the application and spread them out in different files attached with his credentials and I heaved,

“Do you have places to submit that to? I asked him.

“Yes I’ll continue to disturb that particular company I’ve been eyeing for a while now, he replied and I slowly went to him and sat down,

“What business do you have in mind? I asked and he surprisedly looked at me………..

I handed over the money to Desmond for the business he wanted going for. According to him he wants to import things from outside to sell and he had the necessary contacts and how to get the goods to Nigeria. I was expectant he will make it as that was that a good business and he was partnering with someone else, and that was how I gave him all the 3 million naira without taking a kobo from it.

The money Left with me, I used it in stocking the shop to manage until things get better, and after 3 weeks of giving him the money, just when we were expecting the goods to arrive he received a call, screamed and ran out from the house without telling me what’s going on.

I kept calling his line when after 2 hours he left the house and was not yet home but he never picked up and I almost died with worry. He slowly returned late very down and I screamed at him for behaving that way with me when I am supposed to know what going on but he didn’t reply me. I kept wailing and he finally dropped,

“The ship is gone! It sank and everything is gone, I heard him say and i couldn’t find my voice anymore. 3 million naira is gone? I even had to give him extra 100,000 naira from the money from my shop just to clear some things and everything is gone?

I was already few months pregnant and I immediately felt a sharp pain. I screamed breathing hard as Desmond held me but the pain was unbearable and he had to rush me to the hospital. I didn’t know how to start the cry that was boiling in me, the baby we are expecting how will we begin when we absolutely have nothing. What is left with me is nothing but feeding just to carry us going when we’ve spent all and its in the drain. I didn’t listen to all Desmond was saying that night when he stayed with me in the hospital, it wasn’t time for inspirational talks because my whole thought was on how to recover all I’ve lost and how I was going to make that happen.

The next day my siblings visited me and paid the hospital bills and I was discharged, then they took me home.

“Sister can you calm down? If you want we can arrange some money for you to start your business again, Duke said.

“Who should be giving each other money? I asked him.

“Does it matter Now? Its not your fault this happened and I know you to be hardworking, don’t worry things will get better, he replied..

“Sister just calm down, you may have lost the money but you can still have it back, or do you also want to lose the life of your child? My sister asked and I closed my eyes and breathed in.

“I’ve heard you, don’t worry I’ll be fine, I’ve seen worst days than this and I was able to survive, I said.

“That’s the spirit. We’ll help you with 200,000 naira to start up something, just don’t worry about anything and take care of our little boy for us, Duke said.

“Point of correction its a girl jare, My sister said and I smiled knowing they have began their fight of the sex of my unborn baby…………….
